After all, a commercial website's PRIMARY function is to make enough money for the owner to sustain, then secondary whatever someone says it is for (ie, connecting people in kink). See, I think this is backwards. Further, I think its one of, if not the, biggest mistakes businesses make. Design a good company, fill it with good people dedicated to what they do and I think the money will come. But the other way, shakes head. That shit doesn't work so well. You're misunderstanding my point. If the website does not make enough money for the owner to sustain (whatever that amount is), it will go. Period. No matter how much good it does. Or, it will stagnate. And some people are simply incapable of working with "good people," but if they have enough money coming in, the good people will continue to populate themselves inside the company. For example, let's say John Baku no longer had the funds to keep FL up and running, and he'd tapped out investors, because they just didn't want to keep throwing money at him for no return, and the people on the site who really love it are still giving as much as they can, but John decides that it should be free... If he can't afford to run it anymore, it will go away. Period. Yes, good people, good business practices, etc. Those are ideal. However, they do not keep going when the viability of maintaining something is no longer there. Like the dot com bubble... This is why many amazing businesses fail in the first five years. Not that they are not good people, dedicated to what they do. quote:
Generally speaking, I think that with few exceptions in business, there's always competition and there is usually someone who can do it cheaper or at a higher profit. In the modern world, the thing that differentiates is service. Take care of the people that take care of you. Rule number one in business and life. Again, leads to profit. You see? To me, my business MUST create a certain amount of money for me to live. However, THE REASON it does is not just because I write books, but because I spend (literally) hours daily talking with humans, and answering questions, promoting and writing in ways that people enjoy. They reward me with profit. Money is simply the value put on my place in the world. The better I am at providing value, the more money I make. I've always known this. quote:
But what most companies do, and which is the worst possible move, is start cutting costs to keep profit margins high. Stop expanding, stop investing in new tech (like getting off of Ruby on Rails platform), stop paying those employees regular raises, watch them go elsewhere. All of which is penny wise and pound foolish. Ah. But that's not the same as the point I made. I don't say put excessive profits above quality. I said it's PRIMARY function is to make enough money for the owner to sustain. That can be very little sometimes. quote:
* I think right now tumblr and KiK are moving towards being the cutting edge...which tumblr corporate doesn't seemed thrilled with...lots of hard stuff, some great sites, widely dispatched, people communicating all over hell and hooking up. It's simultaneously much more personal and far more widely scattered. But there is a huge scene happening there lots of people, especially the older groups, know nothing about. I think it's fascinating how these things morph, and how the numbers can tell so very much...
