Lilmissbossy -> What is it about message boards? (7/19/2006 3:28:34 PM)

That people stop talking like human beings and enter this bizarrely surreal world of being self-righteous experts on every subject?

People typing in this 'desperate to impress, romantic, holier-than-thou' pseudo-language and ending their postings with some deep meaningful signature, or flaming other posters in some meaningful attempt to try and sound more intellectual.

I cringe at the way some people seem to think being a font on screen allows them to be rude/patronising/smartarsed without any comebacks.

You don't have to romantically impress people with your cleverness, your intellectual signatures or your drama-filled put-downs just because you're not face to face with that person.

Note:  I laughed at this point because I include myself in this, I'm as bad as anyone.  It seems to be a standard behaviour trait of message boards. [:D]

Oh, I'm even more clever, more intellectual and more dramatic with my put-downs in real life!  These boards are so inhibiting.[&:]

That is a bit harsh isn't it???

Guilty as charged

I cringe at the way some people seem to think being a font on screen allows them to be rude/patronising/smartarsed without any comebacks.

Here I thought I was immune.. you mean Im not? Bummer

Unfortunately I am just as bad in person, ask my 16 year old, he can list all my flaws[:o]

I think you might have just fallen into one of her chosen categories [;)]

By the way, the OP says how people become expert on every subject.  I think that's part of the whole thing - in real life, if someone is debating an issue that you have no knowledge of, you're stuck.  On here, you can Google anything and instantly get as much information you need before tearing into other people with your astounding knowledge and facts.

If it wasn't for Google, I'd still be thinking Islamic Fundamentalism was a foreign cookery course.

I might just have lol.
But there again i aint really bothered.

popeye1250 -> RE: What is it about message boards? (7/19/2006 6:51:14 PM)

Well, nothing like a nice lively discourse on here.
As for "flaming" some people do get a little angry if they feel they're losing an argument and get "personal." once in a while.
No big deal to me, I can give it out but I can take it too.
As for me what you see on the comp is the way I am in life.
You just have to realise that "different people have different opinions." Not "bad" or "good" just the way it is.
Consider yourself lucky; in some countries they shoot you for having a different opinion!

LaTigresse -> RE: What is it about message boards? (7/19/2006 7:22:06 PM)

omg is the Dixie Chicks bs still gasping along.............talk about beating a dead horse

EnglishDomNW -> RE: What is it about message boards? (7/19/2006 7:27:15 PM)

One good thing about online discussions is the fact I'm actually sitting here naked with my feet on the desk and "the boys" hanging down lifelessly.

Try doing that in a pub.

LaTigresse -> RE: What is it about message boards? (7/19/2006 7:30:48 PM)

I just checked back with the DC thread and holy moly........there was one frantically typing person there!!! I am thinking that prolly counts for a good 2/3 of whats left of Bush's approval points right there! She may be sadly disallusioned politically but DAMN can that woman type!

I did.  The owner didn't like it very much.  For some reason the, "But I can do it on Collarme," excuse didn't fly very well with the police.  <shrugs>  Beats me.

No kidding, although I think it's actually a bloke.  I think the movie of his posts comes out in October.

puella -> RE: What is it about message boards? (7/20/2006 3:29:59 AM)

Hello  Lilmissbossy....

I have no idea bout this Dixie Chicks thread everyone is posting about here, but if that was what you were talking about specifically.. you perhaps should have noted that.

Because if not... I really think that your point is a bit weak.... People come to these forums specifically asking questions and inviting advice.  I know that I, for one, have actually benefited from the advice (and the wideness of the range of it) given.

I do not think that it is about impressing people with cleverness, and those who are rude and flame, are usually called on it, not clapped on the back as being 'cool'.

I am sure there are those who come here for some sort of warped attention whoring...but I would guess that those numbers are not all that great.... what kind of attention do you get in a post, respond, post respond format?

Again, this might well be about a specific thread here... but in general, I think people are just making (proper) used of a message board forum to ask, answer and discuss lifestyle (and other) questions among a group of like-mined (to what ever degree that is possible) people.

I suppose I would ask... if you don't want others advice, or to read solicited advice given to others .... why on earth would you come to a message board area which is specifically designed to meet that need in a community?

Just a thought...
