That people stop talking like human beings and enter this bizarrely surreal world of being self-righteous experts on every subject?

People typing in this 'desperate to impress, romantic, holier-than-thou' pseudo-language and ending their postings with some deep meaningful signature, or flaming other posters in some meaningful attempt to try and sound more intellectual.

I cringe at the way some people seem to think being a font on screen allows them to be rude/patronising/smartarsed without any comebacks.

You don't have to romantically impress people with your cleverness, your intellectual signatures or your drama-filled put-downs just because you're not face to face with that person.

Note:  I laughed at this point because I include myself in this, I'm as bad as anyone.  It seems to be a standard behaviour trait of message boards. [:D]

You know what Plato said about rhetoric, don't ya? He likened it to ''cookery'', implying that it was an art of appearance rather than truth. [;)]

I believe it to be something very basic. Itis a bit like the little dog fronting up to a fence and challanging a large dog walking past. The little bloke is brave untill there is no fence and then he either runs and hides or is very quiet and well behaved..  Lots of bravado here in forums and chat rooms when you can hide behind nics in the almost autonomy of cyberspace.. Years ago I Gor Role Play in MSN I had one clown really lace into me and made the mistake if attacking Neets and my family with a verbal vicious attack filled with threats.... Took me two weeks and then I knocked on his front door in his jocks.. I watched him piss his pants and could smell the pong as he shat in hios draws.. I asked him very politely to post an appology and to cease his abuse and threats else the Feds would be knocking on his door with an arrest warrant followed by my lawyers with a civil suit....

Hello  Lilmissbossy....

I have no idea bout this Dixie Chicks thread everyone is posting about here, but if that was what you were talking about specifically.. you perhaps should have noted that.

Because if not... I really think that your point is a bit weak.... People come to these forums specifically asking questions and inviting advice.  I know that I, for one, have actually benefited from the advice (and the wideness of the range of it) given.

I do not think that it is about impressing people with cleverness, and those who are rude and flame, are usually called on it, not clapped on the back as being 'cool'.

I am sure there are those who come here for some sort of warped attention whoring...but I would guess that those numbers are not all that great.... what kind of attention do you get in a post, respond, post respond format?

Again, this might well be about a specific thread here... but in general, I think people are just making (proper) used of a message board forum to ask, answer and discuss lifestyle (and other) questions among a group of like-mined (to what ever degree that is possible) people.

I suppose I would ask... if you don't want others advice, or to read solicited advice given to others .... why on earth would you come to a message board area which is specifically designed to meet that need in a community?

Just a thought...

And a very good one...[:D]

It wasn't

My point wasn't that it isn't a valuable place for advice, that was your point applied to my post.

You seem to be demonstrating better than I could possibly have wished what the original post was really about.  It wasn't about "is this a good, friendly place for advice", it was about people being needlessly smart, over-clever and inflammatory just to appear more intelligent than the original poster.
Voila.

Most attempts made at intelligent debate, gets almost no response.

Any thread that doesn't include: a flame, a lie, a mispoken truth, a misrepresented fact, a slam on a current political figure, a slam on a past political figure, a slam against America, a slam against a race or religion, a slam against a Gorean, a slam by a Gorean, or general whining ... isn't going to get much of a response. Threads including two to four of the above are mathematically guaranteed to get at least three pages of responses. Threads in the five to eight range, will be the Dixie Chicks post.

I'm surprised Google hasn't melted down over the Dixie Chicks thread. [:D]

You are so true lass... I've lost count of good threads set up for informative discussions just left unanswered in favour of the contentious ones. It's why a few folk I know are posting or even visiting less and less. After this comming weekend, I'm sitting down and pulling out of a number of sites for this reason and reducing my posts even in CM.. As things stand like some I know here in CM, I only stay because of some good folk whose company and thoughts I enjoy..
