Here is an article in the NY Times about how the mechanics of the Republican Convention work
and could work to block Trump.

It has a nice flowchart which lays out the possibilities.

haven't peeked at the article yet, but this might be an appropriate place to add a few tidbits.

bama and I were recently talking about this, that trump is doing better in states with open primaries. there is in that, some truth in saying that democrats might be helping republicans pick their nominee.

also, some recent exit polling showed that had it been a two man race between trump and cruz, the voters who voted for Kasich and Rubio would have very disproportionately gone for cruz.

i see those two things as being favorable for cruz in a contested convention.

But neither are liked by the party machinery, so I dont know if they will hold their nose.

What's even more interesting in that link, is that the suggestion is made that few votes would be needed to 'elect' a party candidate.

Whereas in history, there were times many ballots, sometime dozens, were required to pick a candidate. Some democracy has been restored to the process but not that much as both party's conventions are stacked against the people's choice by whom one might still describe as the party bosses now called the establishment.

I have a sneaking suspicion that party crashing happens on both sides of the fence. Though, I can't see that much of it going on to have that great of an effect.

The problem is choices. There are too many of them and none of them are that great. Trump is the only one pulling excitement, unfortunately. Had the party had a better option, or less candidates running, Trump may not have been as successful as he is. Like you mentioned with the polls, I strongly believe it would be a much closer race had there only been Trump and Cruz, Cruz may have even been in the lead. Kasich and Rubio really need to take a step back and decide what's more important to them. Who knows, maybe the two dislike Cruz that much that they're more than happy to take votes from him.

It seems unlikely to me that Trump will not get the nomination. Personally, I don't like the idea of an establishment messing with things to favor how they believe it should turn out. Much like the left side and their Super Delegates.

The difference is, though, these are the rules. It's not just about the "party establishment" taking over and imposing it's will (Cruz isn't an "establishment" candidate, either; that's Rubio or Kasich) on We the People. It's like the House of Representatives voting on the next President if there isn't a majority electoral college vote-getter. A plurality isn't enough. I'm not sure how the vote in the House is decided (simple majority, 2/3 majority, etc.), but that body could end up choosing the next President of the US, even against a simple majority vote of the populace.

charmer, if I can add on to what desi's saying...I more or less agree with his premise that its not the "establishment messing with things"---not only are their rules in place but as I understand it, the delegates who will be doing the voting at a contested convention are elected representatives.

about Kasich and Rubio, I think the latter got so beaten so badly this past weekend and is trailing so much in florida that if doesn't win there and yet stays in the race, it would indeed be hard to know what he's thinking. his team though seem to think they are better positioned in many of the states who haven't voted yet.

in terms of Kasich, it looks like he'll win ohio, and given how important ohio is in the general election, I wonder if he's thinking that could be a feather in his cap in a contested convention.

I get these are the rules. What I'm saying is, to put it more bluntly, I think the system sucks.

I will throw this one out there. How about they don't vote for him! Would that work do you think.

Christ there are so so many threads now on here re Buffoonery (trump) should have his own forum.

Cruz isn't far behind delegate wise so there is still modicum of hope I suppose. Are there any unpledged dropped out of the race for I am a politic correct buffoon who utilised tact and diplomacy - delegates. (anyone)

But as I say through all of time when the lowest common denominator appeals to the lowest common denominator then crazy times are afoot, and not in slippers, or is it sandals

The GOP is really in a bind. Mr. Trump's people understand the rooms, and have successfully convinced the 'The Low Information Voters' that Mr. Trump is the best guy for the job. Years ago, Mr. Trump stated that if he ran for the White House, he would only win if people were stupid. Seems that is so far a true statement. Also, that Mr. Trump has sewed up the nomination as things are right now. If he is not chosen, he has threaten to run as a third party. So essentially, he has successfully blackmailed the whole of the RNC into submission.

So he can act like a total asshole. He can be as much a Nazi as he wants; because the stupid people in American (whom just happen to vote Republican it seems) do not bother to think about his words and concepts. Much less on what he can accomplish on behave of the American people.

Now if the RNC changes its rules, Mr. Trump will rightly sue in court. If the RNC changes its rules, it loses all integrity to be taken seriously by anyone in the future. Tough position to be in....

.....but they are the ones that created the Lunatic Party! Now they are paying in dividends for their mistakes. If the actual Republican voters were intelligent, they would vote Democrat. Would send a signal to the RNC that those people want individuals with integrity rather than showmanship.
