BTW, if anyone here "wants" a password manager, here's the description for the one I use, which is free and cross platform.
https://www.keepassx.org/

Here's their blurb:
quote:

The Official KeePassX Homepage

Just in case you do not know what KeePassX is, here is a short description…

KeePassX is an application for people with extremly high demands on secure personal data management. It has a light interface, is cross platform and published under the terms of the GNU General Public License.

KeePassX saves many different information e.g. user names, passwords, urls, attachments and comments in one single database. For a better management user-defined titles and icons can be specified for each single entry. Furthermore the entries are sorted in groups, which are customizable as well. The integrated search function allows to search in a single group or the complete database.
KeePassX offers a little utility for secure password generation. The password generator is very customizable, fast and easy to use. Especially someone who generates passwords frequently will appreciate this feature.

The complete database is always encrypted either with AES (alias Rijndael) or Twofish encryption algorithm using a 256 bit key. Therefore the saved information can be considered as quite safe. KeePassX uses a database format that is compatible with KeePass Password Safe. This makes the use of that application even more favourable.

Not looking to pick a fight or create problems for others ok but there are something’s that you should never and I mean never do and that is give others access to your passwords .
If you and other split for whatever reason that shearing of information can be devastating. It leaves you totally vulnerable. Email accounts act

Not to diminish your post in any way, but if all that happened was somebody screwing with your email accounts, you got off light. That's a lot easier to fix than what some people have to do.

By the way, I *don't* have all of MP's passwords. His security clearance for his career kicks me out of that. Personal accounts are different.

Now, I mean no offense to anybody on the thread. I'm thrilled if everyone has always picked good partners, nobody ever had the vengeful ex or any of that stuff.

However...

We know that's not always how it works. I'd invite anybody to read Fet about the things some people do. Next time you're reading somebody's journal about outing, look to see if that person was somebody's ex.

It's not fully cross platform as of yet, considering that it's only in Beta testing for Chrome OS (which is what 99% of users on forums like these ought to be using, even though they don't). Full integration with Chrome OS is dubious, considering that it's not natively built as a webapp, and the Chrome OS Beta is a work-around tack-on.

The best full cross platform manager I've found is LastPass.com.

There are pluses and minuses to all of the password managers out there, but this is a decent article comparing the best ones available. Pick one with the features you want.

Nope not me. I don't give my passwords out even to my partner. Unless it is something of importance that needs accessed in case something happened to me.
Been there, done that.
It's not a matter of trying to hide things, it's about having some privacy. I don't ask for tape recordings of my husbands conversations with others, and to me that's what's like, totally giving up all privacy as an individual.
It all sounds very civilized, he would never, I would never, but statistically if things go sour, that's one of the first things a majority will do. Violate your space if they feel slighted.

Thanks for looking at the cross platform aspect of that password manager.

Much appreciate the clarification, which, for the topic at hand, would help protect passwords for those here who need to protect them from vengeful others.

However, reading this thread, it's clear that most don't have the problem of worrying about spiteful and vengeful people in the household.

I suspect a "test" is whether you can leave your wallet or purse on the kitchen table, and nobody will rummage through it.
If you (plural you) can't do that, then perhaps it's time for a password manager. :)

While I, myself, would use Linux over Chrome OS, the Chrome OS would contain all the utility someone who only uses the web would need, so, that's a reasonable observation.

This is great advice for the recent password-manager thread:
  • KeePass vs LastPass – Comparing the 2 Best Password Management Tools
  • LastPass vs. KeePass: What's the Best Online Password Management?

The articles explain the tradeoffs, where the good news is that intelligent people can differ in decisions they make; but all their ideas are good!
So I thank you very much for the suggestion; and I will add it to the password-manager thread so that others can benefit from the conversation.

I have a lot of his online passwords, and mine are written down in case they are needed.

Frankly though, I could do way more damage with other access that I have. I couldn't imagine though living in fear of the "what ifs".

    Agreed.

As a non-American, to get me my marriage visa, my husband needed to sign a statement where he assumed the responsibility for all my incurred debt for the next 10 years (regardless of divorce) and to maintain me at an income level of 125% the poverty line indefinitely (again regardless of divorce) unless I become a US citizen or legally work for 10 years.

Even if we divorce, and I have no access to any of his passwords, I could screw him over indefinitely. Life is too short for a constant dread of "what ifs".
