At age about six, I learned the word 'bosom'. It struck me then, as indeed it still does today, that it was the silliest-sounding word I'd ever heard. On the other hand, 'scrotum' always seemed to me to be one of the ugliest words, ever.

What word has always sounded silliest, or ugliest, to you?

Come to think of it, 'gusset' has always sounded both silly and ugly to me. But not at the same level as 'bosom' and 'scrotum'.

I get that. It makes me think of eyes popping out of peoples' heads - I mean, *really* popping out, Like Arnie Schwarzennegar's in Total Recall.

See, that's the sort of pomposity I'm used to, having been brought up in Surrey, England. Not a sofa or settee - perish the thought.

I did know someone at school once who thought that a 'divan suite' was an all-in-one that you wore to go diving in the sea. He wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, poor kid.

However, I must admit I have always enjoyed dining on chicken divan, but not while on a divan.

I also enjoy resting my feet on a hassock or footstool, but not on an ottoman.

Holla, as in "hollaback". This is one of the stupidest words that was ever coined and I automatically see any person who uses the term less intelligent than the average human being.

Yes. Apparently, I've been pronouncing it incorrectly all my life.

It's pronounced like "cough", right?

I was pronouncing it as if it rhymed with cow.

As if to rhyme with "bough."

My argument is that I had only seen the word, not actually heard it, so I just made the jump in my head that it was pronounced one way, not the other way.

Brought the man of the house delight to no end to hear me mangle that up the way I did.

If you talk about a Bakers Trough ( where a bakers kneads his dough), then that IS pronounced to rhyme with bough and the british town 'Slough'. I have no idea why, but that is how I was taught to pronounce it when I did my apprenticeship.

Common (but in my view, wrong) spelling: "S-H-A-N-'-T"

My contention is that apostrophes are used to signify that a letter ( or letters) is (or are) missing. Since this word is a contraction of: "shall not", I insist that it should be spelled: "S-H-A-'-N-'-T"

Another similar example is: " '-H-O" (the "rap" term for: "whore"). If you're skipping that many letters, it should be spelled: " '-H-O-'-E".

Just my linguistically logical brain droppings.

I dont believe you can have two contractions in one word, that is why it only has one apostrope. Shan't
Ho is slang....slang will be spelt as the user sees fit, but a "hoe" is a gardening instrument outside slang speak

Kaliko, you are not the only one who has trouble with "ough" words. It confuses people all the time, but I found this from grammerly....

From an English (mine) English perspective, the pronunciation should be as follows....
The ruff coated doe faced plowman strode thru the streets of skarboro coffing and hickuping thortfully.
there is a town just outside my home town called slough. pronounced slau̇( like Dvr said)
I used to think it meant sluff.

My favourite stupid word is nucular

Don't feel bad. That's one of those words that it depends on where you come from.

A lot of folks who come from more rural areas do pronounce it as 'rhymes with cough'. Sounds like 'a pig's troff' phonetically.

US versus British pronunciations. In the US, trough rhymes with cow.

British speakers including Canada and Australia will have the gh produce a F sound.

So no, you're not pronouncing it wrong since you are an American.
