From my understanding they usually make $12-$18 an hour for skilled work, usually keeping machinery running and leading crews. You seem to have a pretty bitter view of life. You don't need to project it onto me.

that is not all that much after years of working for an employer, of course it depends on how many hours they work too, if they get overtime pay, etc.. If I have a bitter view its cuz I have seen how poor people are treated here, especially black & hispanic people.. the racial tension is something I have never encountered until coming here.. its sad, I feel for them.. But I guess you & people like you would rather not have your perfect life disturbed by hearing about that.. [8|]

No,you're bitter generally. I really don't think you feel for anyone except for negative people.

for poor people there is a lot to be negative about.. so you think I should just ignore their plight? that I shouldnt express how I feel about how they are treated? that I shouldnt think about how things could be made better? hmmm..

Once again, don't project your negative state on others.

I will do what I want, I dont care if you dont like it..

Of course, you just want to harmonize with negative energy. It's what you do.

Your culture is different.. (here you dont get money for bottles or other garbage).. here there are laws that require people get paid for work they do, depends on the type of work tho.. The problem here is that when poor people do get work, it might only be 20 hours/week so they need 2 or 3 different jobs just to survive.. and there is less & less affordable housing for those people that earn low wages.. some people spend 50%, 60% or even more just on rent.. its hard for them to get ahead when the last week of the month they have to ration food or not eat so they can have enough money to pay rent.. they could be homeless tomorrow if they lose one of their jobs or get sick, etc.. here I see ads on craigslist posted by sleazy guys wanting a "girlfriend" (sex) in exchange for a place to stay, they prey on homeless desperate women.. its disgusting..

Are you sure you don't get money for garbage? I always see stuffs like 5cents refund on plastic bottles, but the location is in the US to get it!
I am sure American have recycling firms that will buy recyclable products.
Spending 50% to 60% for rent/mortgage is like normal here, even for the middle class.
Those craigslist ads are everywhere. Even in my country.
You guys don't have it harder than we do. You guys certainly don't have it harder than people in Indonesia and Malaysia.
I believe in every country, there will always be a sector of jobs that is plentiful always. But alot of people may find it too hard to do.

I believe super poor people should just work in food and beverage industry, at least they get free food at work.

I used to be super poor. I took home 1200, and my rent was 750 a month. I have survived on that. My meals were rice porridge and eggs and soya sauce. So I know what is it like to penny pinch. Those were the days where macdonalds was a luxury food to me. To even spend 2bux on a burger was a huge expense I gotta think heavily about.

Some people in NYC/San Francisco/Michigan/Maine/Massachusetts/Oregon/Idaho/Hawaii live off the money they make picking up bottles and cans, and turning them in at redemption centers.
News flash for those unaware of how desperate many people are especially older people.

Check out bottlebill.org
You can earn money in 10 states collecting bottles & cans

Greta check out you tube-- HBO documentary Redemption trailer.

And yes, I have heard of Hispanics complaining about illegals driving down wages.
Its not even new news.

This just reminds me of one of my girlfriends. First of all, her mom married a damn rich American man. The American dude was her stepdad. The apartment she lives in Singapore cost 10million that her step dad purchased. It's that kind of wealth. She spent 10 years in the US before returning to Singapore together with her whole family. And she came back telling me how the Americans take care so well of their elderly, the government give old people enough money to just enjoy their retirement at home, like no elderly in the US will ever have to fear poverty. Why is it Singapore is such a rich country and so many elderly are ransacking garbage and basically collecting things to recycle for money?

And I remember I was arguing with her that, not all old people doing these stuffs are doing it because they need to, but are doing it, because they are bored staying at home with nothing to do, and want to be doing something. They find it fun and they enjoy it. They also came from an older generation who just always feel the need to work, but were uneducated, so there is alot of modern job that don't suit them. They don't even speak mandarin or English. And the alternative is to work as a cleaner, which many may not like. So this recycling thingy works out for them. Many actually don't need to work, but choose to do it.

I just find chinese old people from old generation so ridiculously frugal, always have healthy money stash somewhere, but always live like in poverty, there was this story of this cleaner, who works for just 400 per month. Like seriously bad pay, and she's like 76 yr old. And then it was found out she had 700k of savings in her bank. Way more than enough for her to chillax and not work so hard, but she chose to continue working.

Unfortunately, how it was found out was, she got cheated by some China scam.

My own grandma was so bored, she signed up for a cleaner job but she lasted a week ha! And then decided baby sitting grand kids was much more fun. She was complaining she got enough of children! She's done her dues! And wanted to try some job. She's been a housewife all her life. And she can't speak English or Mandarin. She speaks a chinese dialect.
And basically, all she does is come over to my parent's place and boss around their maid and rotate and do that, she got 5 kids different homes to hang out in, all her kids got children, she got shitloads of grandkids to choose from to hang out with too. But she still actually signed up and tried to be a cleaner.

When I heard that, I laughed.

Greta, the leftist here talk about poor people in order to push their agenda. In reality, compared to other places in the world, there are no people living in poverty here.

Well, I think there probably is real poverty. People living on the streets seem to be alot in the US in certain places, and being homeless makes it difficult to get a job when you have no address.

Over here, homeless is rare, but also, Asians are very used to living in a very crowded environment. So they could rent beds, like one tiny room, there could be 4 bunk beds, so 8 people in a tiny room, sharing one toilet. And they'll rent that, and still have roof. I am not sure if Americans will be comfortable living in such tight conditions and may choose to instead just be on the streets. My own father has 9 siblings, and they grew up in a 3 room place. So parents get one room, and 5 kids per room for the other 2 rooms. And they are used to living all squashed together. I never had my own room, always had to share it with my brothers.

Oh, thank God for that revelation. I have been so misguided thinking there are homeless people and unemployed adults, children on school lunch programs, people without affordable healthcare, and people working two jobs at minimum wage.

So happy to learn the Reagan neoliberal revolution cured all our social/economic ills.

Boy, am I relieved![8|]

Glad I could help. You might consider that most the homeless are mentally ill and should be cared for in that regard. With our welfare system, nobody is forced into living in the street. I'm sorry that it doesn't fit your reason for existence. Perhaps you can move to Indonesia where your "compassion" may really be needed.

He typically polls poorly (greta75) with the exception of Russia (and some Ukrainians) and China... I can explain why that is with Russia; they are like the Empire, fading fast in world stage and required a man of strength and bravado (like that iron lady for they few of us who still remember her) to hold their fragmentation together – perhaps the most diverse nation on earth, certainly the largest. China likewise I suppose.

There is little to no welfare for adults under 65, with no minor dependents.
You are delusional.
Please share all the welfare benefits adults under 65, with no dependents receive.

So I guess all those people I saw sleeping in doorways and on the sidewalks under newspapers and pieces of cardboard, in San Francisco last month were just eccentric millionaires who preferred to sleep in the fresh air ? Nnanji. I really believe you ought to get a toilet roll holder fitted under your chin and see if you can find a wholesale supplier of toilet rolls.

Yes! It was a mirage, there are no poor people in the USA until we break into the top 20 poorest countries in the world.
[8|]

Hell of a mirage...............not only visual but nasal too. Man, we could smell some of them before we ever saw them. But no, there are no people living in poverty. What's the next step down from poverty ?? Admitted we were in the Mission District and heading for the Armory but they sure as hell were there. plenty around Haight Ashbury too.

Yes, it was all a mirage.
There are no poor people, no homeless people, or people living in poverty here.
They all get welfare, unless they are mentally ill and refuse the generous welfare food and housing.
Cover your eyes next time and wish it all away.
No poverty in this country.

The states I have lived in dont pay you for bottles & recyclables.. people put bottles etc in recycle bins to keep that stuff out of the landfills, as its the right thing to do, not to make money on it..

Here there are areas where the household income is 10 or 15k/year, most households would be 2 or more living there so its bad.. how bad paying 50 or 60% of your income on rent is depends how much you make, the more you make, the easier it is to provide the basics, but if you are only working 20 or 30 hours/week and getting paid minimum wage ($7.25/hr), how far do you think that goes? there is a good reason why so many Walmart employees need section 8 & food stamps just to survive.. People want to work more hours but employers dont want to have to pay benefits (like unemployment insurance) so they keep employees as part-time.. If something happens and they lose their job they cant even qualify for unemployment benefits so they get screwed that way too..

Not to mention that there are more mentally ill people inside prisons than homeless on the streets, that should make you happier no?
mentally ill people belong on the streets surely or rather belong locked away 24 hours a day in solitary.

The bottle refund system wasn't created as a means for making money. It was intended as an incentive to reduce garbage pollution and encourage recycling. And really, it should probably be expanded to include more items.
