This NYC ordinance doesn't seem like lefty/PC gone mad/totalitarian/communism etc to me. It seems like pretty standard liberal enshrining of good manners, the better to keep social interaction from turning nasty unnecessarily. You can carry on thinking of a transgender man as a woman, etc, etc. - you just don't get to make a political (or plain aggressive) point out of every interaction with him/her. I think it's essentially about 'live and let live', in short.

I think the bottom line is this: the jury may still be out on what we cis types think of transgendered people. We may not understand it, believe it or credit it. But that's not really the point: I think, firstly, we can assume that whatever they believe and whatever they do with their lives, it's probably not frivolous. I don't suppose anybody decides to take the transgender route because it looks like a bit of a fun option. It's big for them and things can't be easy for them. Secondly, it's no skin off our noses, surely, to give them the honorifics they want?

[Gawd. Sudden memory of working as a telephone charity fundraiser. The name came up of some African guy. His title, listed on the screen in front of me: King. So, I addressed him as such. Probably as mad as a mongoose - but why should I care?]

I got this one solved. Don't use titles. I have solved so many things is it unreal. but think about it...

At the restaurant, you are at the front but there is some waiting time, the host(ess) asks "Name and how many ?". Later "The Jones party, we are ready for you, please come to the front".

Just start using first names and be done with it. In a professional setting just give up on Mr. and Mrs.

Like the Muslim Women wearing Hijab being IDed, instead of a picture you put a thumbprint. then at airports or whatever they have that tape they use at no ID check cashing places. They stick their thumb on it and it takes their print and then you stick it to a transparent sheet and compare by putting it over their ID.

Personally, I don't use titles. I don't call cops sir, or judges your honor. I tailor my words to avoid the use of these. If everyone did this there would be no problem. Also, if these people weren't such big fucking babies there would be no problem. You can call me any goddamn thing you want. First of all I have to respect you to even consider your opinion, and even then I remember something I learned when I was like five years old.

Whatever happened to that ? Now everyone, especially not totally normal, are some kind of special snowflake or some shit like princess. I'll tell you what, in pubic I won't address many people. A few yes, but I just start out with what I wanted to say, I do not preface it with Mr, sir, ma'am, any of that, even their name ! (if I know it)

So in public, just refrain for using titles unless the person requests it. Like if you say "Jones party ready to be seated" and you go from the bar and shown to your table, if you say "It's Mr. Jones" THEN that is the way they should address you.

but we are getting to the point where they almost want you to guess, and that is bad.

And if there is a fine involved it is probably another case of government "rent seeking". In other words they want MONEY.

I think a really big issue is being missed, here.

I know a lot of the more sensitive types like to shout down anyone that disagrees with them and that has turned this thread into a "hate-on-rm-a-thon", but this is a base issue.

I've never been a fan of Crowder as a "source", but I did some checking and in this instance, they got the facts right; not the editorial content.

We are talking about the government fining people for speaking incorrectly . Forget the subject of this particular action (transgenderism). If this is allowed to stand, it's just a start.

Just imagine, if you will, lefties, that NYC was a bastion of far right extremism and they enacted a law that stated that if you don't use the personal pronoun of someone's birth, you could receive these kinds of fines. Just put yourself in that place.

For the "that would never happen" crowd: You may be right, but allowing the government this kind of power means that if the pendulum does swing to that kind of extreme, you might find yourselves on the ass end of this law.

So, forget the particulars. Is this the kind of power government should have?

They might really think that. That the government will give them superior rights. Ultraliberals think that different types of people need to be bestowed with different levels of rights by their government.

Well they are in for a rude awakening because rights are not bestowed by governments, you are born with them. Civilized peoples institute governments among themselves to protect those rights, not to take them away.
