But How did Major countries do?

US is like seriously not ranked well!

But I am also surprise Thailand did so badly. I consider that a super peaceful country, at least, I feel safer there than Malaysia, somehow. Yet Malaysia ranked at 30 and Thailand ranked at 125 geez! Could be because of their internal government unrest with their military keeps taking over the government. But interestingly while all that is going on, it doesn't affect day to day of Thailand happenings. The take over is always non-violent, it's like done so peacefully with no casualties.

All the 'most peaceful countries' are still pumping gasoline, petrol, benzin, diesel, etc. into their fuel tanks everyday, last I checked.

Not that I would expect anyone like you to make the connection (or certainly not the logical disconnect), there.

I wasn't making a distinction between internal or external. But when you live in a country where people can say what they want and own guns, what would you expect? Welcome to the "wild" west.

Thailand is in a violent border conflict with Cambodia for years, with artillery bombardents, military and civilian casualties. Not like daily shootings, rather infrequently but again and again. Not about internal violence but military aggression.

In this area at least, most of the violence is in the densely populated and low income areas. Human nature being what it is, it's not surprising at all. You can't expect people to live with the blight and poverty and not explode. My friend lives in Brightmore, one of the "bad" areas of Detroit and there are only 2 houses still standing on her side of the street. The other side isn't much better. The abandoned house across the street occasionally houses 3 teens who would rather stay there than live with their crackhead mother. I see kids playing by piles of garbage and wonder how much of a chance they have in life growing up surrounded by trash and violence. I'm not sure what the answer is, but I am not a bit surprised at our standing.

Not sure I'd phrase the last item that way. Not been my 'on the ground' personal experience, anyway. It does exist in some communities in the US, no question. Just a matter of how much natural-born paranoia some have vs. others, I suppose.

But from that appendix, I find this interesting:

"Number of refugees and internally displaced people
as a percentage of the population"

So then, accepting refugees by itself lowers the peace score. Wow, a few European countries are going to take a serious hit to their 'peace score' from misguided acceptance of war immigrants when comes the next tabulation.

Let them drown in the Mediterranean or the Aegean, but don't lower your peace score!

In any case, the US accumulating all those Irish and Russians and Germans and Polish and French and Hungarians and Africans and Mexicans and South Americans and Chinese and Dutch and Italians and, especially all those British and Protestants, and all those pilgrims escaping the British and Protestants, really did us in on that peace score. We 'accepted' (however reluctantly; everybody had to fight their way in or were dragged in) quite a collection of "can't get along" types from all over Europe and almost everywhere else, in that atavistic notion of 'nation building.'

She's a great singer but I wonder if her bodyguards carry guns?

Frankly speaking, WM, I tend to find the attempts to compare the US to countries like Iceland, Denmark, or Switzerland rather ridiculous. Dissimilar histories, dissimilar populations, dissimilar cultures, etc. The only common thread is some shared interest in democracy. But some people seem to think that's enough of a reason that we should all be just like "them". They ignore the fact that the US was created with some intent to not be like so many other European cultures. And no doubt, that intent comes with its own inherent good and bad traits. But as far as I'm concerned, it's all worth the risks if it gives me more options for controlling how I live my life.

It's a worthwhile observation. Mind you, I think the Icelanders are descended from people who the Vikings chucked out of their countries for being a bit at odds with the local society aren't they?

As for Bjork, I'd imagine that one of her bodyguards carries a dart rifle to subdue her if she attacks the wrong person...
