missturbation -> The man with 80 wives!! (7/21/2006 11:03:40 AM)

I watched a program the other night that scared the shit out of me. It was on channel four (U.K) and is part of a series called tainted love. It was about Warren Steed Jeffs. At first with the advertisement i thought it was going to be a light hearted look at polygamy but hell no.
Apparently he is the leader of a group called the fundamentalist church of jesus christ of latter day saints. Amongst other things they believe in polygamy and the presenter went to a town that is the foundation of the group. I aint seen nothing like it - the people there were like something out of the little house on the prairie right down to the way they dressed. It certainly did not portray a good image of polygamy. Jeffs is on the F.B.I list of ten most wanted men for things i wont go into here because it involves unmentionables.
I havent really got a question on this just that the image portrayed wasnt good for polygamy i guess.
The series continues next week with i love you, you and you so i guess ill see if the lifestyle gets a better rap in that one.

I'm a member of the church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-Day Saints ( aka Mormon) but od not in any way condone what this man does. The fundamentalists tend to take everything one step ( or fifty) too far. I agree that the segment did nothing to foster a good image of polygamy/polyandry/polyamoury.

You are referring to Colorado City up on the northern Arizona border.

The LDS Church banned poligamy long ago.

What Jeffs is doing is  arranging spiritual marriages of underage girls to men in their 40-50's.  Jeffs also takes the liberty of reassigning wives to different men if the original "husband" is not worthy.

Th women apply to the state for  suport for all their children. This is encouraged by Jeffs as "Bleeding theBeast"- meaning the US government.

They have been looking for him for some time now.

Dang hope they find his worthless ummm behind!  He will enjoy the marriages in prison.  I hate when folks that are cons make this life look bad.  And of course now all the vanillas will go crazy in this part of the country looking for the bad folk and hopefully not burning us at the stake or stoning us to death.

It was just so creepy. Hes even built a temple with ranches around it that people believe hes going to use to lead a mass suicide. He takes most of the towns money - one guy reckoned hed paid him millions for the priviledge of being in his for want of a better word cult. Men had had there wives taken away and reassigned. I tell ya if i had not learnt of polygamy through here it would have scared the life out of me concerning this lifestyle.

juliaoceania -> RE: The man with 80 wives!! (7/21/2006 12:16:15 PM)

I do not approve of what this man does, I will say that I do not see religious polygomy as inherently evil.  The motivations for the practice vary from culture to culture.

darkinshadows -> RE: The man with 80 wives!! (7/21/2006 12:29:32 PM)

It didn't portray polygamy in the best light - nor christianity/religion either.  Just goes to show, it isn't the religion or the lifestyle thats the problems - it is the people within them misusing them.

Do the ladies get magic underwear or is that for guys only?

When I saw that (I watched part of it, too), I found myself wondering how the hell this guy supports all these women and kids? But I guess that's his problem (and I would consider that a problem - how can anyone seriously do that with the cost of living thse days)?! Who would want to do that? I understand Poly, but this is mega-super-Poly - and way to expensive!

From what little I know about this kind of "lifestyle" he's essentially another deadbeat husband. There are plenty of serial procreators out there, 22 year olds with four kids by different women, working for minimum wage. Warren Jeffs just happens to stay married to them, I'm sure he believes he'll get some special reward in the afterlife for being so good. Religion can be used to prove or disprove anything. Though my argument that Jeebus wants me to spend all my time riding motorcycles is a bit sketchy.

When hearing this story for the first time..I thought- gee, D/s in action. The dream of having a male just run your life, being there to take care of your husband, helping your sister wives.. every subbies wet-dream.

But it doens't work. They stop educating the girls at 7th grade (I believe..could be 8th). The ones that have used the underground railroad are so foreign to the outside world, some return because they can't function in regular society. By the time they are 19, haey have a minimum of 3 kids. The young boys are basically run off to fend for themselves because the old men don't want the competition.

It's really heartbreaking.

ArtimisBlack -> RE: The man with 80 wives!! (7/21/2006 2:19:57 PM)

This may be a really stupid question, but why do these people listen to him? What makes him "king"? If someone decided to reassign your wife or marry off your underage daughter, or any of the things this man is accused of, why would you listen to him? What is his power?

servantforuse -> RE: The man with 80 wives!! (7/21/2006 2:22:55 PM)

I believe that Mr. Jeffs is now on tht FBI's 10 most wanted list. His days are numbered.

MySweetSubmssive -> RE: The man with 80 wives!! (7/21/2006 4:42:38 PM)

The thing that I've wondered, and never had answered, is what do they do with all the "extra" men in Mormon polygamy?

In most cultures, polygamy is (at least partly) a functional thing.  Men go off to war and are killed, and so the gender ratio is off.  I know in a few west African cultures men would marry their brother's wives if the brother died.  It was (again, at least in part) a "taking care of family" type of thing.  But this higher death rate isn't seen among Mormon fundamendalist men.  So where do they go?  I'm being a little tongue-in-cheek, but mostly serious.

MrrPete -> RE: The man with 80 wives!! (7/21/2006 5:23:03 PM)

Don't confuse poligamy with polyamory. Poligamy is actually MARRYING more than one spouse and is illegal.

I think it's in Nepal where it is legal to have more than one HUSBAND
