As it seems to me, theology per se hasn't as much to do with it as the hope and belief that a Christian will be more likely to honor and practice the ethical teachings of Christ in the conduct of their administration.

The fly in that ointment is that christians themselves cannot do not do that so how is it possible for anyone to expect other than what history has shown to be so?

I suspect that at this point any politician who made ethics and fair dealing a central plank in their platform and was trusted to mean it would have more appeal to a broad swath of the electorate than one who didn't or wasn't, Christian or not.

In my reading of history I have yet to find a politician who claimed to be unethical and untrustworthy.

Well he shouldn't although in 'accepting Christ' (new testament) that is the teaching...even as little as it is actually practiced.

That's the whole ruse. Nobody is elected to office without professing adherence to Christian beliefs but then all feel free to then act as they really want, all too unethical and immoral as they please...without reprisal. Hell both the Jewish and Christian bibles...sanction slavery and murder.

"immigration" as it's presented by the xenophobic isn't the same as having a sound immigration policy.

Even Bush Jr., and especially Reagan, would today be far left of the "all our economic woes are waves and waves of illegal Mexicans sucking up our resources" and "all Muslims are terrorists and even if they are citizens should be restricted" mania on which Trump based his run.

If you can parse out the Jesus in that, I'd be interested, if only as a fascinating case study in rationalization.

Something more than "baby Christian."
