The very idea of accepting the Christian theology, accepting Christ, being a 'believer' is required of all politicians regardless of its validity in fact...even having none. 'Accepting' Christ is thus ultimately means less than accepting the nomination but all presidential candidates must humble themselves to this mythology. It's as if the electorate says 'good, [he] accepts this ridiculous theology and superstition just like me.'

As it seems to me, theology per se hasn't as much to do with it as the hope and belief that a Christian will be more likely to honor and practice the ethical teachings of Christ in the conduct of their administration. I suspect that at this point any politician who made ethics and fair dealing a central plank in their platform and was trusted to mean it would have more appeal to a broad swath of the electorate than one who didn't or wasn't, Christian or not.
