Wearing a low-cut dress in a job application photograph dramatically increases a woman’s chances of receiving an interview, new research suggests.

A French study showed female applicants were 19 times more successful in securing job interviews when pictured in revealing clothing rather than more conservative attire.

The research carried out in Paris found that women stood a much greater chance of earning job interviews for both sales and accounting roles.


Dr Sevag Kertechian, a researcher based at Paris-Sorbonne University in the French capital, is to reveal the full findings of his study at the Appearance Matters Conference - the world’s largest event on body image and disfigurement - being held between Tuesday and Thursday.

The conference will see more than 200 appearance experts from across the world tackle issues including weight loss surgery, eating disorders and ‘ultra-thin’ dolls.

Dr Kertechian decided to research the impact clothing had on the recruitment process after realising it had never been studied.

As job advertisements came up over a period of three years he put two women forward for the roles.


Both have similar looks and near identical skills and experience on their CVs but were dressed differently in their application photographs with one wearing a low-cut dress and the other in round neck clothing.

Each woman was forwarded for 100 roles wearing the revealing outfit and 100 jobs in the more traditional clothing, to ensure the experiment was fair.

Dr Kertechian found the applicant wearing the low-cut dress captured the attention of the recruiters more successfully.

Among the 200 sales role applications, the low-cut dress submissions received 62 more interview offers than their counterparts.

From the 200 accountancy applications there were 68 more interview offers for the more provocatively-dressed candidate.

“Our results showed interesting trends as low-cut dresses significantly influenced the choice of the recruiters, even for accounting positions," said Dr Kertechian.

"Regardless of the job, whether customer-facing saleswoman or office-based accountant the candidate with the low cut clothing received more positive answers.

“The results were quite shocking and negative but not necessarily surprising – they show we need to conduct more research.”

Man if that happened to my kid, I'd have kick up a fuss about it! I do hate this religious favourtism. I went to school where women were forbidden to keep long hair. Christian school BTW, psycho Christian school. BUT if you were a Muslim, they allowed you to grow your hair. As it was considered vain, or something, undesirables. Yes although it was a Christian school, but it was reputable school where your kid's are guaranteed good grades if you go in, so it was sought after, and even other religious group wanted to put their kids in there, for the sake of the high quality teachers in it. And in a way, it is true, the education is impeccable. If you are lagging behind, the principal herself will personally adopt you and tutor you until you excel, which scares the shit of most people, so they better get good grades.

But the whole unfairness of that always pissed me off in school back then too, as I wanted to have long hair. And I thought it was ridiculous Muslims and Sikh gets exemption and get to keep their hair long. I mean I'm a fucking Buddhist! Not a Christian, even I shouldn't have to held to their Christian nonsense, but that's the way it is. Buddhism, peaceful religion, we just don't cause trouble and bend to everything generally. But not Muslims, no way. They would be screaming discrimination against their religion IF the Christians even try to impose their religious nonsense on their kids.

I mean, point is when the Christians chose who they should impose their ridiculous rules on. They thought it was okay to do that to Buddhist, but they fear to do it to Muslim. That speaks volumes.

It is legitimate in the Sikh religion that, they aren't suppose to cut their hair ever. But there is no such Muslim tradition that long hair is compulsory for their religion, so that's why I am picking on Muslims for getting the exemption.

Totally socially (and legally) unacceptable then and today, but a true story:

In my earliest days of working, I was in a company's "Personnel" department and one of the interviewers told me that the deciding criteria he applied to female applicants was the "elbow test."
Puzzled and intrigued, I asked him what that meant.
He said he would ask each female applicant to place her right hand on her right shoulder and her left hand on her left shoulder.
He would then ask them to walk toward a wall until they came in contact with it.
If the first thing to touch the wall was the lady's elbows, he did not hire her.

ETA: When the wife was going thru her diverce, her solicitor was a very nice lady but was Islamic and wore her head scarf in the office.
I ticked her off for doing that because I found it offensive and an affront to British tradition.
But, much to my chagrin, it's allowed these days.



Couldn't be farther from the truth.

They make demands on what muslim women must wear in France, but not in this country and there is no groundswell of support for it.

The day we bully women or anyone else into wearing clothes that the majority of us do not wear, is the day that England and what it stands for is dead. Thankfully, we're not France.

On the contrary, English tradition is the polar opposite of telling someone walking down the street minding her own business what she must wear.
