LadyPact -> How to find kinky people without Fet (7/24/2016 7:19:42 PM)

OK, folks. I get it. "The sky is falling... The sky is falling," and "Dear God, what will newbs do without open access to Fet"? One stop shopping just got taken away. Where, oh where, are people interested in kink going to go now???

People hate it when I say this, but the old methods still work. Being one of the people who got into this before I ever had a screen name, I have some tips for you.

To start, google is your friend!!! <Major city closest to you> + BDSM will show you where the events are. Every major event still runs it's own, independent webpage.

Books. Yeah, the old fashioned kind with words printed on pages. Every book ever published by Greenery Press still has "about the author" in the back. In "Screw the Roses, (Send Me the Thorns) alone, there are over a hundred references about real time groups.

Go to the flipping gay/alternative bar and/or drag queen-king show. Look for the bulliton board. The fliers about where kinky people meet are there!

Connect with your local LGBT community. Go to events like Pride. It is so easy to find kinky people there.

Vendors. You saw that shiny, new toy on the net? Ask them where they will be setting up shop. They will *tell you* where to find the kinky folks.

ANYBODY who has been into kink for more than ten years can tell you how to do this. The world didn't stop turning just because Fet isn't accepting new members.

When one door closes another one always opens

I am surprised no one has created a BDSM app for the cell phone yet. Events and people in your area! Or maybe they have and I haven't looked!

If you do an internet search for BDSM Munches you'll get several sites that list munches. Now, the problem is that most of those munches use Fetlife to announce when and where they meet. New people can't find that information since they can't join Fetlife. However, there is a way. Remember the town or city where the munch meets. Do a search for those kinksters from that town or city here on Collarspace. You should find a few profiles that don't seem like scammers. Write to those people. Ask them when and where the munch meets. If nothing else maybe they can tell you which person would have that information. You might have to write to several people but you should be able to get the information if you are persistent.

I have also read that Fetlife is allowing a limited number of new members every day. I would guess that those limited memberships get snapped up very fast. Just keep trying is my suggestion.

If a new member here wants to know where there's a munch in small town Wisconsin, they could also ask most of us if we would be so kind as to look that info up for them.

Glad I could do that for you, LadyPact.

I just thought of one other way. You might not be able to find someone who lives in your town. Many people don't list a town, just a state. Look around the forums here. See who has posted on a regular basis and seems to be sane. Write them a nice polite note. They might be persuaded to help you out and point you in the right direction. Many of the regulars here are also members on Fet.

OOPS, DesFIP beat me to it.

That's interesting. What was the reason Fet stopped accepting members?
NVM found it. I've said it before... KinkyToo had made some good headway on that site... It's a damn shame whatever happened to make them lose interest. It could have been big.

While I admit that I am biased on certain issues, I think it just got to the point where it reached critical mass.

It wasn't one reason. It was a bunch of reasons.

I'm better with leather bar analogies..

Let's say you owned a leather bar. In owning this leather bar, you were going to throw the biggest f^cking kegger the world has ever seen. It'll be great! You'll reach out to people far and wide. People who have been to keggers for decades and people who have never been to one before.

Then, at your kegger, you found out really bad stuff was happening to people. In the darker corners of your kegger, people were being sexually assaulted. People were using your kegger to gather info on other folks to use vindictively so people lost their jobs or their homes. Vile stuff, and it all stemmed from your kegger!

If you want to keep your regularly, scheduled kegger going, what do you do? I mean, at least 90% of the people who show up have an awesome time...

You do what every leather bar has ever done. You say, "you can't do that here".

You can't pass bad checks. You can roofie that girl over in the corner. You can't ruin people's lives during custody battles and you can't try to get someone to lose their career just because they were at the bar last Saturday.

And, if you did that last Saturday under the name TomX, you don't get to come back to the bar just because you took on the new name of DickX.

That's what Fet and @JohnBaku is doing.

This is a fast reply:

Fet is how I met my slut.

I would love to hope that someone here would invite me, but I do not discount the fickle nature of humans... therefore, I am not sure My slut, or myself would have known anyone on Fet to get an invitation, let alone, make a connection there.

I hope that Fet knows what it is doing.

Dang it. Stop that.[:-]

As an aside, I really enjoyed the time that I spent on K2. If it came back tomorrow, I'd hop ship in a New York minute.

DeepBlue47 -> RE: How to find kinky people without Fet (7/24/2016 10:54:14 PM)

Try Vanilla Umbrella. It's a dating app for kinksters. It's kind of small but hopefully it'll pick up.

Well, let's start at the beginning...

It's not for prestige or anything, but I can say with relative confidence that I would have gotten an invitation. I heard of it from one of my Leather Elders and, had I listened to him in the first place, I'd probably be member twenty thousand and something, rather than member <just under forty thousand, whatever> that I am.

That aside, I just don't think it's all doom and gloom.

ETA: I have to tell you, I'm really impressed with the people from the UK. This change happened and "BAM"! They started organizing.

Get out webpages up. Get community organizers together. Not "woe is me" but "what do we do". That kind of drive and ambition is amazing!

LilJuly76 -> RE: How to find kinky people without Fet (7/25/2016 4:55:16 AM)

all good advice LadyPact

I was never really impressed with fet to begin with.

the first time I joined was in 2010, ended up getting some play partners and through one of those play partners I found the Dominant I have been with for 5 years, we hit a rough patch where I decided I was no longer happy and I joined here, but now we're fixing it up so it's much better.

Fet itself is too black, it's hard for me to see because of the dark background.

the first time I joined, I joined some submissive groups in wherein I found 2 types of newbies posting all the time:

1. ones that wanted to fuck men who ended up with old school Dominants and than complained that this wasn't BDSM.
2. ones that hooked up with users and abusers and they refuse to call the cops because it would make them look like an idiot. Didn't matter if some moron told her she had to give everything to him.

When I found my owner, we both got rid of our profiles there and just recently got new ones. Still the same ole place and still black background. I came across this place by accident and joined because the background is white and not black, much easier to see.

Whiplashsmile4 -> RE: How to find kinky people without Fet (7/25/2016 7:56:11 AM)

I swear I made a posting on this thread... or was that another thread about Fetlife?

OsideGirl -> RE: How to find kinky people without Fet (7/25/2016 8:27:26 AM)

I'm always amazed, that considering such a large chunk of our population has grown up with the internet at their finger tips, they can't find information.

I have always been impressed with the "Keep On" attitude of the UK, period. I remember that there had been a Tube bombing during rush hour. My friend told me that people just bought bicycles and rode to work.

As you know, I don't impress easily.

Within hours of the FL announcement of closing sign ups/invite policy hit, there was a guy in the UK who took the bull by the horns, and did a writing about himself and the other munch organizers in the area to do an in-person meet up. Get webpages up and maintain them better. Be (Dear God, can I say it) PROACTIVE. New people can't sign up to Fet anymore to find events? Focused on the solution. Not the problem.

For the UK folks, this isn't the first go round. The general attitude seems to be, "we did this before when Informed Consent" folded... We'll do it again".

We here in the USA could learn a lot from those people.

I was never really impressed with fet to begin with.

After that popping sound that was the result of me pulling my head out of my own ass because I was shortsighted, I absolutely was and am still amazed with Fet's ability to put events at people's fingertips. Find events, no muss, no fuss, no effort.

I forget who put the link up on these boards but there actually is a program that allows you to change that. I tried it, didn't like it, and decided to deal with the black.

The first honest question is, doesn't some of that sound exactly like what happens here? How many "new" members are just HNGs?

I'm going to say something about that second thing.

I consider not going to the cops during the first six months of the stalking issue the second biggest mistake of my entire life. It is topped only by ever meeting that person in the first place. I can't tell you the number of people that practically begged me to go to the authorities. Even my husband's boss offered to facilitate the charges. (Military types can actually do that.) I don't have the words to articulate the shame, guilt, and regret that I have about it. I live with it every day.

People do forget one thing about my case. At the time, I was sitting on a military post, under a roof that military housing provided, and the words "consensual kink" are not in Uncle Sam's dictionary. Oh, one other neat, little factoid. May 2013, when the crap started? The little post I lived on made national news for a "sex scandal". It was really just swingers but people really did lose their homes, their benefits, some lost their careers, and in a couple of cases, they lost their freedom. Uncle Sam has a really bad attitude about partying on his lawn.

I told you that to tell you this. When you have a stalker, your consent got violated, you've been outed or whatever, this weird thing happens. You start receiving a sh^t ton of email. People who got through the experience, people going through the experience, a friend of a friend that it's happening to, and just this avalanche. (I want to say, there are certain people out there who helped me tremendously. They were God sends.) You learn in a very short time just how many cases are out there. It ain't pretty and it ain't just a few.

This is my own personal opinion. I don't have 'insider info' on this subject in any way. Nobody on the staff of Fet has told me anything to support my personal belief.

Knowing that perpetrators use Fet as a vehicle to target people, often using sock puppets to hunt them down, follow their activity, where they go, etc, something had to happen. The block feature wasn't helping cause, hey, just create a new screen name. Revenge porn? All it takes is a few clicks to upload pictures. Dozens of issues. Won't stop all of it but it might slow it down some.

I'm glad you found something that works for you. [:)]

About Fet though, if I were @JohnBaku, I would be trying to find a way to make that Events tab view only. I know it would probably make the RSVP even harder on event organizers. (Got the t-shirt. RSVPs are a PITA.) Set up some idea about probationary accounts where current (old, bad term there) could tick a box on whether they wanted to receive mail from 'new' members (accounts under 90 days old) or not. Could be hugely beneficial to munch organizers. Some kind of plan that's actually more to the plan.

I love the UK. I have always enjoyed traveling there as well as Germany and Poland. Most local events are plastered on the street corners in town. All you have to do is stroll through town to know what is going on. No internet required. If you are in London, you can always stop in to Cocoon's shop. They will have flyers for all the events within 100 kilometers.

Western Europe does not treat BDSM as a taboo like a lot of the USA. I do wish the USA would relax about it.

Have there been changes at Fetlife, and if so, what are they?
