RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Unflappable American teenager Virginia Thrasher won the first gold medal of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Saturday, holding her nerve against two Chinese Olympic champions to clinch the women's 10m air rifle event.

The 19-year-old U.S. college champion edged out China's Du Li, gold in Athens in 2004, with an Olympic-record score of 208 in the sport's new finals format. Defending Olympic champion Yi Siling, also of China, took the bronze medal.

The youngest of the eight finalists by several years, Thrasher established an early lead after battling with the Russian shooter Daria Vdovina, who stumbled midway through the competition and finished fifth. ~Yahoo News

Well I think if you give that girl a real gun she'll never need a restraining order.

I thought they had real rifle shooting. You know, guns are totally banned in only a few countries. They just make it hard as hell to get one in many.

It's not easy to be a sharp shooter.
A lot of people here still hunt. It's a way of life.
We live off the land. We sharp shoot for food or kill predators.
It's them or us.

According to your profile you are in Nevada ? I am pretty sure there you can just drive around with the barrel of a shotgun sticking out the window. I think that's cool, I bet the armed robbery raste there is damnear nothing.

As far as sharpshooting, yes, it is not that easy. In a contest though, the target does not move. And to shoot humans, very few move fast enough for it to be a problem. But if you got a raccoon eating your garden in the middle of the night, it can be damn hard to hit its ass. Especially in the dark when to have to sit there with the lights off to catch the motherfucker.

I used to be a deadeye but I doubt it now that my eyesight has deteriorated. However it is as much a matter of geometry as eyesight at least. I mean, 20 years ago I could hit a bird in flight with a BB gun. I actually had witnesses but they died off, my neighbors. They didn't fuck with me. But I used the sights.

Shooting from the hip, envisioning the geometry is much more important than visual acuity. I can do it, but never practiced the fast draw. Maybe I should. Wonder what the neighbors would think.
