RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Unflappable American teenager Virginia Thrasher won the first gold medal of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Saturday, holding her nerve against two Chinese Olympic champions to clinch the women's 10m air rifle event.

The 19-year-old U.S. college champion edged out China's Du Li, gold in Athens in 2004, with an Olympic-record score of 208 in the sport's new finals format. Defending Olympic champion Yi Siling, also of China, took the bronze medal.

The youngest of the eight finalists by several years, Thrasher established an early lead after battling with the Russian shooter Daria Vdovina, who stumbled midway through the competition and finished fifth.

Rumour over here is that she has tested positive for drugs, and will have her medal taken from her.

Shame, as anyone with the surname: "Thrasher" deserves a gold medal.

Absolutely with you on that. She deserved a gold medal before even setting off for Rio.

Comely-looking wench, isn't she? She could thrash me any day. Ding dong, mmh, eh?

Hitler did a cursory meet and greet thing, iirc: it was Roosevelt who blanked him.

I remember seeing that on a video once. That was such a strange Olympics.

Congratulations to Virginia, well done in representing her country in the Games. Her hard work and diligence paid off.

How is it exercise at all?

Thrasher must have been coached by the greatest air rifle marksman in the world, freedomdwarf1!

I think an American winning an event that involves skill with guns is a bit like a Brit winning an event that involves expertise in moaning about the weather.

Still, well done to her.

That is pretty much what Hitler thought of Jesse Owens.

T^T

Really? I had no idea that Jesse Owens was so good at complaining about the weather nor that Hitler admired him so much for it.

Like an isomorphism. Hitler believed that Owens had an unfair advantage because he was half animal. He thought it was like a human racing a tiger. Owens won, but Hitler refused to acknowledge him and do the standard putting the medal on him thing.

And maybe you're right. Expecting people from other countries where very few have guns or shoot, it could be reasonably assumed the USians would have an advantage in that, if for no other reason than sheer numbers of gun owners and shooters.

So I think the analogy is true

Hitler ? Are you serious?
He is dead. Greatest celebration.
I am American, we celebrate our families.
Tired of the bs. Good wishes:

Huh ?

You should elaborate on that with some detail or provide a cite because that is not how I got it.

I'll tell you. Once I was shooting competitive trap. I'd had oral surgery on a Thursday and showed up for a regularly scheduled competition the next Sunday. When I unpacked my shotgun I suddenly realized that it was going to hurt to have my face on the stock when the shotgun recoiled. I mentioned it to my team and was thinking about finding a replacement. One of the guys, not on the team, said, "here, try this," and handed me a OxyContin. I thought what the hell and swallowed it. I never shot better in my life. Seriously, I felt like whatever I was doing at the time was exactly what the universe wanted me to be doing. My concentration was so into each individual shot that I just never missed.

Well I think if you give that girl a real gun she'll never need a restraining order.

I thought they had real rifle shooting. You know, guns are totally banned in only a few countries. They just make it hard as hell to get one in many.

T^T

Yes there are 15 shooting events, six for women, nine for men. We have good prospects in at least the shotgun events.

Its target practice:
Hit the bulls eye.
It's not easy to be a sharp shooter.
A lot of people here still hunt. It's a way of life.
We live off the land. We sharp shoot for food or kill predators.
It's them or us.

According to your profile you are in Nevada ? I am pretty sure there you can just drive around with the barrel of a shotgun sticking out the window. I think that's cool, I bet the armed robbery raste there is damnear nothing.

As far as sharpshooting, yes, it is not that easy. In a contest though, the target does not move. And to shoot humans, very few move fast enough for it to be a problem. But if you got a raccoon eating your garden in the middle of the night, it can be damn hard to hit its ass. Especially in the dark when to have to sit there with the lights off to catch the motherfucker.

I used to be a deadeye but I doubt it now that my eyesight has deteriorated. However it is as much a matter of geometry as eyesight at least. I mean, 20 years ago I could hit a bird in flight with a BB gun. I actually had witnesses but they died off, my neighbors. They didn't fuck with me. But I used the sights.

Shooting from the hip, envisioning the geometry is much more important than visual acuity. I can do it, but never practiced the fast draw. Maybe I should. Wonder what the neighbors would think.

T^T

Either that they want to get along with you, or they would swat you.

How about ballroom dancing?

What are you talking about, CD? It pretty much stands to reason to me that a good shooter might well come from the USA. Why would 'hating' come into that - any more than Switzerland might produce a lot of good skiers and that should produce 'hate' in me too?

That is actually a sport, you are moving around, and if ballroom dancing is anything like you see like in dancing with the stars, that takes alot of fitness. Quite a few overweight celebrities have lost weight just doing it.

I'm actually looking forward to the women's gymnastics competition. The U.S.A has been on the up and up for some time. They won gold in London four years ago, and will likely get a podium finish this year.

As an American of Romanian descent though, I have to root for Romania's team.
