Charles6682 -> Stop calling them ISIS (8/11/2016 9:39:06 AM)

I hear people in the news ask why President Obama won't call them ISIS, instead calling them ISIL. The fact is, ISIS is an anicent Egyptian Goddess. Calling this terrorist group ISIS is an insult to those who honor and respect this ancient Goddess. Imagine if a terrorist group started calling themselves J.E.S.U.S. I wonder how well that would fly in the news. I wonder if the media gets a kick out of this insult to a religious deity? Its ok to insult other religions, just as long as its not Christianity, right? Smells like a double standard to me.

Greta75 -> RE: Stop calling them ISIS (8/11/2016 9:44:12 AM)

lol, I would love a Muslim Terrorist group to start calling themselves J E S U S.

That be awesome!

Can you imagine, JESUS just bomb the crap out of like 100 ppl! JESUS just raped like Yazadis!

LMAO!

Sorry not Christian, as you can tell!

But even if they named themselves BUDDHA, I still think it's funny.

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: Stop calling them ISIS (8/11/2016 9:55:48 AM)

ISIS stands for Islamic State in Iraq and Syria and is an extremist militant group that rules by Wahhabi/Salafi law.
It's an acronyn - hence it is all in capitals.

Isis, is the name of the Egyptian deity and was the goddess of the sky and nature.
As a proper noun, it has a capitalized first letter, the rest is in lower case.

Two very different animals even if pronounced in the same way.
One is no way an insult to the other.
Only a blathering ignorami would associate the two as being the same. [8|]

Which is what? Two people? I dunno if you've noticed but adherents to ancient Egyptian religions have one thing in common. They're all dead.

Well, except for the pagans. But those people are fucking nuts and shouldn't be encouraged.

No, at this point in time, it's okay to insult anything to do with white heterosexual men, so not only is Christianity fair game, but it is insulted regularly on an ongoing basis.

Who worships Isis these days? The Egyptians are all moslems now (or they will be as soon as they finish wiping out the coptics).
The big objection to the term ISIS is the cretins who call themselves that slightly eccentric approach to islam, and their lack of a state. The media over in the middle east prefers the term "daesh" for them, as do a lot of non wahabi-fundamentalist moslems over here.

It would be awesome if there weren't any such groups.

Of course you do. It is just another example of your nature.

DommeinRochester -> RE: Stop calling them ISIS (8/11/2016 11:05:17 AM)

As a quick aside... there are quite a few Pagan folks that follow the Goddess Isis.

Really? Do they even have the (tiny) numbers that the Thor worshippers have next to mainstream Wiccans?

Could you show your working on that one? Any (non-Hindu) polytheistic deity is a pagan sort in these days of desert sect monotheism, surely?

Also...one of my favourite adult toons (Archer) changed the name of their spy agency from Isis, because Archers Isis didnt employ terrorists.

http://www.npr.org/2014/10/13/355769259/fx-show-archer-to-drop-isis-name

The rise of the Islamic State, also known as ISIS, has made it difficult for organizations and companies to carry the burden of a moniker now associated with the Islamist militant group.

RACHEL MARTIN, HOST:

And now this - we have an update on the drive to eliminate ISIS.

STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:

We do not mean eliminating ISIS from Iraq and Syria, much as many people would like to do that. For now, we just mean eliminating ISIS from corporate brands and pop culture.

MARTIN: Some companies have had to drop the acronym ISIS. Now a fictional spy agency has had to do the same. The FX animated series "Archer" has decided it's time to pull the title from the spy organization at the heart of the show.

INSKEEP: International Secret Intelligence Service will no longer be known as ISIS.

(SOUNDBITE OF TV SHOW, "ARCHER")

H. JON BENJAMIN: (As Sterling Archer) So, yeah, I'm an ISIS agent, and that Ramon guy's a Cuban agent.

THOMAS LENNON: (As Charles) So this spy agency, is it like the real CIA James Bondy deal or what?

BENJAMIN: (As Sterling Archer) Charles, ISIS employs some of the world's foremost intelligence analysts, covert operatives and scientists.

INSKEEP: Well, of course. Don't you know that? Now, "Archer's" ISIS does not employ radical terrorists, instead, often fighting them. So to avoid confusion, it was time for a change. The show's producers say the only reference to the name will be in the upcoming sixth season premiere in January.

MARTIN: The first episode will open with Malory Archer - she's the spy agency's matriarch - explaining that ISIS has been taken over by the CIA. Behind her, an ISIS logo will be taken off the wall and rolled out the door.

INSKEEP: Now, that plot point was actually set up at the end of season five, at a time when network executives were already raising concerns about the name ISIS. In this scene, Malory negotiates a shady deal with the CIA to revive ISIS as a private firm handling CIA business.

PeonForHer -> RE: Stop calling them ISIS (8/11/2016 12:38:44 PM)

And then, of course, there was the poor family mutt, Isis, in Downton Abbey. I heard they had to let her die off quietly because her name had become an embarrassment. (Though the show's makers claimed it was coincidental.)

I don't see how he got there either. Pagan is a 15th century coinage (originally derogatory) for non-Abrahamic religions.

ISIS, Isil, IS, Daesh and Da'ish.... Blame the media for their inconsistencies.

WhoreMods -> RE: Stop calling them ISIS (8/11/2016 12:51:54 PM)

There may not be an answer.

Your assumption is wrong.
Not any polytheistic deity is a 'Pagan'.

Pagan~istic perhaps, but not a Pagan.
As a Pagan, I take umbrage at any insinuation that we follow or worship any sort of 'deity'; we don't.
We (loosely) don't like Pagan(ism) being called a 'religion' either.
And we are often (and mistakenly) confused with the Wiccans or Satanists.

Paganism is a way of life, a philosophy if you like, rather than any type of religion.
We don't have any sort of written tome like the Qur'an or the Bible.
We don't have any sort of 'deity' in the normal sense of the meaning of the word.
We don't have anyone or anything that we hold (collectively) in reverence above us as individuals.
We use an elaborate story to explain the seasons to those that follow us.
We have special days (the equinox's) to mark the crossovers from one season to the next.
It's nothing like any sort of religion.

So... anyone that follows Isis as a deity, ain't a Pagan. Simples! [:D]

WhoreMods -> RE: Stop calling them ISIS (8/11/2016 1:16:15 PM)

Either that or you're not a pagan, and don't understand the term you're misprisioning to describe yourself.

It's much earlier than 15th century - it goes back beyond anything christian.

From pantheos: Paganism is simultaneously a prehistoric and postmodern religion-it is as ancient as the fertility symbols associated with the veneration of gods and goddesses tens of thousands of years ago, while its newest forms have emerged as recently as the mid-20th century.

The religions subsumed under the terms Pagan and Paganism are one thing, the terms themselves are another.

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: Stop calling them ISIS (8/11/2016 1:45:54 PM)

So the Romans gave the ancient practice a latin name.
Whoopsie-do!!
And ever since then, it has been mis-used.
They even named coinage after it.

That doesn't detract from the origins which are waay beyond Roman times and christianity.
I don't subscribe to the modern (aka, Roman) ideas.
