Not only have we produced the greatest empire that ever stalked this planet.

Pound for pound we're streets ahead in sport.

Yanks have 26 golds; we have 16.

We're a fifth of the population of the Yanks at a conservative estimate, so with your population we'd have 80 gold medals at the very least.

Americans you're shit and you're wasting our fuckin' time with your mediocre competition.

The only sporting nation that can live with us is Oz - pound for pound.

The rest of you lot - pack it in and go for a walk or something because you're massively out of your depth with the English and our prized prisoner colony.

Legends of everything.

Sport, empire building, tea drinking, corporal punishment....you name it, these people who we have to share this planet with us need to go.

Put them on the fuckin' moon or somewhere equally unimportant because they're contaminating our excellence.

jlf1961 -> RE: Pound For Pound The Very Best (8/15/2016 1:09:47 PM)

Okay, the UK is not too shabby, but let me ask you a couple of questions, considering history.

1) How long would the UK (and by extension, its colonies) would have survived dependent on convoys from Canada across the Atlantic with Karl Dönitz's Uboats playing havoc with those life dependent convoys?

2) Considering that, during the Battle of Britain, while the RAF was shooting down more Germans than the Germans were shooting down RAF planes, (even if the Brits bred like rabbits) how long would it have been before the number of pilots lost or put out of action would have crippled air operations?

While it is not true that the Americans won the war single handed, it is true that the British Empire could not have lasted more than a couple of years before being forced to sue for peace due to attrition.

So, with that being said, do you really want to stand by:

Well, we were very fortunate during WW2.

The Germans made only a half-hearted attempt to invade England - their real business was elsewhere.

Had they put their weight into it then no doubt we would have been conquered. As it were, we remained undefeated on home soil since 1066, a thousand years; which ain't a bad record by anyone's standards.

What you have to remember though, is that while the Germans had been preparing for war since the 1920s, we had spent our time demilitarising during the same period.

So, we had to put cardboard cut-out tanks into fields to give the Germans the impression that we actually had something to fight them with.

As ever though, it's doing what it takes to win and we are far more adept than the Germans ever have been at getting powerful allies to fight our corner.

As for the Americans, all politics aside, a lot of American Mothers lost their sons in Europe and that's all that needs to be said.

Funny though how the English usually come out on the winning side, even when in the face of adversity, such as having a much bigger country on our doorstep that had prepared for war for a long time while we had demilitarised. Funny that. Is it luck or craft?

Just as with a fifth of your population we have relatively far more gold medals.

Funny how this small island always seems to succeed against the odds. 'Must be something in the water.

jlf1961 -> RE: Pound For Pound The Very Best (8/15/2016 1:27:13 PM)

Good points, and while England has remained unconquered since 1066 (gotta admire great great great great etc Grand dad for that,) I do seem to recall a certain British commander so embarrassed by losing to a bunch of colonial rabble he had a subordinate give his sword to the winning general.

Not to mention a bunch of colonials and uncivilized riff raff opened a can of whupass on some Brits near a town called New Orleans a few years later....

At the time you were considered to be not worth the bother, and so we sent a minor force across - as with the Germans in WW2 you weren't part of our objectives.

No hard feelings though, JLF, I have a picture of Andrew Jackson on a horse in my front room.

This whole 'war of independence' and '1812' is a big thing for you, but no one here knows much about it, so it probably tells you that getting a draw against the English is a big thing for the Americans but it doesn't register here.

'Suppose when you've produced so much, as England has, we can't begrudge anyone their 'victories': however small and unimportant.

needlesandpins -> RE: Pound For Pound The Very Best (8/15/2016 3:10:17 PM)

Another thing to consider about our sporting victories, aside from football/soccer, at which generally we are crap, but pay the players a shit load of money, our highest achievers win like they do whilst getting next to nothing. There are no in school scholarships here like the Americans have, virtually no grants, some lottery funding if you are lucky, but mostly it's all done off our own backs. Not only that but we are also really self destructive. We breed amazing horses, for instance our dressage horses, they win medals for us, and then the dozy owners put them up for sale, because ya know, our riders can compete without the fricking horse they just spent years making for you. Seriously, I'm damn sure that if you could sell off our athletes someone would do it!

What our sports people do really is impressive.

How about the most important part?

Since the doping scandal within the Russian sports world, they are not on top of the medal count for once?

Kinda seems to me (last time I studied math) that 26 is more than 16.

I've never been a huge fan of a business person saying...."well.....you do 7 times our volume so....OF COURSE you're going to make more money!!!!"

I have a (friendly) competitor (locally) who does 8 times our volume.....we do 1/2 his (total) ACTUAL profits.

So....I'm thinking....you were whining about what exactly....??????

That your country did less than the U.S. or......that your country just didn't step the fuck up?

Flawless.

And while I'll agree, there have been (since WW2) far too many Americans standing on that "look what the fuck we did for you" crap (when it was actually their grandparents....not them)....that was 70 years ago....America has gotten fat and accustomed to its position....that's wrong by EVERY measure and....I'll even agree that we (the U.S.) haven't done enough since 9/11.....BUT......the REST of the world needs to step the FUCK up because without the U.S. (paying for 87% of the U.N. budget......78% of NATO) we're JUST around the corner from saying...."ooooooooopppp.....sorry.....we have some roads and bridges to repair....none of which......are.....hmmmmm.....YOURS"

And while all you fucking whiners.....whine.....about how awful the U.S. is....realize THIS; 64% of the World's police force is paid for by...none other than....

Now...we can argue a shitload of stuff.

Is the U.S, an integrity filled government...with truly altruistic means to an end in mind?

Ehhhhhh.....not terribly likely.

Now....while you consider that thought.....please (without including Norway, Denmark or Sweden....none of which provide anything as to world peace other than saying....."well....we just don't think that's really our gig").....identify for me....just 5.....5 will do just nicely....please name them.....who are....policing and protecting YOUR country?

So....yeah...the U.S. sucks at a lot of things...we have black ops (so do 99% of the 1st world governments), they steal from their parishioners (taxpayers)......(so do 99% of GOVERMENTS).......they lie (to EVERYONE)..........(so do 99%of ALLLLLLLLL governments)....and in the end...

It sucks to be the world's Daddy but you know what? Someone has to....because otherwise....all the kiddies would run rampant.

Wanna see the world go to TOTAL shit?

WATCH the world as it decays while we (the collective U.S. are about to) say...."fuck ALL of you....no more checks.....fuck you and the horse you rode in on....have fun beating yourselves up".

needlesandpins -> RE: Pound For Pound The Very Best (8/17/2016 11:05:02 AM)

OMFG, seriously? We take a little credit that our athletes, for whom we have far less than you for our country size compared to yours, that compete purely on their own merits whilst working full time jobs most of the time because there is sod all funding here the way you lot get, and you say that WE are the ones whining when you post all that clap trap? Our athletes do 'step the fuck up' as opposed to the relative grease sliding that you lot get to do on scholarships, grants, and funding

Are you bloody kidding me? You can't let us have a little glory without bringing up WW2, which you stepped in at the end after pissing your pants for ages and refusing to enter, have taken credit for ever since, have twisted facts in god knows how many films to glorify America even when you weren't even fucking there!

Now you want to take credit for everything else we have too? Well please, at least get your facts straight. You see the USA does NOT pay out 78% of the NATO budget. My 7 year old Granddaughter can work this one out, man you should be ashamed of yourself! You lot may pay more than the 27 other countries, but then you are far larger than everyone else too, so on a percentage we all pay our relative share. The budget is split in to three sections, and in total you still a whopping 22%. Taking the 2014-15 budget, and making the really silly first grade mistake of adding three percentages together it still wouldn't have made 78%

Now for the UN, at one time the US paid 25%, but now it pays 22%, because again everything is worked out on a country value percentage. So I have no idea where the hell you plucked your figures from, but seriously, get a grip on that.

As for our police force, you pay fuck all towards it. The largest proportion of our budget comes from our council taxes, and we are about to be privatized. Now even if we worked of the figures from the UN, and from NATO, considering that your over all expenditure is 44%, you're still talking bollocks.

Policing and protecting our country ... Uuummmm we keep getting dragging in to illegal wars by the US for fuck all reason other than to line the pockets of the rich in both our countries. The US does naff all for the UK except charge us for Trident that we can't even fricking use, and that none of us except our leaching Government want. Most of us would be more than happy for the US to fuck right off with it's wars on other countries, and to leave us out of it, because actually we are well aware of the fact that when it comes right down to it the US is only concerned for itself.

However, what the hell ANY of this has to do with us claiming a little credit for our athletes I don't know, but the fact that it's got your panties in such a twist that you have to pull this crap, and then claim that any of us are the whiners is amazing.

Haha!

But aren't you even an itsy bitsy embarrassed about your national soccer team? When was the last time they dominated at world class level? (PS: We call it football here too, but for the benefits of Americans, where football means a different sport, I'm just gonna go with soccer.)

jlf1961 -> RE: Pound For Pound The Very Best (8/17/2016 11:26:04 AM)

Needles, I was commenting on the "Put them on the fuckin' moon or somewhere equally unimportant because they're contaminating our excellence." statement.

As for stepping in at the "end" of ww2, well considering it lasted another 4 years after we got involved, add to the fact that the US did have the biggest part of the burden of dealing with the Japanese in the Pacific (yes, the brits and anzacs did have a large part of the CBI theater) and consider that even before we declared war, we were already putting US lives on the line escorting convoys in the North Atlantic to suppliment the fact that the RN and RCN was getting their asses handed to them due to the overwhelming number of uboats the germans were sending out, trying to make it like the UK and its empire was winning the war is pretty much BULLSHIT.

At best, the UK could have lasted maybe another year, possibly two, and the simple reason is that the supply lines to the UK stretched across the Atlantic and that was a German controlled pond.

As for your athletes, by all means, celebrate their achievements, however, you are operating under the delusion that the athletes we have are state supported.

The US government contributes practically nothing to the Olympic effort, as for scholarships and grants, hate to bust your bubble, but with the exception of basketball, all sports colleges give scholarships for are not Olympic sports.

Grants are not awarded based on athletic ability, but on academic ability.

And it was not until recent years, that the US even allowed professional athletes to be eligible for the Olympic team, which was not the same in every other country on the planet.

Finally, thanks to numerous scandals at the bigger schools, students on athletic scholarships actually have to study a legitimate course and major.

As for the rest of the claims by one of our resident socks, leave it alone.

I believe I'm quoted above as stating that those that (currently....as in....THIS generation) claim WW2 as their reason to argue for permanent glory are not only arguably fallible but, more over, representing others efforts.....not their own....further that....any claim to superiority in any fashion is GROSSLY inaccurate.

I don't think I was unclear.....in even the remotest sense.

I read someplace that Dowding and Churchill believed that if Goering had concentrated on the RAF and airfields for another week, the Battle of Britain would have had a totally different ending and if THAT had happened, invasion was Hitler's next step. Looking at the speed with which the Wehrmacht went through Holland, Belgium and France, Britain probably wouldn't have posed them any great problems.
The Americans helped Britain from the very beginning with war materiel and shortly after that with convoy patrols and even Canadian troops with VERY strange accents *smile*. Yes, they came into the war late as far as manpower goes but without their help from the very beginning, Britain would have sunk under the weight of German occupation troops I think.
