A recent study supports the view that fat-shaming does not, in fact, work:

One trip to samoa could have shown that.

The "those jokes are even older than I am, and were probably already getting on a bit when Bernard Manning first started using them, so who give a fuck?" option seems to be missing from that poll.

Well, you know how it works. Even I crack jokes about the sort of scientific research that painstakingly demonstrates that, e.g., the Pope is indeed a Catholic. But sometimes a bit of 'common knowledge' is so widely believed - despite it smacking of utter horseshit - that we need proper empirical evidence for the knowledge that said belief is horseshit. This is especially true when we're talking of a given piece of propaganda that's beloved of large numbers of people. Into that category falls a lot of the stuff that allows people who want to be shitty to claim that they're 'actually doing the good and kind thing' to the people they're being shitty to.

Ah yes, Bernard Manning. Hated 'political correctness' - and didn't mind 'fat jokes', despite the fact that he himself was fat. I do think, however, that the fact that, as a professional comedian, he got paid very handsomely for being a figure of fun made a difference in his case.

I was thinking more of how bloody ancient the jokes on the hoardings are than anything else, to be honest.

Fair enough. Private Eye used to run a regular column called 'Ads Nauseam' about advertising campaigns that had ripped off old jokes. If the advertisers had any real creativity, they'd not have been working in advertising in the first place, was the general feeling.

Sounds about right. I recall the late Bill Hicks having some harsh words about that as well.

Interesting. Have to try something else then.

Doesn't that depend on the purpose of fat-shaming?

Is it actually about affecting the behavior of the overweight person(s) or, as I rather suspect, boosting a sense of superiority (perhaps otherwise unattainable) in the person doing the shaming?

Greta, fat people should be shamed, their personal eating habits cost me money.

A whole new reason to enjoy ice cream. Thanks! [:)]

My pleasure. If you haven't tried a flavor called "Secret Breakfast," you really should.

You're too kind, DC. It's *always* about boosting a sense of superiority. And it's nearly always done by the sort of arse who doesn't realise he's in a glass house throwing stones.

Just shame them for being American, SD. Can't go far wrong there. [;)]

Absolutely. I used to be an ardent defender of my fellow countrymen, then they made Kim Kardashian and Donald Trump rich, and put Jenner on the cover of SI as athlete of the year. I'm done. [;)]
