Thanks for starting this thread.
Odd, that it took so long for someone to start it, considering the devastation going on down there.
How incredibly sad, will chime in later.

I actually liked the story about the "creole navy," I think was the term. I will have to find it again.

Houston has had not just 1 but 2 once-in-500 year floods and a few "mini" floods in the past year.. not quite as bad as BR but still freakin' bad.. freeways turned into rivers, several people have died.. I have never lived in a city that had this kinda weather.. Its horrible.. its either flash flooding or its hot & humid and feels like 100+ degrees.. FL is no picnic either.. same shite.. sorta makes the mid-west actually look appealing..

It had been mentioned in a post that Oside Girl made about the fires in California, the topic died over on off the grid.

I'm aware of the resent floods in your area, I'm not to far down the road from there. They also open the dams at the lakes north of here
that caused flooding here and places south of the dam, not as bad as Baton Rouge. Although when hurricane ike come through it did cause
extensive damage here due to the floods. I had 3 feet of water in my house, ended up having to gut the house replaced pluming, electrical most everything. Just wasn't total rebuild from the ground up but close enough.

More importantly, Is the unity I see when these events happen, I only wish it was the same with the other resent issues there and in this
in this country as a whole instead the destructive diversity we see, hear and read about.

What has happened in Louisana has been heartbreaking.
So many victims need an extended place to stay, or lack the means to repair homes.
Many are staying in shelters, and apparently they don't want to do the FEMA travel trailers, like they did after Katrina.

After reading several sources, many are complaining about the lack of temporary housing.

Aren't there any buses that could take people and put them up in hotels, until they sort out the long term temporary housing needs?

WSJ states 4,000 people still in shelters 2 hours ago.
Any guesses as to how long many of these people will have to stay in shelters?
LA Times -Flooding leaves thousands looking for housing

Articles like this anger me, we always seem to have problems providing for OUR citizens.
People returning to the shelter, after running out of money for hotels?
You mean we can't afford to put these people in hotels, and gasp, pay for it???
WTF?
I'm so done... Just done.

After reading further, FEMA will put flood victims up in a hotel on a 30 day rolling basis.
Hummm, 30 days is not long for this amount of devastation.

Flood victims need to be staying in a shelter, hotel, car or work to qualify.

If you have been displaced but are staying with friends or family you are not eligible for TSA.

Here is the story:

http://thehayride.com/2016/08/meet-the-heroes-of-the-cajun-navy-who-are-saving-many-lives-as-louisiana-floods/#ixzz4HekIgb3y

quote:

Here’s another example of Louisianians helping their neighbors that we have seen this weekend. Louisiana is called the “Sportsman’s Paradise” because we love our hunting and fishing here.

Many of us have flat-bottom boats which are perfect for shallow bayous. They’re also good for flooded streets.

When a major flood hits the state, this “Cajun Navy” assembles to rescue their neighbors who are trapped in flooded homes and rooftops.

From The Times-Picayune:

As thousands were stranded inside their homes as Louisiana floodwaters rose this weekend, social media users shared photos and thanks for the “Cajun Navy.” The term was affectionately applied to the many fishermen, hunters and leisure boaters who arrived to provide back up to official first responders backed up with emergency calls for stranded residents.

The “Cajun Navy” faced no less strenuous work, according to one such volunteer. Chris Macaluso, a Baton Rouge resident, used his own boat to help get neighbors to dry ground from his own subdivision.

“I had access to a boat I could use but, man, they got a lot of (people) in duck hunting boats riding around these neighborhoods who have no idea where they’re going, but they’re just here to help,” Macaluso said. “This is not easy work.”

Riding a boat around in flooded streets is not easy work. There is often a strong current whipping around flooded cars and houses. There are also many obstacles that can damage boats.

There has also been a lot of neighbor helping neighbor, from what I have read.

It's great that neighbors are helping neighbors.
People should do whatever they can to help each other.

Many of those that are in shelters or are homeless,
are not faring as well.

I should not have de-railed the neighbors helping neighbors thread.

My bad
Might start that thread later

Aylee, That was my point the community pulling together to help each other, this happens in times of natural disasters. On the other hand when the issue is police shooting blacks there are protest that lead to riots, burning business in the community, looting etc. shooting police in retaliation. Then it's just destructive diversity, blaming it's one race or the other or it's police that were wrong or vice versa.

When this happens it's on the 24/7 national news, newspapers, interweb and all other media, yet it rarely if ever
makes the news if the police shoot a white person or beat them, there are no protest, riots or anything.
Is this by design to keep us divided for fear we will come together as a people?

I believe most are good hard working people trying to do the best they can for themselves and their family, so it's
a small minority that are angry, discontent, frustrated or what every their problems are that bring these things about. Is there a way to address this or solve somehow? Or are we just going to implode?

The same could be said for people who live in the Ca earthquake zone, tornado alley, along the Mississippi, or Chicago.

Do you think the klan and the mafia should also be there?

Who is they?
Did I say they should be there?
Do you mean BLM and the black panthers?
That profess black lives matter and all lives matter?
Why should they not be there?
Why are they not there making a contribution?
Would that not prove they really mean and care that all lives matter?
Did I say the klan and mafia should or should not be there?
Do you think the klan and mafia should be there?
Do the klan and mafia profess all lives matter?
Why should the klan and mafia not be there?
Do you know the klan or mafia wasn't there?
When was the last time you even remotely heard of the klan and mafia
saying or doing anything about or to black lives?
Why do fucktarts always throw the klan and mafia into the mix?
Why don't you try making a contribution to a discussion for once in your life, instead of providing only short snide remarks?

Good attempt at trying to control "thread drift".
I have learned that no matter how many times you type something on here, many will twist what you have said, or bring arguments to your thread, that are already going on already on most of the other threads.
It's the price you pay for coming here, you may eventually become selective to what you read and respond to.
As a person of color, I've learned to stay away from many threads on here.
IF I jump in, I will post once or twice and not look back.
I have ADHD so it's real easy for me to ignore/not read most of the nonsense on here.
You must protect your own mental health here, to enjoy your message board experiences.
