Just to get back to the topic after 21 pages...
i have often considered how it is the context and intent, rather than the actions themselves, that matter most. Here, the quote is addressing what one does with one's ego. A slave may be obsequious in order to attain the pleasure of a compliment, for instance, about his/her service. It may be a manipulative act, which in essence renders the Dominant submissive to slave's will. In that way, the slave may feel exalted in ego.
However, a true humbling involves putting one's ego aside and serving for the sake of the Dominant. It is important for the slave his/herself to examine motives and to weed out the exaltation of the personal ego in favor of exaltation of the Dominant. For a slave, to abase oneself is exalting when it is done purely for the Dominant partner, and it is that work for which the slave is accountable.
