Better to seperate them. Morale and desires have no place in medicine. Medicine is and should be nothing but cold hearted.

Aylee -> RE: Another Socialized Medicine/Health Success (8/26/2016 7:04:23 PM)

I am not positive the outcome would have been better in the US. I think we have our own stories like this.

That goal's certainly been met in terms of EpiPen pricing. [8|]

So far as I can tell from the BBC link, no one chose to separate them. As I know firsthand, finding an open bed in a medical facility can be a huge challenge.

Agreed.

no doubt we have our problems to, but I posted this for sake of continued discussion about the merits of socialized medicine, its impact upon people, and how much better their system is than ours. Therefore we must dismantle our system completly, federalize all medicine inclduing doctors, nurses, etc immediately. The the non-nmedical personnel in the government can decide (does it matter whose) can make all the decisions including prices, co-pays, etc. And it puts government in firm control of what I have heard is an estimated 10% of our economy.

You think? Last week, I nearly missed a cancer treatment because my insurance company--private, nongovernmental--had mistakenly cancelled my employer's plan. I learned this 30 minutes before I was due at the hospital.

Another way of putting it is that you exploited this couple's heartbreak as an excuse to generalize and whine about "socialized medicine."

Stay classy, dude.

Really? Then why don't you post something that has something to do with socialized medicine?

Actually health care in the US accounts for nearly 20% of our GDP.....sad.....

WTF are you on about?

In countries with socialized medicine this happens at the extreme end of it. In the US this would be near standard procedure, as DICTATED by the -private sector- who has stolen tens of thousands of dollars from you for decades prior.

Any and all socialized healthcare countries I'm aware of, they still have doctors you can go to or assisted living homes you can go to, wherever you want, whenever you want, no waiting ....

IF you got the money.

In the US, it's IF you got the money, just to get in the door in the first place.

And paying 50% higher than the next nearest country for just that.

Do you actually want to make the US better, or are you happy just whining your miserable ass away about fairy tales you actively seek out to fill your stupid head with?

That is really a great line because it can be applied to so many, many posts in this P & R forum.

I live under US Govt run socialized medicine. I can't get the devices I need for daily life. I have to pay for them out of pocket. Hospital Bed with accessories to the shower bench. Walker, wheelchair lift and so on. I have lived this way since I was 17. I get treatments that they determine are authorized. I was stuck with a quarter million dollar bill because they retroactively disapproved payment. Then said oh, we made a mistake but to bad for you, you still gotta pay. I have been trying since 1987 to get just one single appointment and am still waiting even tho I have applied numerous times over the years. Tell me how good socialized medicine is. And I get to pay taxes for my medical devices to boot. There is no upside as far as I am concerned.

This isn't a failure of socialized medicine just because it happened in a country with socialized medicine. This isn't a failure of the medical system. This is a fucked up situation that has more to do with coincidence than anything. She's in an assisted living facility that doesn't have room for him.

Should they have been placed together? Probably.

Would their insurance pay for a 'double occupancy' when there was only a single occupant? I don't know, but I'd be willing to bet it's more likely in a socialized system than in the US.

If the US is ever going to move to a socialized system, government will have to federalize pretty much everything. After that, it's more likely that cost inflation can be better limited.

You make a good if not actually coherent case that the particular form of socialized healthcare you've experienced in the US hasn't worked well for you.

What you seem to insist on overlooking is the fact that in at least 20 other countries, none of that would have happened in the first place -because they have a bona fide universal healthcare system-, especially not the part about retroactively being stuck with a huge bill for treatment or for whatever medical aids.

But here's a hint; if you were stuck with a quarter million dollar doctor/hospital bill, it's not actually socialized healthcare in any sense of the term.

It is precisely because the US doesn't have a universal healthcare system that all that happened to you. That would never happen in Britain or Sweden or the Netherlands, etc.

My cousin who died from ALS five years ago had to get a wheelchair, buy a van with a lift (that her cousins drove) to haul her to the doctor, a specialized laptop computer with specialized glasses so she could type by eye movement, etc. because she was a CPA with an MBA working at a company that had a decent health plan that she still paid heavily into out of her pay check. And she got all that education because her Phd dad could afford it without leaving her in student debt for 10 years after graduation.

If you aren't born to good circumstances or you don't have the mind for the university or are not born with entrepreneurial mindset and skills and then something bad happens to you, the US is just another "sucks to be you" third world country.

You never explained how you came into this "US socialized medicine" plan that no normal person is entitled to in the first place. Are you a vet? If so, you'll want to know that after invading Afghanistan and Iraq, Bush II pushed through a bill to cut funding to the VA as a perverted and twisted token of his appreciation to those who served, so that might have something to do with it.

In your dreams. You are a militry retireree.

I do not have that problem. They give me everything I tell them I want.

I have to pay for them out of pocket.

Mine are free.

Hospital Bed with accessories to the shower bench. Walker, wheelchair lift and so on.

Obviously you have pissed someone off. I was temporarily non ambulatory and they gave me a "quickie"...I had thought it was a loaner and when I tried to give it back when I no longer needed it they said it was mine.

Why do you think your military medicine is "socialized? It ain't it is what you have told us you set out to do when you joined up at 17 because you knew of your family history of diabetes. You have bragged to us how you conned them.

Not so sure I agree with you, DS. I had an aunt and uncle that spent the better part of 10 years living together in a very nice retirement/long-term care facility that they picked for themselves. She was a housewife that had suffered from crippling RA most of her adult life. He was a former high school math and physics teacher that eventually developed Alzheimer's. I can't say I know exactly how it was all paid for but I do know they weren't any more wealthy than the average middle-class family of their time. I imagine it was paid by a combination of retirement savings and insurance. Would they have been able to maintain that level of choice and care for that long with a socialized system? Maybe so, maybe not.

I need to throw my 2 cents into this socialized medicine thing if folks don't mind... I am Canadian... 3 years ago I was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure. Dialysis, procedures for installing devices for 2 different types of dialysis, treatments, both hemo and peritoneal dialysis, testing and eventually a transplant. I know dialysis treatments in a centre are about 800 dollars a session, I was doing them 3 days a week for about 6 months. My peritoneal dialysis machine was 21k plus all the supplies for 14 months. I can't even fathom that one. The transplant work up, the surgery, a week stay in a critical unit, and all of the extra hospital stays due to complications. I walked out of the hospital each of the 3 times not owing anything.

Don't know why one of the richest counties on the planet can't do this for their own people without people bitching about it

Yes he has, he is retired military. That is how he fell into their clutchs at 17.
