Has anyone ever been able to completely define cruel and unusual punishment? I know at one point in our history people would be tarred and feathered and it was acceptable. Now it's not. There is a huge part of the world where they stone rape victums. I think that is like backwards but it isn't considered cruel and unusual there.

I'd imagine the OP was banging on about injuring spines to paralyse people because there was a big fuss about somebody demanding that as a punishment for some kid who'd crippled her son in a knife attack a few years back? (I'm not sure, but I think the accusers were finally paid off instead.)

Given that this site is full of sadists, Im sure there are a million cruel and unusual punishments that could be offered up.
most of them against the law, and against TOS...

I'm sure. Bit annoyed it took me so long to realise she was probably blathering about an application of the eye for an eye thing that was so meanspirited that not even the Saudis would go for it, though...

Leaving the obvious immorality aside for a moment - do you really think this would act as a deterrent in a given society as a whole? I mean, one quick way to make me jump from vaguely, and lazily, anti-government to all-out terrorist might be to hear that one of my friends or relatives had been tortured by said government. I can't imagine anything that would be more likely to induce utter, outright rage in me, in fact.

well the dumb arsed severing of the spinal cord wasnt thought thru at all.
WHy not just kill em.
Its cheaper.
If you are gonna sever a spinal cord, and expect them to live , to suffer the consequences of their actions, its gonna cost brazillions to keep them alive to even suppose there would be a second offense.
Cruel and unusual is one thing, malicious, vindictive and vengeance is another

I don’t thank your post is that outlandish…We have an African American congressmen here in st louis that proposed a whole series of punishments for minor offenders that would replace or limit jail time. I liked his ideas but they did not go over to good with his constituents and cost him his office.
The one that caused all the trouble was a public switching on a naked butt. Offenders would be forced to drop their pants in a public forum and would be switched by anyone who wanted to step up and punish them. He got the idea from the boy who spit on the sidewalk I believe in Singapore and was switched.

Many in the system, academia, and policy makers believe that solitary is cruel and unusual punishment. If it is for long enough, I do too.

Some points to consider:

This kid was the son of a US embassy employee who cited diplomatic immunity and made sanction threats against Singapore, so this wasn't just some kid off the street.

He WAS caned, which was an official sentence. The number of strokes was reduced after serious back and forth with the embassy, but they did not back down on the sentence. BTW, the canings were not public events. You have to get special permission or be on duty to be there.

He was detained in Singapore juvie for 2 years during the course of the sentence. The strikes are divided up to be administered over a period of time.

It was not his first offence in Singapore. He had previously been caught defacing government property which is serious in conservative Singapore and was on probation.

He then went on to write a book about the whole experience which was quite sensationalized and not completely to-the-facts. But it wasn't like Singapore could do anything about that except list his book under "fiction" in Singapore.
