Status: offline 		I had a long conversation with my son yesterday about Gary Johnson's chances for being elected President. He brought up some interesting thoughts. With 10% of the popular vote in the polls, he thought that Johnson had a good shot at the job. His logic was that if he could keep enough votes from Clinton/Trump that he has the possibility of creating a less than majority vote in the Electoral College and turn the election over to Congress to decide. With the split in Congress, he felt that Johnson might be elected that way.

He also indicated that Johnson might even carry a couple states (he said but I forgot which ones).

I think the possibility exists, but with a low probability.

I think I said this on another thread, but maybe I didn't:

That clip of Johnson striking out on Aleppo not only cost him any chance at an election, but it set back the effort to legalize recreational marijuana use by 20 - 50 years. He looked like an idiot stoner whose only concern was the demise of Twinkie©s.

Status: offline 		I think the Aleppo flub helped him. He made national news, and my local station is now showing his photo and poll numbers along with Clinton and Trump. They weren't doing that last week. By the way, he answered the question a few seconds later.

In this election, I dont think it has a snowballs chance in hell, but thats just me.
The two party system should have been knocked out of the park decades ago.
Both he and Jill may well be voted for, in record numbers, but its still a choice between the two worst candidates, in fifty years.

Hot4bondage, we dont agree often and im disagreeing with you, but not much.....While I think it hurt him bad, he looked dumbfounded, fairly or not, it was just a flub but DID make him look out of it.
I am not suggesting that its fair, but it did look bad. Normally Im quick to enjoy politicians screwing up, but this was uncomfortable and embarrassing to me, and I just felt sorry for him....
"57 states" was embarrassing
"47%" was stupid.
Palin was just pathetic, in any speech/interview.
Hils flubs so much and embarrassingly
Johnson I felt bad for and that isnt something interests me politically, and while I support MJ decriminalization, yeah he isnt the guy for the job.
Any publicity tho IS good publicity, he may enjoy a bounce, and it would be interesting to see if he can get into a debate, but is it too late in the day?

Twinkies live on but if not for laying off 18,000 employees and the bankrupting the company by management stealing the retirement money. Twinkie-maker Hostess continues to screw over its workers. The company is in the process of complete liquidation and 18,000 unionized workers are set to lose their jobs. More troubling, they could lose their pensions.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Hostess’ CEO, Gregory Rayburn, essentially admitted that his company stole employee pension money and put it toward CEO and senior executive pay (aka “operations”). While this isn't technically illegal,(of course that's not illegal, it's called capitalism) it's another sleazy theft by Hostess executives who've paid themselves handsomely while running their company into the ground. Just last month, a judge agreed to let Hostess executives suck another $1.8 million out of the bankrupt company to pay bonuses to CEOs.

If there's no way to recover the money for the Hostess pension plans for workers, then the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. will have to foot the bill to make sure workers get at least some of the retirement money they paid in.

Meanwhile more capitalism:

Two years after Apollo Global Management LLC and Metropoulos & Co. acquired the maker of Twinkies from liquidation, Hostess is selling $1.23 billion of term loans. Of that, $905 million will be used to pay a dividend to its shareholders, according to Standard & Poor’s. That’s more than double what they paid for the business.

For Hostess, the deal will triple debt levels to about six times a measure of earnings, according to an S&P report this month.

“Dividends aren't designed to create value for the company,” Moody’s Investors Service analyst Brian Weddington said by phone. “This is a return of capital and profits to the founding investors.” They really mean bottom fishing investors. Hostess was founded in 1919.

The move represents a windfall for Metropoulos and Apollo. Based on FORBES’ calculations, Metropoulos stands to reap $700 million (before taxes) in returns on his initial $40 million investment. (The rest of the original $410 million purchase price was financed by a $140 million equity investment from Apollo; the remaining $230 million was debt.) FORBES has already accounted for most of the gain in Metropoulos’ fortune, putting his net worth at $2.4 billion in March this year. Selling a stake to Gores Group could add another $100 million to Metropoulos’ fortune.

Well the plutocracy doesn't pay for laws to prevent leveraging the co. into bankruptcy and stealing the pensions, it pays to allow it. Fixing that is a hill to high to climb for any pres. Fuck the employees and the rest of society put at risk by the same financial opportunities.

Yeah I think we're barely disagreeing again. It was a bad flub for sure, and I would hate to see that deer-in-the-headlights look on any president's face. On the other hand, he seems honest, he has experience, and he's on all 50 ballots. If he had just a sliver of Hill and Don's media saturation, I'm certain he would've hit the 15% threshold for the debates by now.

When is the deadline to qualify for the first debate? Anybody know?
