I think most of it is superficial. Unlike you, I actually thought #8 made more sense than the rest of it.

Here's a question not addressed in that list - How many people who are able to effectively use lateral thinking are also particularly pious or heavily political?? From those I've met, very very few.

I don't believe they are on the whole superficial. They make a lot of sense to me and the proof is all around us. I do think the mistake is in not saying learned as opposed to potential intelligence. I do believe it takes a family to raise an intelligent child. The more learned the family the more the child's potential intelligence will be attained. Other attributes that enhance confidence for instance also help individuals to maximize their intelligence. I believe what this article points out are much more important than raw IQ. Butch

All the others yes mostly, altho I am a liberal and agnostic, I am more curious than anything. I research a lot of stuff, not just politics, and religion, or bdsm, but i cannot be bored with an internet connection. Or books. Im an introverted extrovert. I like my own company more than I do groups of people. I treasure my alone time, but then I will go through periods of intense extrovert pleasure, where I can be the life of the party. My entire working life has been spent around the public. Except for now, while I deal with people daily, it is not face to face very often. Cheers Butch

I believe what this article points out are much more important than raw IQ. Butch Trouble is, that doesn't always fit in the real world. One of my sons is as thick as 2 broken bricks. Yet everyone else in the family is well educated and articulate. Now, at 21, he still can't do really basic maths. And by basic, I really mean rudimentary stuff. Got a dollar and spend 50 cents in the shop; how much change should you get?? He can't work that out without a calculator. He can't even add 2 + 2 without counting on his fingers. Yet he's quite outgoing and a gregarious type of person. And his English is worse than a two year old - can barely write his name legibly. But, he's not illerate or suffers from any mental disorder. Just thick as 2 short planks. I still think a lot of these so-called results are either selective data or can be interpreted as you like. I have frequently found that those who are sheeple, shallow, or not able to think independantly and out of the box tend to be politicians or pious people. I think this is one of those "meh!" sort of studies; neither true nor false.

Myself, I rather like that it's connecting a sophisticated use of language and humour to intelligence, rather than just sticking to problem solving as the only scale to judge intellect by: if you work that way, Shakespeare, Joyce and Beckett were all pathetic failures, after all.

None of them were happy bunnies, and Joyce's insistence that Finnegans Wake was his best novel was a magnificent act of fuckwittery, but all three produced some remarkable, powerful and influential fiction. If you'e not having Elizabethans or modernists, how about the failed engraver William Blake or the novelist who should have struck to illustrating Mervyn Peake?

Influential fiction... maybe. But 'remarkable' and 'powerful'?? Meh! I start to read the very first word from the bard and I'm struggling to stay awake from the boredome of his prose. The only 'power' to me is instant sleep.

Having intelligence and benefitting from it are two very different things. Deciding intelligence and indicating or correlating with intelligence are likewise different.

Everything except 2, used to be very slim, and not exactly fat now, and 4, I'm only 5'6ish. I write with my right had as was forced to at school on my Mum's instructions (also a lefty), but I'm naturally left handed, and I sight left for shooting. There are several things about intelligence though; it doesn't always come with common sense, as one of my very close friends, a DR in Mechanical Engineering proves to me constantly. It can be trapped in a mind without the ability to show its truest heights on paper, thus frustrating for the mind it's trapped in. It can be socially awkward enough to be debilitating. And sometimes it's arrogant enough to be ugly. Needles

This lack of balance, or common sense, negates their intelligence and prohibits them from excelling. It seems to me that the true geniuses, of which there are few, have the unusual combination of a high IQ along with the illusively described… common sense. Just look at some of the people here on the boards. They are undeniably very intelligent yet lack judgment and fail to understand what is truly important and what is not.
