beagle916 -> Intellectual Discourse (9/23/2016 5:42:39 PM)

Does anyone else in the community love to discuss economics, science or business. I miss having someone to spark my mind and just have in depth discussions with. This may sound overly dense but kinky sex is not the end all be all at least to me lol.

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: Intellectual Discourse (9/23/2016 5:50:05 PM)

We have lots of interesting discussions that do not involve economics, science or business, or even kinky sex.

Take a look around. Dig around the various topics.

sloguy02246 -> RE: Intellectual Discourse (9/23/2016 6:01:56 PM)

On these forums, there are some who certainly do want to discuss ideas, events, and issues.

But there are others who come only to argue, and some of them will do so endlessly.
They are here neither for actual discussion nor to make a point. They don't want the end result to be a mutual understanding or a respectful disagreement. They are here only to win (at least in their mind) an argument, no matter the topic.

But please, start a thread on any topic that is of interest to you. I am sure there will be many who will respond openly and respectfully.
Just be prepared for the inevitable onslaught of the "keyboard Klingons" who will barge in and turn the discussion into a bar fight.

I have already started exploring I may have to remind myself from time to time my business and life do not pause just to ramble on the internet lol

NookieNotes -> RE: Intellectual Discourse (9/24/2016 3:54:23 AM)

Science and business are two favorites of mine. And philosophy/ethics/morality. Psychology is a good one, especially related to WIITWD and sex, love and romance.

Welcome! Feel free to jump in the deep end. *smiles*

Sadly, most of the discussions about economics or science are in the P&R Dungeon, and tend to be dominated by fantasists and "theorisers": who understand neither. Some of them don't even seem to understand the whacky notions that they're reciting parrot fashion...

needlesandpins -> RE: Intellectual Discourse (9/24/2016 4:57:39 AM)

I like discussion, and debate, even when it gets heated and passionate, about various topics. What I can't abide is petty people that have to resort to insults because they can't adequately defend their POV.

Bring on what you want to talk about.

WhoreMods -> RE: Intellectual Discourse (9/24/2016 5:33:56 AM)

Oh, don't get me wrong, I enjoy that myself, but I do find people who are trotting out some line that they heard somebody else use years ago and didn't quite comprehend as a rebuttal to people who do have a clue what they're talking about a bit irksome. (I've noticed that they do tend to resorts to insults a lot, often while complaining about other people's ad hominems. It tends to be the same people who are convinced that their arguments are so self evident that if anybody disagrees with them, then it must be the result of either an inflexible ideology that blocks out facts, or stupidity.)
I could name names, but you probably have a good idea which posters I'm talking about anyway...

Ha, usually the ones that scream 'I thought I had you on block', 'I took you off of block to give you a chance', 'back on block you go', or something along those lines after a diatribe of the same old, same old within a few breaths of you not bowing down to their nonsense.

It's one of the reasons I stay out of P&R, it's just not worth my limited energy. However, we do get the odd nugget out here every now and then to still sink the teeth in to [:D]

A few points to consider on the topic of 'intellectual discourse."

1) Anything that starts as 'intellectual discourse' on these boards usually end in exchanges of insults.
2) It is impossible to have an intellectual exchange with civilized people when you are a uncivilized barbarian from 'the colonies.' (although the great state of Texas was never a crown colony of Great Britain and never had any oath of allegiance to king George)\
3) It is impossible to have any kind of intellectual anything with people who drive on the WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD.

And those are just the top 3 reasons.

There are others involving cricket, the claim that Scotch is a British drink (if it was, it would be called Brit, or English Whiskey or something like Spotted dick.)

True, it was a colony of Spain.

OI! Shut it you. I'm drinking Sloe Vodka tonight that I kinda made myself ... in that I didn't distill the Vodka, but I did the rest of it ... instead of Scotch, which I'm happy to concede is Scottish, or Irish rather than British. However, We have Gin, and after a liter of that I have either been very happy, or very sad [:D]

Irish whiskey tastes nothing like Scotch, or anything British, and as far as gin is concerned, never liked the stuff.

As for sloe vodka, I actually prefer fast drinks, like fast cars, but not fast women (harder to catch for this old geezer critter.)

Until the Scots STFU whining like schoolgirls and actually leave the UK, then scotch is British. Them's the rules.

Actually no, it will remain "british" as long as they are part of the British Islands.

... British Isles, more commonly. (Don't worry, even I have to google this stuff occasionally. ;))

Agreed that the two taste nothing alike. I'm not a fan of Irish Whisky as a rule. Gin is something I have drank on rare occasions with extra dry vermouth in an effort to get drunk. It didn't work, regardless of the fact of how much was consumed, and other liquids that joined it. It must be 15 years since my last attempt. I admitted defeat, and that it was just a waste of money trying to do something that everyone else complained about the day after [:D]

Fast cars ... now we're talking [;)]

Actually, I think most of the pre-Roman population of the UK was driven into Wales.

I don't buy TDC's suggestion that mere geography makes a country that secedes from the act of union remain part of a nation, though. You might as well argue that Northern and Southern Ireland are still one country if you're taking that line. [;)]
