My bad: I missed that you were talking about the British Isles rather than Great Britain.

ResidentSadist -> RE: Intellectual Discourse (9/25/2016 10:19:48 AM)

Why look to discuss economics, science or business on kink sex forum in the first place? Shouldn't you join reddit?

Nonetheless, you aren't the only one here that feels that way which is why we are knee deep in those topics over in politics & religion or off the grid.

I was talking about Brits in particular, not to be confused with Welsh, Irish, Scots (all of whom have more in common with Americans simply because like Americans, they dont give a fuck)

WhoreMods -> RE: Intellectual Discourse (9/25/2016 10:54:37 AM)

So the Scots, Northern Irish and Welsh aren't British then.
Right.

Welsh are Welsh first before anything else (ask a bloody Welshman!)

Scots are Scots first, invaded by the English (who are actually a mix of normans, britons, saxons and jutes, not true english)

And Northern Ireland is an occupied territory from which the lousy brits chased an ancestor out of in 1765 (long story, suffice it to say it was he either leave or be hung for crimes against the crown, which lets face it, could have meant he spit on the sidewalk.)

At least, I have the decency not to group all the inhabitants of the British Isles into one group, unlike you folks who refer to everyone in the States as Yanks! Texans aint Yanks! Texans aint really Rebs for that matter, we are TEXANS first and the rest of it just because a bunch of jokers signed a freaking treaty.

In which case, you should stop describing the English as "Brits" as that's an umbrella term used to describe them, along with the Micks, Taffs and Jocks, and anybody else who lives in the British isles. If you're talking specifically about the English, not using a term that also also describes everybody else in Britain you're trying to trying to distcnce them from would be helpful, dig?

Well, there is a bit of a sticky wicket in that point, which may be related more with your point of view.

I have a good friend (a bit of a nutter though) from Edinburgh, who states a 'Brit' as anyone from York south, or more specifically, any of 'those bloody fools from south of the wall."

Now as to which wall he is referring to, I am not sure, since there is of course Hadrian's wall, but then then there is the Antonine Wall.

Now, the term 'Mick' usually applies to Irish, as I understand it.

And, if you refer to a Scotsman as a brit, you are likely to get punched, kicked, gouged and pummeled about the head and shoulders with whatever instrument of education is readily available, as they have a tendency to distinguish between "Brits" and "Scots."

And I find it funny that Richard Burton once remarked when some referred to his as a brit, "I am Welsh, not a Brit."

WhoreMods -> RE: Intellectual Discourse (9/26/2016 7:40:39 AM)

They can call themselves what they want, but a Brit is anybody who lives in Britain: in my experience, what really pisses the Scots off is being called English.

(The Hadrian's Wall comment is interesting, as a lot of it is quite a way south of the border with Scotland: the bits oop norf that didn't interest the Romans included a chunk of what's now Cumbria as they indulged their taste for straight lines straight rather than following the more erratic line of the marches between Scotland and civilisation that were established after the Normans had taken over. I think it veers quite a way north of the current border in places as well.)

Actually, the course of the wall was partly due to the Romans love of straight lines, but primarily it was set as the shortest possible route.

As for what really pisses off Scots, above all else, is to ask them why the guys were skirts, as experienced by one Geoffrey Schmidt, PFC, in 1982 when a company of US Army Rangers had the privilege of training with the SAS in Scotland.

To make a long story short, the Highland Regiment had some sort of special event, and they were all in full dress uniform at a Pub, and Schmidt, myself and a few other Americans and a number of SAS members happened to walk in.

Schmidt, opened his mouth, inserted his foot up to the shoulder when he (rather loudly) asked, "Why the hell are these guys wearing skirts?"

Now, while it is true that US Airborne Rangers live by the motto, never leave a man behind, and the unofficial 'we can beat anyone, anywhere, any time" we also know that there is no force on the planet that can deal with a bunch of Highlanders in full dress uniform who have been drinking (evidently, the SAS guys felt the same way.)

So as soon as he asked the inappropriate question, he found himself alone, while the rest of us made a very hasty tactical advance in the direction where the Scots weren't.

There is one question we never got an answer to.

How many of the Highlanders did it take to throw Schmidt out the door?

Seriously? Ok, so you are just messing with people and not genuinely looking to meet anyone or make contacts.
That's your thing, I get it now. No worries.

Same here. I'm history buff and love to read - right now, I'm on kick reading about religious groups like Mormonism and Scientology. I also like dissecting the psychology of cults.

WhoreMods -> RE: Intellectual Discourse (9/26/2016 1:08:47 PM)

Have you read either of the biographies of Jack Parsons? They both take a hatchet to his involvement with Hubbard, iirc.

I have not. I'll have to look them up.

I just finished Inside Scientology. It was an interesting read.

WhoreMods -> RE: Intellectual Discourse (9/26/2016 4:18:34 PM)

Unless I have them confused, Sex and Rockets concentrates more on Parsons as an occultist, while Strange Angel is more interested in him as a self taught and unqualified rocket scientist. Neither author is very impressed by Hubbard, but one takes his occult pretensions a lot more seriously than the other guy, who just thinks he was an obnoxious manipulative prick and a con man.
Is Bare Faced Messiah still out of print, or has somebody had the testicular fortitude to reprint that one since the '80s? It's more of a hatchet job on Hubbard than anything else, but it takes his cult to task as well.
