I was programming computers at age 12.

Which language?

Basic (several versions), 6502 Assembler, Fortran IV, some strange variant of Cobol.

If you are old enough to remember Manic Miner 49er, the sprites were designed using the package I wrote called "Creator" (pure Assembler).
It never made it to the retail shelves because I couldn't get the financial backing for it.

I took Fortran IV and Watfor and Watfiv and Basic and RPG and Cobol and Assembler and JCL and I forget what else. But not when I was 12. I hardly remember only the minimal bit now days. I got good grades mostly, but I eventually thought I was going to kill myself from boredom. Accounting was almost like 'abstract literature' (if there be such a title) in comparison.

But what I found most interesting in your post was this;

quote:

I knew the differences between equilateral/isosceles/obtuse/scalene triangles and square/oblong/rhomboid shapes.
I could read fluently at the age of 5.
I knew my tables off by heart as well.
I could tell the time (before the age of digital clocks) and also knew the 24hr maritime system.
I could do basic maths too - including long division on paper (no calculators in my day).
When I did start real school, I read the entire school library within 3 weeks.
I started calculus and other supposedly more 'advanced stuff' by the time I started 'big' school at 11.
I was programming computers at age 12.
I also learned how to read punched cards and paper tape without referring to books.
ETA: The first crazy number I learnt off by heart was Pi to 19 decimal places.

I had learnt more "stuff" by the time I was 8/9/10 than most kids these days know when they leave school at 16.

I don't see that as impressive.
That was the norm when I went to school.

That last especially, considering all that preceded it.

I would like to hear from other Britains here recounting their own experience with that norm.

Manic Miner and Miner 2049er were two different games, sport: Matthew Smith has admitted that his was a rip off of the earlier Atari 2600 game whenever he's been asked about that.
(As the Spectrum didn't use sprites, are you talking about the Commodore conversion of Smith's game, or something?)

It was the Commodore version my sprite editor was used for.
The original Miner 2049er got ported to the Atari too.

I never played it but I know my sprite editor was used for quite a few games on various platforms.
What I got out of it was a cartridge version of the Assembler I used which was much faster and offered more extension bits than the tape version.
Those were the days.

But we digress and off topic.

Heh I bought my hubby an commodore 64 machine code/ assembler cartridge just after I found out I was pregnant with my eldest(85), I spent most evenings with him entering machine code...and until we moved to Canada, he did a lot of programming. I still have all the stuff
He did sprites too, he did a math program for the kids when they were tiny.
Happy days

Wben I worked at Exxon, I designed the database for their safety reports, but my formulas were too cumbersome.
I sent them to my programmer friend. He laughed and said, "If I ever needed an insight into a woman's logic, it is right here!"
He reduced my coding from too embarrassingly long to a few lines.

Yes you are posting bullshit. Why don't you post the whole story?

We need to exert zero tolerance on them. And don't forget "This Is Are Story" where the teachers make a hundred grand a year.

Where do school teachers below the university level make 100k per year?
How much do you think someone with a ba and an ma should be paid?
School teachers historically have made the same wage as a truck driver.

I the old days the townspeople would build a schoolhouse and hire a teacher. Perhaps that is like a "pubic" school but they had control over it. They could fire the teacher and get a new one. Now you can't fire them.

You are as full of shit as a christmas goose. School teachers get fired all the time dumbass. Stop making shit up.

And I think people without kids in school should not have to pay for it.

People without kids paid for the school you went to.

School teachers in chicago make $35.50 per hour or $71,000 a year.
Starting pay is about $40,000.
I got my license when a cdl was called a class 1. That would have been 1969. All one really needs to know is to keep the rubber side down and the rig in between the mirrors. if you can do that with the hammer down and believable book you will get your paycheck on thursday... to be a school teacher is somewhat more involved.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/cleared-charges-honor-student-space-camp/story?id=19236561

here, lets do a little more "Thompson look in the mirror" work:

termy says "their policies are ridiculous. they charged..." which might lead one to confuse the "their" and the "they" as being the same entities. its bad writing. however, since the "they" is followed by "charged with a felony..." he can only be referring to law enforcement acting consistent with school policy. so, your saying "it was not the school" is meaningless. no duh it was not the school. school's don't charge people with felonies.

that said, the quote from your reference has nothing whatsoever to do with contradicting termy's claim that she was charged with a felony. it has to do with the same state attorney NOT charging someone else who committed, seemingly, a worse crime, because it was an accident.

those two small things out of the way---now, the principal did indeed "vouch for her character," however, it was the vice principal who turned her in in the first place (ohh, got that one wrong too!)

quote:

The disturbance prompted Assistant Principal Dan Durham to alert authorities

she was nevertheless suspended, termy's citation quotes the school system [so someone OTHER than the principal and vice principal---got that??] standing by their decision, and from YOUR reference (you know, the WHOLE STORY you left out [any of that language sounding familiar??]):

quote:

Indeed, Wilmot would be arrested at the school and charged with the aforementioned charges. Then to add insult to injury, the teen was reportedly expelled from Bartow High; she is currently completing her education through an “expulsion program.”

and

quote:

“However, she was arrested and charged with adult felonies, which means the arrest will follow her for the remainder of her life. According to Haas [the chief assistant state attorney], they are still determining whether to go forward in Kiera’s case or drop the charges as they did in the Richardson case.

put another way, "being cleared of charges" doesn't negate the fact she was charged in the first place.

the short of it all being---the citations you thought was defending your position of calling termy's position "bullshit" actually corroborates what he was saying. oooooh, that's gotta smart.

as for this gem of yours, i'll let the visible irony do its own work:

quote:

Perhapos you should consider putting your brian in gear before opening your mouth at wot.

this one makes me laugh. do you realize within the same paragraph you say "tenure is only for college level teachers" and "tenure below the university level"---thereby disqualifying your first statement by your second?

do you realize your Wikipedia site has in its very title a line (and in its body) that contradicts your "tenure is only for college teachers" when it says "criticisms of tenure for school teachers?"

do you realize your "Vergara v. California" has to do with tenure (the one you said only exists at colleges) in public school education (you know, where you say it doesn't exist)?

and that case does not "discuss the difference in tenure between the university level and below the university level"---it simply examines from a legal perspective the shortcomings of tenure at the latter level.

you are really bad at this aren't you?

should I keep going on any of the rest of your "stupid shit" or is 0 for 3 enough for you right now?? the difficulty in firing a teacher as opposed to "teachers get fired all the time" would be like shooting fish in a barrel.

the next time you want to call someone "phoquing stupid" or "ignorant" or any of its variations or insult someone's intelligence, I hope instead you'll reflect on your performance exhibited in these last three posts.

Actually he said, "100k a year is a chicago teacher, is a chicago cop." So maybe he's got two specific people in mind, who inherited a ton of cash. But that's not the wage of a Chicago teacher.
