ORIGINAL: Wayward5oul Yep. I started getting blood clots at 30 years old. Birth control pills could kill me. Give you a real kicker. Many southwestern and meso american native american cultures had a form of chemical birth control that was made from a plant extract. I will have to find the study, but a Harvard OB/GYN researcher got curious when he was a resident at a reservation hospital in the 60's and started researching it. He discovered, that unlike the birth control pills of the day (and every one that followed those) the plant extract had absolutely zero harmful side effects. He also discovered that 'primitive' cultures around the world practiced similar methods with plants in the same family. However, when he approached the FDA to actually try and develop a birth control pill from this particular plant, he was shut down. The reason, in case you are interested, is because the plant in question is also considered a class 1 controlled substance, as is the entire family of plants. The plant is peyote. It seems that for some thousands of years, the 'primitive' heathens of the new world and other places knew how to separate the hallucinogenic compounds from the ones that were harmless and were using it for everything from pain killers to birth control. There is even a similar compound found in cannabis. It tricks the body into not allowing the egg to implant in the uterine wall. Like other drugs of a similar nature, albeit artificial in origin, the use of the compound slows and minimizes periods, prevents the over production of hormones associated with blood clots in women, and in older women, will minimize the problems associated with menopause. However, due to the way the controlled substances act is written, unless the plant has been proven medically beneficial if properly refined prior to being put on the list, it takes an act of congress to remove it from the class one list. While I do not know why these drugs are not used in other countries, I suspect it may be for similar reasons.
