I don't think we will know that answer to the OP question for a long time. It's easy to see why the rise of China, and its increasing regional influence (some would say dominance) could cause the Philippinos to look towards Beijing for future friendship and possibly protection. But don't forget that the Philippines is also in dispute with China over the Chinese occupation of and claims over some islands in the South China Sea and it will also be anxious to maintain its sovereignty and independence. So whether both parties will be able to form a mutually beneficial long term relationship is still an open question.

I have been there, more than once over a time frame of many years. I am not unaware of the bredth and depth of my country's involvement there. My answer to the question posed is that the phillippines are a soverign nation and they should do as they please. How thier decission affects amerika,china or russia is yet to be seen. As for your snark, I would sugest you find a shoe box and put it inside,wrap it in some nice paper and put a big pink bow on it. Then shove it up your ass.

FR I think geography has alot to do with it. I also agree that they have (possibly valid) doubts about the US defending them against China. Look at the shit North Korea is doing, and the US isn't bombing them not even thinking about it. Why ? There is of course the fact that they don't have much we can sell, but they're cozy with China. If fear of war with China is not the reason they are leaving North Korea alone, that indicates then that all this sabre rattling at Iran is because of their natural resources and of course getting "involved" in their economy. They want to install a US friendly government that will borrow a ton of money from the IMF to improve their lives so much, and then they end up like Greece where parents have been know to just drop their kids off at an orphanage because they can't feed them. Some improvement huh. The only countries I can think of that ever got those motherfuckers off their back were Iceland and Hungary. Plus they (Phillipenes) might see the US as too aggressive. Even Trump doesn't seem to get it about the South China sea, it is ten fucking thousand miles away, the US has no business there. And Clinton is even more interventionalist. All this talk of preventing access to the South China sea, or the Straits of Hormutz for that matter, would be in retaliation for acts committed by the US government in that area. But we need to protect the South China sea from China ? We buy more shit from them than we buy from ourselves ! What, are they fucking crazy ? Yes. And yes. It is a good idea for quite a few reasons for them to ally with China. Another reason is that the US military is getting bloated, spread too thin and losing its edge. Our planes don't win, and everyhing is overbudget. If I were in charge I would make them really engineer this shit, in fact deliver a WORKING prototype before you get a fucking dime. Then we would not have this collosal fiasco concerning those boat anchor F-35s. See that's what people don't seem to get. Just because the US spends more it doesn't mean they get more. Kinda like healthcare. T^T

In as much as the Hague having ruled against China and on almost every point, the question becomes to what extent the US or any power or group of powers will try to establish a regime to enforce its rulings. The answers to your questions, depend on what China does in view of these rulings, doesn't do and what the Philippines want. As these disputes pertain to the South China Sea and the Philippines, do they rise up tho the level of the US either using force or having any need to effect or change the Philippine govt ? I doubt that very much on either count until US investors/capitalists suffer due to specific Chinese behavior and such as beyond building some small islands. If so, once that point is reached...all bets are off.
