That's probably where the difference in us reading him lays. I cuss like a sailor myself... all the time. Not out of anger, it's just a normal part of my vocabulary stemming from the social circles I grew up in. So I don't even really notice him saying 'fucking' all the time, because I do that habitually myself.

and various ways of putting people down (that he must know are socially unacceptable)- are either signs of anger - or signs of something actually more unpleasant. I think for his sake we'd better stick with 'anger'.

Perhaps.

I don't read it as anger, I read it as condescension for those he considers inferior. And condescension is usually an emotion doesn't blend very well with anger. Condescension is 'cold' and detached while anger is 'hot' and drawn-in.

I don't notice him using the word fucking either. I use it myself sometimes as a point of emphasis. I read Awareness the same way Ishtar does. I think it's strange how the open- minded crowd seems to have a rather hostile reaction and outright disdain to people who have open their minds to consider their ideas but ultimately determined to disagree with them. It's really the strangest thing.

That, combined with the attempt to belittle? No, I don't see that. You don't use the same strategy and I've never seen you adopt anything like the same tone.

Yep. But, to me ... unless there's something a little wrong with him, it's a put-on thing. He doesn't actually think his opponent is inferior, he just wants to give his opponent that impression. It's the pretence of anger, mixed with condescension - but behind that *real* anger, because the put-on thing isn't working. The more it feels like it's cracking him, the more he lays it on. The reason I see this is because, usually, people know when they're arguing with others who know far more than they do on a given subject. I've seen our Awareness do this too many times here.

As we've both said, YMMV.

I haven't seen you use it as a point of emphasis so far here, tamaka. In general, as with Ishtar - to me, you two together don't adopt anything like Awareness's tone. I'd be frankly astonished if most people didn't agree with me on this.

That wouldn't apply if people are seeing what they take to be prejudice on your part - which they clearly have here. People's minds, no matter how 'open' they like to think they are, can be closed to prejudice.

No argument. However, I'm guessing we'd probably disagree about which people hold which.

I don't type that way. But I speak that way.

For example his "Christ, what fucking universe do you live in?" from post 358 on this thread is something that I'm pretty sure I verbatim said to my slave just yesterday. If it wasn't exactly that, it was at least very very close.

As such, I don't really register it as him sounding angry, or him cussing when he does that, because I hardly notice it at all.

So he's 'faking' being angry because secretly he's really really angry?
Fair enough. It's funny how the same text can read so different to different people.

On a side note, I do find it hilarious that whenever somebody gets to the point where they don't want to argue with him any further (because they lost, or they consider it pointless, or because they're too disgusted by his views to even try anymore) that they invariably attack his choice of username. Especially seeing that I'm pretty sure that Awareness takes it as a clear sign that he's won whenever they do that (regardless of whether his opponent would agree with that view or not) and so it's incredibly entertaining how often those arguments seem to end with the opponent basically saying "Yeah you've won." while walking away convinced they just won.

The first time Awareness responded to one of my posts, he called me a fucking idiot simply because I suggested that gender might not be wholly biological. You can't really get around the fact that he's abrasive as hell.

And being open-minded doesn't automatically require you to consider ideas that are the opposite of being open-minded.

People often speak that way. *I* sometimes speak that way. But they don't write that way.

Funny - why would you think that? After all, he presumably doesn't think he's losing an argument every time he gets insulting - so why should people who are insulting him feel any different? I think we're in Occam's razor territory here, Ishtar. People insult Awareness for the much more simple reason that he's already insulted them- and that, repeatedly.

Prejudice is based on ignorance. Point- of- view is based on understanding the information and coming to a personal belief about it. Here' it seems that those that seem to have such pride in themselves for their 'Open- mindedness' are outright hostile to those who have considered the same information as they have but have adopted a different point of view about it.

Fair enough. It's funny how the same text can read so different to different people.

I sometimes read him as angry, sometimes see him as trying too hard, as if he is compensating for something. But I see the condescension evident, too, almost every time. Even when answering some benign post by someone, if he disagrees, he approaches that way.

I dont recall ever attacking his username, though he has attacked mine. And I'm one of those who had just decided he isn't worth the effort anymore. He used to be more interesting in his content, despite his manner of delivery, but now he invariably sounds like a broken record, except for when he actually isn't being provocative. It's almost like the point of his posts has become to provoke, and the content is secondary, while it used to be the other way around.

I'm not talking about the reason it's done. I'm talking about how I ended seeing either party taking what why it's done.
Whenever it happens, they both seem to think they came out victorious.

Well, whatever. Fuck that for a game of soldiers. (All six words of that last carefully chosen. [;)]) Me, I don't need to 'win' every argument and I sure as hell don't have the time and energy for it either. Awareness seems to me much more built such that he just must win - which is why he'll most likely have the last word between him and me on this thread, too.

I agree with that. But I would argue that it's because the general quality of these boards have gone down drastically. That's mostly because it does less volume though. Considering that it would most likely follow a general bell-curve distribution, less people automatically means less decent posts with good content, and thus less possibilities to draw on what's been said to provide decent content yourself as well.

I have the same issue myself... there's so much less decent topics to respond to that I get drawn in replying to nonsense all to often, and usually the only reply you have to nonsense is more nonsense. I really just shouldn't bother posting here as much anymore since the volume has gone down, but it's an old habit that's proving very hard to break, even though it's usually not proving to be worth my time.

Yeah I think that if you and I can agree on anything regarding Awareness it's that he's relentless. [:D]

I have to say that would be a lot more plausible if he'd not zeroed in, all swear-words and belittling-tactics blazing, on posts done by people who genuinely are quite knowledgeable in what they've been talking about. I mean, sometimes, it's made me think, 'For god's sake, man - this is like me arguing about the advantages of one gun over another with the American gunsters here!'

I have used that exact thing at Awareness, the reason being? He has showed a complete lack of awareness on the given subject. It's most certainly not that he has won with me, it's that he's a misogynist that can barely ever write anything without instantly throwing an insult.

He constantly acts like a petulant child, his idea of macho is to call every woman something derogatory and dismissive. In short he's a broken little toy, so even if he does have a valid point of view it's difficult to take him seriously because he's just so typical in every thread he responds to.

He does come across as angry, abrasive, and most of all weak. I don't think many people here are going to have an issue with throwing an insult his way, or with anyone else doing it, because quite frankly he earns it in spades. The only thing I now find surprising about him is that he has such great wifi so deep in that cave of his.

Needles

I dont see that. If anything, I see you as one of the least likely to get involved in nonsense. I see you don't post a lot, but when you do its usually right on point. You don't seem to waste words and you reference your own life experiences a lot, which is always interesting. And helpful.
