ORIGINAL: tamaka I think that flooding the country with too many of other cultures and not controlling it can definitely undermine the fabric of a country. And have you ever tried to teach a class with a couple of students that don't speak English? It undermines the education process. Those are a couple of points i thought were valid. Did all the non-English speaking Italians and Russians and Polish etc. who came here 100 years ago ruin our culture or undermine our education process? My experience is 'anecdotal,' like yours, but basically I just see a repeat of what happened then. First generation will never speak the language well; too old to learn a new language to the level needed. The second generation almost universally can speak reasonably well, more than enough to get along at school or work, the brighter of them well enough to write decent papers, go to the uni, etc. The third generation are fully on board, already a number of them knowing only enough of the old tongue to talk to the grandfolks. There are all these Chinese in my neighborhood, but probably %60 of them from the mainland, just here to attend the nearby University. No way to tell whom is which just from looking. The students speak to each other in Chinese, but they don't get sent here in the first place unless their English is up to task for school, and it's not difficult to understand them. The second/third generation Chinese US citizens- the girls speak perfect 'like, OMG!' valley girl. And yes, I hear plenty of Mexican/S American girls do the 'OMG!' thing too. You worry too much, we've been through this before, we're not all singing "That's Amore!" while dancing Russian triokas, etc. In any case, Governor Lamm greatly exaggerated the issues in other countries. Even with the French Canadian issues, and the Dutch/Walloon periodic spats, can we say that whatever troubles therefrom are noticeably worse than what we've experienced in this country by just being ornery and cantankerous? Even aside various racial upheavals in the past, just plain old Euro-white on Euro-white large battles and disruptions occur on an ongoing basis here; whether to invade the ME or not, the financial meltdown, etc. No immigrant cultural meddling involved in any of that. And yes, Lamm conveniently left out Switzerland in his 'proof' that "No country ever survived two languages" crap, along with several Asian nations in that situation likely to be there for a long time yet, Mandarin and Cantonese China being an easy one. But that's a bogus argument to begin with, because there will never be a Spanish-only area of any size in the US in the first place. That's such a slippery slope fallacy I don't know how you missed it.
