I never really realized just how rampant that way of thinking is, until this election. It has been a real eye opener for me, in terms of human behavior. I feel like I have walked around my whole life with my head in the sand, at least when it comes to the level of self delusion that people are willing to engage in.

As a believer in a much maligned socio-economic philosophy, I have been aware of this for a looooooooooong time. Damn near everybody hates "communism", and yet damn near nobody actually knows what it is, they just know that whatever it is, it is bad. The commies are the bad guys.

It would be funny if it weren't so common, and since it is, it is just depressing.


It's because communism never been done right. Or rather, never really has been done.

People only know what a corrupt-and-technically-an-oligarchy-but-passed-off-as-communism-to-get-the-lower-class-to-not-rebel-against-the-oligarchy system looks like (and results in) and then base all of their opinions on that.

Communism has been TRIED or SAID to be tried, a number of times before but it was always like something out of Animal Farm. Those at the top live like Kings and con the rest on the midden heap that they have never had it so good. THAT is NOT communism. That's Robber Baronetcy ( kinda like capitalism really I guess ?)

In truth communism has been tried very successfully for thousands of years. Monastaries/Nunneries are successful communal living communities.

Well I do think about them, because while I am a communist, I am not a Marxist. Studying the monastic movement teaches one a lot about how communism works and doesn't work.

Or at least how it SHOULD work. Most human frailties are left at the monastery door. In most other systems outside the monasteries, those frailties are praised as being smart business tactics, or good government strategies.

there's a little talking past each other going on as concerns "communism."

one of the bromides one sometimes hears when people respond to critiques of communism is "oh its just never been done correctly."

if we are talking communism with a little "c"---then all of those places where its practiced, and yes practiced successfully, are done so voluntarily. that is, the people are built that way, desire it and strive to make it work.

but when people are talking "communism" they are also meaning it with a capital "C" (at least for the sake of my argument)---that is, the practice of a political doctrine at the state level which is hostile to capitalism and economic classes and that ultimately has to enforce itself through threat of punishment on those gosh darned masses who just don't want to live that way.

so yeah---its been tried---the presence of an oligarchy or politburo or whatever we want to call the privileged class who rule---doesn't change the essential distinction between small communes entered into by choice and national ones at the barrel of a gun. the latter is the only way they CAN be tried.

in short, there is communism that's been tried and works, and there is communism that's been tried and doesn't.

Is there any real point to a discussion of communism on this board? Most people here don't even know what socialism is, other than the vague idea that it's just next door to satanism, or something. What chance is there with something that's even 'weirder' than socialism?

Most people here don't really understand capitalism, yet we discuss the shit out of that all the time.

Besides, why shouldn't I want to discuss my political beliefs occasionally, after all, you guys do it all day long, but just because you don't really understand mine and they make you uncomfortable, you don't want to discuss them. That's pretty fucking selfish of you.

I was only flagging up the obstacles you might face here. I think you have a sense of them, anyway, because you've been pretty tentative about discussing your communist beliefs to date. Not that I could stop you anyway - but go ahead with my blessing if you'd like. I do in fact think I have some idea of what your beliefs involve and have some sympathy for them.
