He didn't. He got less personal support than did Clinton. This is what's known as a 'democratic deficit'. It arises because the USA has a shitty electoral system - like that of the UK.

If I were living in the USA, I'd assume it to be *my absolute duty* to oppose Trump. I wouldn't give an oscillating rat's anus that the majority vote in the electoral colleges have adjudged Trump's views on so many matters to be correct - I would *know* that they're wrong and that it's *my responsibility* to oppose him. He is simply wrong on his views about climate change, for instance. On that alone, I'd oppose him, and do my best to disrupt whatever he wants to do on that score. I would make no apologies for that whatsoever.

In short, his winning the election means nothing, when it comes to how easy I'd allow it to be for him to carry out his policies. But that's democracy for you: it absolutely does not, and should not, end at any given election. Democracy means 'rule by the people' ... a presidential election is just one, and only one, of the means of achieving that.

Frankly, the bottom line for me would be: I'd have no intention at all of just sitting back quietly and letting that bullshitting, ignorant, incompetent, psychopathic arse carry on with his insane plan to fuck up my country for me. It would be my responsibility and my duty for me to do my best to prevent him from doing so - as a citizen and a patriot, living in a democratically-based nation that I want to see survive and prosper.

That's so fucking funny. For the last eight years I've heard so much shit from liberals about republicans in congress opposing Obama as if it was a hanging offense. Apparently now the shoe is on the other foot and for eight years I'll have to listen to liberals bitch about how it's a moral duty to oppose Trump.

Why are liberals always bitching?

And Trump voters felt the same way about Hillary.

Good question, Nnanji. If you want a harmonious nation in which everyone works together, as Trump says he wants, I guess you'd better find an answer to it. I think 'bitching' probably understates what's to come, somewhat.

Oh I don't know, but maybe stop acting as though it is some sort of apocalypse.

Too easy to be an alarmist - but also too easy to be a 'complacentist'. I remember reading about a book, written by an eminent historian of the day - all facts marshalled in superb detail; coherent and incisive arguments throughout ... that came to the supremely confident and authoritative conclusion that there'd never be another world war. It was published in 1938. (I can't remember the historian's name - not many can: his stature waned somewhat after WW2.)

If you have read my posts these past few months, you know that I would probably be labeled as belonging with the alarmist group than a complacent group. I detest Trump. But the fact is that he won, fair and square, surprising even himself, I believe.

It's done. He will be President. Acceptance of reality doesn't mean be complacent. Finding a way to deal with reality in a constructive manner is what I choose to do. Exercising my rights and responsibilities as a citizen, continuing to speak up for my rights and the rights of others, voting for candidates who I believe in, advocate for the things I believe in.

It's still my country, and like it or not, Trump is now my President. I am not going to be like the people that I have sat around and watched for the past 8 years bitch and moan about Obama, cheer on partisan blockades because Obama, grasp misleading or downright untrue "news" so they can justify and feel better about their own behavior, etc.

He is already waffling on key campaign promises, which proves he is going to be just as unpredictable for the people who elected him as he was for those of us who voted against him.

Frankly, the predictions of him getting impeached don't sound so farfetched to me. And if he is forced to leave office, that leaves us with Pence, who IMHO is not much of an improvement.

Said he wasn't going to do it and then went full out and did it. All in one post.

Who is he? And what did he do?

You said, "I'm not going to be like the people that I have sat around an watched..." Then you did exactly what you said you weren't going to do. The entire post was sitting, bitching, making us watch you.

So stating that Trump won fair and square is bitching?

Stating that he will be President is bitching?

Advocating for people to move on and be constructive is bitching?

Stating that Trump is my President is bitching?

Give me a fucking break. The worst thing I said about Trump was that he was unpredictable.

And just because I'm not going to spend the next few years sitting around bitching and moaning doesn't mean I am always going to keep my mouth shut. As I also stated, I plan on exercising my rights. I just dont plan on letting my opinions about Trump define my idealogy.

And besides, he hasn't been inaugurated yet. So if she were to bitch, it wouldnt count.

For the record, no one is making you sit and watch her .

In 1860 Honest Abe received just 39.9% of the 'popular' vote.

No, he won, fair and square. Just because some people choose not to participate in the process does not invalidate the process nor does it invalidate his win. The people have spoken.

I don't like it. But as a responsible citizen, I don't get to pick and choose whether or not to support the system every four years.

As for the rest, I believe I said something about standing up for rights, advocating for people and things I believe in, finding constructive ways of working within the system. I have the freedom to do that, which is one of the reasons why I have not lost confidence in the system.

I always thought that whoever wins the Popular Vote, should be the President. That's how true Democracy works. We do it with Governors, Mayor, Senates races and so on. This is twice now, in the last 16 years, when the person who won the popular vote lost, because of the rigged Electoral College. Al Gore had more votes than Bush and Hillary has more votes than Trump. In both cases, we are stuck with 2 Presidents who are hell bent on bringing this nation down. The only reason there wasn't an uproar when Obama became President, is because he actually did win the Popular Vote and the majority of Americans clearly wanted Obama as President. Unlike this rigged system we have now.

I appreciate the sentiment, though judging by the other responses that I have gotten, I would probably lose the popular vote.

Can you imagine if trump won the Popular Vote but Hillary won the Electoral College? The trump supporters would have been marching through Washington D.C., with their guns and all, screaming how the process is rigged. Yet, they are fine, just as long as their guy gets in. What a joke.

Yep. It's happened a total of 4 times in all. Out of 56 elections. 4 times. Out of 228 years.

Unfathomable.

Really? The popular vote in which election? See, that's the problem with this line, there wasn't one election, there were 50 of them, and Trump won the popular vote in the majority of those 50 elections.

Ya, nobody in the Midwest will vote for it. How many times did each candidate got to places in the Midwest compared to California. Everyone of those states will see it as giving total control to California and NY.
