Do other English-speaking countries still have 'Father Christmas' - or is he 'Santa' across North America, NZ, Oz, etc? Was he *ever* Father Christmas elsewhere?

When I was growing up in western Canada, it was Santa..

tsk, tsk, tsk.. so many "bah humbug"ers!.. where is yer sense of fun and whimsy???

Tonight i was over at a friends house, she found an expensive artificial 8 foot tree at a rummage sale for $10 cuz the attached lights didnt work.. so her hubby and son took gawd knows how many hours to cut off each and every light and then put together the tree with new lights (1,000 of them).. then she took some crystal cups her mother had since forever and tied them to the tree with a ribbon thru the handle & tied into a big bow, they looked amazing, just like large crystal balls.. she took crystals from an old chandelier and make dangly ornaments from them.. she had some other handmade ornaments too.. the tree looked absolutely gorgeous!!!

Normally I prefer a real tree to an artificial tree but a real tree would not have been able to hold the heavy ornaments this tree did.. I miss the green smell of a real tree but there was lots of other Christmas-y decor all over the house.. I will have to take my camera and take pics the next time I am there..

This Christmas will actually be the day after Christmas, 22+ friends & family will be at my friends house and we will all bring finger food and that kinda thing, not the traditional turkey grub (I dont eat turkey anyway).. and we will do a small gift thing/game meant to be fun & entertaining, max cost is $25 and re-gifting is fine,.. we will all take a number and in turn pick a gift from the pile (& open it), or we can "steal" an opened gift from someone who picked ahead of us.. the person that has their gift "stolen" then picks another gift (or "steals" someone elses).. a gift can only be "stolen" 3 times, it stays with the 4th person for good.. It should be a lot of fun, I have 2 gift ideas and am not sure which one to take to the party.. hmmmm...

This will be the first Christmas that will be anything like Christmas for me in a long time so no "bah humbug" for me this year.. All you grumpy bums can go suck lemons..

You are aware that the original use for the christmas tree was to cut one down, tie a virgin to it, and burn them both to hasten the return of spring, right?

The original use doesnt matter to me, its what it/Christmas is to me today.. I am not religious and I dont partake in the commercial crap & there are no kiddies to buy useless junk for so its just a time to meet some new (to me) people and have nice conversations and have some good fun.. well, as much fun as one can have with so many Republicans..

First, considering the 2/3rds of the human population falls under the umbrella label "terminally stupid" the odds of having nice conversations are slim to zero.

Secondly, good fun? Seriously? All the fun stuff is considered socially or morally unacceptable, or involves getting shitfaced, knee walking, toilet hugging drunk so remembering it is pretty much out of the question.

Third, Republicans dont have fun.

Seriously, look at the average Republican, they look like they been sucking on sour persimmons for a month!

Now, me, I had a lot of fun last night (although I damn near froze my nuts off) because I went to my other property where light pollution is as near to zero as you can get, set up my portable telescope and watched the stars and the meteor shower.

I also eavesdropped on a few conversations the local wildlife was having. The coyotes were going on about something (probably about a bunch of goats some local didnt get pinned before dark so basically it was a convo about a free buffet.

There were a few owls gossiping (had to be gossip, they kept asking 'who?')

Seems there was a pair of Mexican panthers screaming back and forth (although officially, the Texas Fish and Game deny they are in the area, so me and about 3 dozen other people who have heard them are actually suffering from auditory hallucinations.)

And a couple of Kera's cousins moved into the area for the winter and they were talking back and forth, with Kera putting her two cents in.

Downloaded the pics from the trail cameras that I have set around the property, which means I have some news for the hunters on the site.

You think you are being sneaky, but I have concluded that deer know exactly what a trail cam is. I got about ten shots of the same damn doe looking straight into the lens of one of mine.

I swear the damn thing was trying to take selfies!

Presumably the does don't get the same wi-fi reception with those tiny little horns of theirs as a stag with a decent rack gets, so she had to make ten tries before she managed to intercept the picture herself?

What some people consider "fun" I never even did when I was a kid living on my own at 17 and going to parties and such.. I decided at 16 that I wouldnt drink or do drugs (cuz I realized even then that it was stupid) but that didnt stop me from going to parties or out to have conversations & mingling with people.. I guess I was a "novelty" since I was the only one I knew that didnt do shite like that.. I dont do something just cuz "everybody does it"..

Well, I dont think all of them will be Rs and the Rs are ok as long as no one brings up politics!!!! right now the Rs tend to gloat a tad too much when the "T" subject comes up.. thats ok, once they get the real "impact" a few years from now they will be bitchin' like everyone else.. I know there will be a couple from Scotland (so probably Ds) who came here via Spain & Australia.. they will be interesting to talk to about their adventures in other countries.. that alone will be worth the price of admission, imo..
