If only the people who were whining about their precious factory jobs going overseas had taken your advice... then they might have picked up some new skills and adapted instead of asking Trump to ruin the economy so they could still feel like men. Well that's not really fair. In many cases, they've worked all their lives at this plant, and it's what they know. It's what pays the bills, the insurance, the retirement. And education and retraining in this country are very costly. At the same time, politicians are regularly playing them, aided by popular mis-belief. More jobs are lost to automation than to overseas plants, but to stop improving productivity and efficiency isn't a solution. Nor is pretending things will change -- Obama's support of exports helped, but it's a very partial solution. Rebuilding our infrastructure would benefit many, and needs doing, but costs money. Politicians want it both ways--Republicans have blocked infrastructure bills for years now. We could do what other countries are doing and invest in alternative energy technology, which would create a lot of new manufacturing jobs. But the US is heavily committed to propping up oil and gas. I agree that workers would be best helped by doing for themselves what no one else is doing, but I also acknowledge that it's not an easy thing to do necessarily or to know how to do successfully when everything is riding on it being successful. Most, understandably, do it when they are finally without a job and have no choice.
