Strident China Critic Named by Trump to Lead Trade Office

Peter Navarro will lead a new White House office that will oversee trade policy. Donald J. Trump also said the billionaire investor Carl Icahn would serve as a special adviser.

What could go wrong, right?

What exactly is going right right now?

Right... thank God for soybeans!

Edwird -> RE: Strident China Critic Named by Trump to Lead Trade Office (12/21/2016 11:49:28 PM)

Indeed. The US produces just shy of 1/3 the world supply of soy beans by itself, and China imports almost ten times more US soy beans than the next largest importer.

Our soon-to-be president has no idea at all how to deal with the job situation by way of education, like a smart country would. No, he's just going to kick and scream and bluster that "you are going to take more of our exports and we are going to take less of your exports because I say so."

So ... given Trump's record in extending bankruptcy proceedings against him as modus operandi to get his way ...

Well yeah, this is going to be 'interesting,' no doubt.

I wanted to send a lightbox, with the light separator from a three panel LCD projector to a guy in Norway. Like fifty bucks to ship. I ordered a new harddrive and the total cost was a bit over fifty bucks and is was drop shipped straight from China. The total was like fifty two bucks.

A telemarketer calls you from India and it is so cheap they can just call numbers off a list of at random, but try to call there. Watch your minutes.

As much as I liked getting a nice harddrive for cheap, do you think that is OK ? How come it costs practically nothing to ship shit here but a fortune to ship anything out ? What, those freighters run on wind power coming here or something ? I doubt it because the harddrive I got had a manufacturing date in the same month I got it. In fact it only took about a week for it to get here FROM CHINA. Something is not right here.

Far as I can see this has to do with these "free trade" deals which Trump wants to get rid of or at least modify. I am all for that. Your TV might cost a bit more but it will tend to make China less desirable for business. You know some have came here. Like Honda and Toyota. (from Japan though) They are doing OK, they did not have their hands out for TARP funds, WHY ?

Because they didn't play bank.

If I ran a car company I would tell the unions that I pay people to build cars, you want them paid to not build cars fine. I will take whatever out of their paychecks you want, if they authorize it. I will pay them to work, you want them paid not to work you pay them. Then when the banks pull their shit again, the unions are in trouble, not the car companies.

But the foreign automakers came here and made money, that is because they have a slightly different way of doing business. First of all it is not like fucking civil "service", you CAN be fired. And there is none of this one person punching in and out three other people's time cards like my Uncle did at Ford. (he actually got into management, and also got bought off when he ran for union president) But the fact is that alot of people in this country have no work ethic at all.

Fix that first.l

Don't you think the products itself could be part of it? Hardly anybody outside the USA/North America would buy an American car given the choice to get some European, Japanese, even Korean instead: Usually cheaper, better quality, cheaper maintenance, less weight, less fuel consumption ... and whoever tried to move an American car in and through a medieval Italian city knows within minutes why Italian cars are so small, and preferable for the Italian buyer (just as one example).

Many branches of US industry usually design and produce for the domestic market only - which of course is an important market. Chinese, Japanese, S. Korean, German, French industry, and a few others, produce primarily for export. Even with plants in the USA, Mexico, Brazil.

btw European unions have usually a far better acceptance in society (maybe with the exception of post Maggie Britain). In Germany they even participate in management. Neolibs have been doing some damage to workers' rights within the last decades but "hire and fire" is still the exception although legal bypasses have been established.

The US is the 3rd largest automobile exporter, amounting to $55 billion in 2016.

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: Strident China Critic Named by Trump to Lead Trade Office (12/22/2016 6:04:42 AM)

I don't think people like Termy et al have the faintest idea beyond their own back yard.

I had the (mis)pleasure of driving an Eagle when I lived in the US for a while.
It was a copy of a Mondeo but built like a tank, wasn't as comfortable, wasn't as well equipped, didn't drive as nicely, and used at least twice as much gas as its UK counterpart.
Its owner thought it was a great little runaround.
When I was talking with my US hosts and said that I was dismayed at my low fuel figure of 38-45 mpg they gasped because it was twice what they were getting for even a compact car.
They really had no idea just how bad US-made cars were compared to other places.
Fine if you want a gas-guzzling bulldozer/tank disguised as a car but useless anywhere else outside the USA.
And that's just one example of why the US automotive industry can't compete on the world market.

The problem with the US is.... it is capitalism at its worst.
It is the little man at the bottom of the pyramid that bears the brunt of their capitalist society.
Everyone else can afford to pass on costs, write it off, or lose it in some other way so it's not out of their pocket.

Termy's example of his hard drive is a classic example.
The man in the street pays a fortune for a 3rd-class service because their postal system is crap.
It is very slow, very expensive, and most businesses can offset the expense as a write-off.
In China, they realise that postal services are vital to the country exports so they are subsidised and cheap for everyone.

As for the telemarketers?
India is cheap because labour costs are dirt cheap compared to elsewhere.
But that aside, I can call most parts of the world for pennies but couldn't do that from the US.
And that is because US telecoms companies want mega profits.
When I was living over there, I had to pay for incoming calls and texts.
That came as a shock to me because here and most of Europe you pay for what you call or send, incoming is free.
And... you have to have a special long-distance package to call outside of your area or internationally - at an extra cost of course.
Most other places, it's standard to have every facility at no extra cost to the consumer.
Again, the poor American citizen is being ripped off at every opportunity.

I can understand where Trump is coming from.
But protectionism has never worked and probably never will.
What he needs to do is stop the rip-off culture that is endemic in US society.

Peter Navarro - that's a Hispanic name

Pretty obvious what your real motivation for opposing this selection is

You are a racist

Seeing as that car was discontinued 30 years ago, that means that you are basing your knowledge of the US on a visit from three decades ago...guess what, things change.

As the post directly above you points out, the US is 3rd in the world in automobile exports.

The car might have been old but that doesn't mean my visit was that long ago.
That's like saying you saw the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Does that mean you were there in 1889?? [8|]
And considering it was about the same age as the Modeo, it was a fair comparison to make.
I did drive quite a few other cars while I was out there - not just that one.
And none of them are a patch on what we have over here.
Point of fact: the last Eagle rolled off the production line in 1997.

Yeah, things change and not necessarily for the better.
Chevrolet make cars for the UK and Europe.
What a load of crap they are compared to German, Japanese and Korean ones.

And like early exports of Japanese cars, they were crap for decades but still exported them by the boatload.
The US might be the 3rd highest exporter by $ worth but that doesn't mean what you export are any good other than expensive.
Germany export 3x what the US export and most of their cars are at least good cars.
Even Japan export half as much again as the US do and they are a tiny country.
And interestingly, the US count light trucks as 'car' sales (as do Russia and Brazil) whereas others don't.
So the figures are skewed.
I wonder where the US would be if they counted their sales the same as everyone else??
Nowhere near 3rd that's for sure!

Couldn't care less about your personal opinion regarding automobiles. I simply pointed out that your statement about the US not being able to compete in the world market is in error, as the US is in fact the 3rd largest automobile exporter.

Musicmystery -> RE: Strident China Critic Named by Trump to Lead Trade Office (12/22/2016 2:32:15 PM)

How do you figure they are counted differently?

The VDA reports that the USA, Russia and Brazil record light trucks in their 'car' sales.
This was noted in best-selling-cars.com with a note "*USA, Brazil and Russia include light vehicles (trucks)."

Seeing as the US has a predominately high proportion of light truck market vs cars (sedans/compacts etc) compared to other exporters, if you removed those light trucks from the export figures the US would be a lot lower in the table.

tamaka -> RE: Strident China Critic Named by Trump to Lead Trade Office (12/22/2016 2:56:28 PM)

I think we should be selling them more air filtration systems than cars.

implicit in this statement is that European/british/asian automobiles got lots better mileage. could you source that please? especially keeping the year in question in mind.
