quote:
The mitochondrial genome you refer to identifies local women as the prime source of mitochondrial dna for the Ashkenazi. As such, attempting to use mitochondrial lineage as an attempt to prove anything in relation to Jewish history (which, of course, is patrilineal) is kind of stupid. The Jews allowed people to convert. Some of those locals were no doubt the four founders you refer to. You are missing the point. The women married diaspora Jews following banishment imposed by the Romans when the Second Temple was destroyed. Consequently, your claim that the Jews were driven to Europe in the 8th Century is not supported. Sephardic Jews also established communities in Spain and Portugal at the same time. It is not surprising to learn that the Sephardim greatly outnumbered the Ashkenazim at that time. The Ashkenazim and the Sephardim are not sects but cultural traditions. Together they comprise the largest majority of Israeli Jews with an additional number of Russians who arrived after the Soviet Union wasn't. I'd be interested in seeing a census of world Jews that put the percentage of Ashenazim at 3% in the 11th Century. Maybe compared to the Sephardim . . . but Jews throughout the world? . . . I have my doubts. You omitted the observation that in 1931 the Ashkenazim were 92% of the 16.7 million world Jews. Again, only an estimate. Oh, btw, Jewishness is designated through the mother not the father. Again your knowledge is woefully limited. But then, you are not much of a scholar, are you?
