What's out of hand it this sense of entitlement that you're somehow owed the fruits of his work.

I don't need anything thanks. I just don't like the middle class evaporating and a return to kings, lords and peasants.

well before you go too much further with those thoughts, spend some time in serious study discerning exactly how it is that the presence of billionaires somehow causes the shrinking of the middle class.

as to your last point about "peasants"---the poor in our country are better off than most of the rest of the world, AND, their income has risen.

Yup, exactly. I'm middle class. My taxes have gone up, my health insurance is almost as much as my mortgage, and the $15 minimum wage is going to hurt small businesses.

Please show me where I said anything remotely close to that.

Social programs are killing the middle class, not billionaires.

We're in a system that thinks it's okay for us to pay $1671 per month for two people for the worst plan to support a family of 6 paying $75 a month for the best plan.

Well, for one, I'm advocating for the Government to get out of my health insurance and to regulate the insurance companies, so that the middle class isn't gouged to pay for others.

I think pay should be based on skill, performance and experience, rather than breathing. For every dollar that wages go up, it's costs the employer an additional $1.30 - small businesses can't absorb that and it's going to kill Mom and Pop industry. (And economists say that rent control does better at controlling poverty than wage increases.)

I'm for having to do something to get welfare - whether it's labor, charity work, or going to school.

I think Community Colleges should be free.

The school system is funded by property taxes and we already partially pay for community colleges. (We just had a bond measure go through for renovations) I think most people would be willing to pay a few extra dollars in to have it be free to students that meet the entry requirements.

Hell, I've offered repeatedly to teach people what I do - for free. In the past 6 years, only 8 people took me up on it. Only 1 bothered to show up and do the homework. I ended up hiring her.

tamaka -> RE: Warren Buffet made $12 billion in 2016 (12/30/2016 6:14:11 PM)

I don't think too many of the elderly people living on a fixed income want to pay any more property taxes than they do now... especially for a bunch of middle class people's kids to go to college.

Personally i paid for myself to go to college. A combination of government loans and working about 28 hours/week while taking a full- time courseload. I don't see why everyone else can't do the same.

No hard work at all in starting an enterprise in 1964 and making into an enterprise worth a $200,000+ share price some fifty years later. That's what doing nothing is all about.

And Warren Buffet built himself up enough of a fortune that he can now make $12 billion a year barely lifting a finger. Don't see why everyone else can't do the same.

So why should he have to share with everyone, and not be allowed to hoard or save his money if he wants to?

Amen on the first point.

As for the second point ....

You've got it bass-ackwards. Germany, e.g., has a 'free' education system for everything but die Universität, which in any case is immensely cheaper in than in the US.

The Germans very much value community college education (or it's superior version as exists there) as a constituent component of their socioeconomic well being, which is why it's available to every student up to the task for 'free.' Nothing in society is absolutely 'free,'

So as consequence of all that, who is the third largest exporter in the world?

Do you think that a country of 83 million proposed to do that by bullying up to a country of 1.3 billion people, or anybody else? No, that could only be accomplished by having something to offer.

They did by that by recognition of the fact that any country so utterly stupid as to consider any higher education beyond HS as a 'luxury' or 'privilege not appreciated if given for free' gives their own country an immediate economic advantage.

I have no doubt that the Germans nor Chinese or anyone else could compete with the US If our attention to education came anywhere near competing with theirs, but such fatuous and unthinking comments as yours doesn't give much hope to any good outcome there.

Here's the news: no country who considers being a 'player' in the world would do anything BUT advance the the course of education in every way possible, in order to compete. They don't consider education a 'luxury' but a necessity.

OTOH, we could just bitch about Mexicans while we allow green cards to every foreigner science post grad we can get ahold of because too many good minds in the US only care about finance or law professions. Screw materials science, although fossil fuel geology isn't a bad option.

Edwird -> RE: Warren Buffet made $12 billion in 2016 (12/30/2016 10:31:40 PM)

You don't see many green card professors in the business/finance departments, let's put it that way.

If I went to the seventh floor of whatever building they confined my math teachers to, All I could hear was a bunch of Mandarin (so I guess) and all I could smell was a bunch of not unpleasant cooking.

Leave the academic grunt work to the grunts.

So, you think he didn't work hard to get to where he is?

No... i don't. How many long hard hours would nurses, teachers, plumbers, etc have to work to make that kind of money?

So your argument is that because someone else doesn't earn as much as he earns, he hasn't worked hard.

No... my argument is that no one should be able to make that kind of money. The money he has is way beyond the proportion of any 'Work' he has done. Money is made for circulation.

If you had any clue how a business or an economy works, you would realize that there is no way the fortune could have come to this much other than precisely knowing where and how to "circulate the money." And many others gained share from his acumen in that regard in their retirement accounts.

If he was of a sort to 'keep it all to himself' he'd be stuck where he was in 1964.
