http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4071826/Steve-Martin-shamed-deleting-Carrie-Fisher-tribute-tweet-critics-called-sexist.html

It was such a terrible, terrible, terrible crime for a male to make such a compliment to a woman. Now he must be male bashed and male shamed for it!

Time and time again, people in this forum keep saying I'm a whiner, I'm pathetic, and my complaints are petty. But it will all the sudden not be considered as whining, pathetic, petty etc when feminists decide to have a problem with a male saying "the most beautiful creature I had ever seen" about a woman.

Not to mention, I will be the one seen in the wrong for pointing out that feminists are whining and making a pathetic petty complaint. Not the feminists who are being whiny, pathetic, and petty. That's female favouritism for you.

But actually, this was a huge overreaction by people who really need to learn how to pick their battles. But I seriously think that the right wing media is complicit because they hate letting these kinds of overreactions go and will always use them to portray feminists as shrill and irrational.

Obviously I don't know him, but Steve Martin has always struck me as far too intelligent to be a sexist jerk and even if this was meant as derogatory (which it wasn't), or something he did all the time, trying to micromanage this kind of thing via public shaming is only going to breed resentment.

It's also hurting their cause and turning people into judgmental jerks who are constantly looking for any reason to get upset (not unlike you, respectmen).

Some people just are not happy unless they have something to piss and moan about. But then again maybe they are just sad because no one has ever suggested they were the most beautiful in the world. I'd like to think that Carrie would have smiled and thanked Steve for his comment.

As to your comment that "people in this forum keep saying I'm a whiner, I'm pathetic, and my complaints are petty."

That's because you are and this article isn't going to change that.

I think it's an absolute sin that the "Professional Victims' Brigade" (PVB) has been given so much power in this country.

The chain "Cinnabon" tweeted a tribute featuring a profile view of Fisher's iconic character, "Princess Leia" with their cinnamon bun over-layed onto her hair style which read: "R.I.P. Carrie Fisher. You'll always have the best buns in the galaxy"

They were lambasted for the wording. I think it's a bit "icky" when companies try to capitalize on a celebrity's death (It might have been different if Fisher had been their spokes person), but the shit storm they got was un-called for and just another example of the ridiculous power of the PVB.

I wish I had this special licence like feminists. The licence to complain and not be deemed as a whiner, pathetic, petty.

We have loony Lucy the feminazi here who complains about something very petty like tampon tax. That all gets given a pass and not considered whiny, pathetic, petty.

I wish I had this feminist privilege. Lol

I don't think it's a terrible crime, but yeah, it was a stupid and sexist thing to say. And yeah, some of the reaction was doubtless well over the top, but it's absolutely right to call people when they make sexist comments like this.

The presumption that a successful professional should be described first as a "beautiful creature" is plain stupid.

Not as stupid as the whining little babies who can't see how the systematic objectification of hard working people can be irritating, mind you.

I'm a feminazi, because I showed you why there is a difference between heart attacks in females and males.???? Several times, but its too boring and real to digest for you isn't it? you are more than allergic to reality and facts.

No I was comparing you to a guy who thought women could pee their period blood out. It doesn't matter how many times you say that, you are still wrong.. And clueless.

Yes you do wish you had it dont you:)
But you dont...
And you never will.
You would be as sad as a woman, as you are a man.
Its not your gender that's the issue
its your personality.
And that is down to you, not lefties, not feminist men, not feminist women.

No, you're a feminazi because you don't live in the same deluded world that respectwhinybabymen does. Until you agree with everything he has been indoctrinated to believe by his MRA babymen idols, you will always be a feminazi.

When I was a young man, Carrie Fisher was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen. She turned out to be witty and bright as well

So, when you walk into a place and see a woman, the first thing you notice is her wit? Her sense of humor? Do you meet all people with closed eyes so you won't see their looks first?

Nobody, not men, not women, as long as they have the use of their sight, doesn't notice how someone looks when they first see them. And, nobody, not a man, nor a woman, can tell if a person has a good personality, wit, sense of humor, etc. upon first sight.

Had he stated that she was witty and bright, and turned out to be the most beautiful creature he'd ever seen, he'd be railed for the prejudice that witty and bright women aren't usually beautiful. Damned if you do. Damned if you don't.

I caught that headline last night just before I went to bed, but didn't read the story then. I was hoping it wasn't something stupid like this. I think that she would have been flattered and took it exactly as he meant it.

I feel about the same. I did cringe a bit at that use of 'creature'. I got the impression that Steve Martin was recalling a feeling he'd had long ago as a young man - you know, when (certain) women can be so magically alluring that they can seem like preternatural, something-beyond-human, ... well, 'things'. Fairies, angels, maybe.

Or similar. Sexist - but I thought he was saying something heartfelt that he meant as genuinely very fond.

I'm not sure that makes sense, DS. People don't usually 'turn out' - implicitly later - to be physically beautiful. You tend to see that from the off ... don't you?

ETA

What am I talking about? Most people here read my words before seeing my profile pics. I really can be a silly sausage sometimes.
