An intelligent attack on free speech, not to say I think Trump is particularly intelligent, would not start by shutting down the media but by casting aspersions on the media's credibility so when the media is shut down it would seem justified.

Then I invite you to follow your own logic wherever it leads. How would one tell the difference between the universe where someone casting aspersions upon the media is doing so for a long game strategy of eventually shutting it down, vs the universe where someone casting aspersions on the media is the result of the media giving infelicitous, disingenuous, or straight-up dishonest coverage?

Which universe are we in?

Maher is also concerned that Liberals are shutting down free speech, and I certainly see them doing it a whole lot more than Trump or his supporters. Trump is just a horse's ass, however "progressives" actually are aggressive about shutting down speech they do not agree with, and have been doing it since before the current train wreck we elected was in office.

They are aggressive about it and they keep attempting it in many ways. The whole "fake news' narrative was started by the left to try to shut down as much unfavorable coverage as possible. Hillary urged Congress to pass laws! Citizens United is all about stopping free speech as it relates to political campaigns, Obama repeatedly attacked FOX News and Rush Limbaugh because they don't push his communist agenda. Obama's FCC was trying to hinder conservative speech, paid Hillary goons goons rioted and smashed heads at Trump rallies and at his inauguration. Now they are attacking people going to hear Milo and other conservative speakers

Nutsucker goons and thugs did indeed smash nutsucker goons and thugs heads as Trump rallies, they were paid 2500 apiece by the nutsuckers to do so, unfortunately they also smashed some real American citizens heads in tool

The rest is nutsucker slobberblogging, their fake news.

Which universe are we in?

The universe where the politician complaining about media distortions is only insisting that the elements of the media which portray him in a bad light are distorting the facts, but those which are connected to his cabinet appointees are beyond criticism.
A Chinese universe, perhaps...

While Bill Maher often complains about impacts to free speech, I must point out that in the present incarnation of journalism, the truth is always the first victim.

Lets face it, long gone are the days of Walter Cronkite who reported the news first, then followed with his opinion. In modern journalism, the truth is bent, spindled, twisted, spun, and other wise distorted to the point where, if you can actually find the truth, it is a fleeting gem of reality, as rare as virgin at an orgy.

It does not matter if it is FOX, MSNBC, CNN or whatever network, the truth is no longer just the facts. News is driven by ratings, spin and not fact.

Gone are the days of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein who sought only the facts. Gone are the days when reporters just reported the news and did not add embellishments comparing one party or another to infamous groups of the past, often at the cost of historic accuracy.

The biggest problem is that the American people have become too stupid to think for themselves and depend on these pseudointellectual 'reporters' to tell them what to think.

Instead of 'big brother' telling people what to believe, we have a multitude of big brothers who cannot agree on the truth. And the point is that even if a natural disaster were to occur, someone on some national news broadcast would find a way to blame the sitting president for something as out of his power to control as an asteroid impact or earthquake.

Personally I have reached the conclusion that should all news outlets ever reported the truth with nothing spun, twisted, and stuck to just the facts, God would have a massive heart attack or, for the non believers, the Universe would destroy itself.

Is it really too much to ask for just the facts, and not opinions as to motive, blame or bullshit? Are Americans too fucking stupid to think for themselves and come to their own opinion?

IN particular, addressing news that never happened.

That's quite a straw man you've got going there.

Ironically, it's Trump who wants looser libel laws. He'd have 10 times the lawsuits he has now!

Nonetheless, this ultimately has to be a first amendment issue. No to news posing as other news sites--that's a copyright/trademark issue. And yes to people learning to use their fucking heads beyond reading the click bait. Sadly, editors creating misleading headlines isn't likely to change. And people wanting to read what they want to read, not what is actually happening, is the real problem.

Jefferson was right about the importance of the free press. In the "anyone can be a news source" age, though, its credibility is falling fast, and then information will be dead. Long reign rank stupidity. Hello Middle Ages mentality.

I wonder whom we'll imprison for saying the earth goes around the sun first?

You cherish fake news because that's all you've got, but Hillary also urged Congress to act against fake news.

So...

And that's among the reasons I didn't vote for her either. You really, really, just don't get it.

But that straw man is all you have, I suppose.

"Alternative facts" and "fake news."

How's the Bowling Green investigation going, btw?

You have stated that the reason you cast you third party protest vote, was because New York was a lock for Hillary. So now you trot out this smug lie, trying to pretend that you wouldn't prefer Hillary to President Trump

You have proven repeatedly that you don't know what a straw man fallacy is.

The reason you defend CNNs ability to libel the president

No one cares that someone misspoke. Democrats don't only misspeak they deliberately mislead all of the time. You have the mind of a child who isn't bright.

Misspoke?

Once is her misspoke, three times is outright lies.

Once on MSNBC, once in an interview with Cosmopolitan magazine and once with TMZ.

Nobody is beyond criticism, but your president seems to have a real issue with that idea, and will keep pouting and tweeting so long as the (left-controlled, obvs) media persists in telling the truth about him.
