While many threats played into the decision to move the clock 30 seconds forward from where it was in 2016, one person in particular prompted the scientists to act.

"Never before has the Bulletin decided to advance the clock largely because of the statements of a single person. But when that person is the new president of the United States, his words matter," David Titley and Lawrence M. Krauss of the Bulletin wrote in an New York Times op-ed.

But of course, this is all just fake news by a liberal organization that is biased against Trump, the innocent victim.

And of course they don't have legitimate reasons for any of this-- it's all because they are on the payroll of the fucking Chinese government.

Remember how USAToday never used to side with either political candidate?

No, Gannett (USA Today parent company) has always been rabidly partisan alt left propaganda.

I thought that we were already dead from the nuclear war our cowboy president, Ronald Reagan, started by talking tough to the Russians. Any of us that are left are in a camp built by George W. Bush, who installed a Nazi state.

Forget the USA today story, you might actually want to read the entire statement.

Not once is Trump's attitude, statements or possible insanity is mentioned.

However, climate change, the increasing number of fake news stories on social media (citing the Pakistan’s foreign minister issued
a blustery statement, a tweet actually, flexing Pakistan’s nuclear muscle—in response to a fabricated “news” story about Israel.) as one of the reasons for the move.

And the fake news stories is a valid point. In the US, we had one guy who was arrested due to fake stories about pizzagate, specifically Hillary being involved in a child trafficking ring operating out of a pizza parlor.

Intelligent educated men and women see something that looks valid and react to it, because in many cases, there is no time to actually double check the facts before taking whatever necessary steps if the story is true.

Some years ago, a poster on this site posted a link to a 'news' story about a Texas ranch on the Rio Grande having been taken over by Mexican drug cartel members, and that the local sheriff and police were in a gun fight.

When others posted that none of the major news outlets had anything on the story, he responded by stating it was a news black out by the Bush Administration.

The truth is that it never happened, but so many people who read the initial story on a right wing extremist web site spread it across the country, and in the county where it was allegedly happened, the local 911 system was overwhelmed, which resulted in at least one fatality due to the simple fact that the call to 911 could not get through to summon an ambulance and paramedics.

Nor is our modern technology mistake free.

Since the years of Bush sr, there have been no less than 15 incidents where completely benign incidents caused nuclear forces in both the US and Russia to issue preliminary go orders, which means that everything was ready to launch and was waiting for Presidential order to actually go to war.

One case was the asteroid that detonated over Russia, simply because that rock's trajectory appeared ballistic in nature. Their computers read it as a launch from a western nation.

It didnt help that these people 'in the know' with 'connections to the defense department' also made statements that baby nukes were being used against Syrian rebels.

The bombs in question turned out to be Vietnam era daisy cutters. A 32000 pound bomb originally designed to be dropped from the b36 peacemaker bomber in lieu of an actual nuke. The Vietnam era version had a 20 foot probe attached to the nose to cause it to detonate 20 feet above the ground, and was dropped from a cargo plane.

Yet the faked news story got enough attention that various state departments in the middle east were demanding proof that nukes were not being used.

The point being is simple, social media and computerized fail safe systems may just be the undoing of the world as we know it.

Lets face reality, there is no sane reason for the US and Russia to have on hand enough nuclear weapons to hit every target in either country 10 times over.

And still leave enough to blast any other place our leaders see fit.

Mutually Assured Destruction, not only for the super powers, but everyone else on this rock.

To be quite honest, when you think about the situation scientifically, the human species behaves more like a cancer than anything else. We have the power to either improve our ecosystem and thus provide a viable habitat for future generations or we can destroy it.

And we are destroying it in the name of progress.

Humans therefore are a failed evolutionary experiment.

Actually, humanity has reached a tipping point.

Due to excessive non-agricultural water use, lack of significant rain and snow fall, three of the largest aquifers in the US are rapidly becoming depleted.

Then there are areas that due to excessive irrigation, the soil is less able to produce crops, such as the central California valley, and the expanding dead zones have brought back a blast from the past, valley fever.

In very simple terms, we have polluted and over used the planet to the point that recovery may be impossible, and thus, even without a nuclear war, humans may very well become extinct.

2 of the people who work for the Bulletin (the people responsible for the clock) explicitly stated that Trump is a factor in an opinion article they wrote for the New York Times. They also said that this is the first time ONE PERSON has ever been responsible for such a decision.

I quoted them in my post.

jlf1961 -> RE: Doomsday Clock moves closer to midnight--it's Trump's fault (1/27/2017 6:45:25 PM)

To be honest, I really could care less who or why the clock moved forward.

As of this afternoon, I have 500k rounds of ammo, split between 9mm, 45 ACP, 40 Remington, .308, 338 magnum and 30. cal for the two 1919 brownings.

12 months gourmet (it aint but they claim it is) freeze dried rations for 16 people, and 6 years worth of MRE's for 16 people.

The bunker is complete enough that it can be used if necessary, since all I really had to do was a bit of renovation to bring a structure built by SAC in the mid 60's to something a bit more comfortable.

Now while the entire family only numbers 8, this means that there is room for another 8 people....

And to be quite honest, there may be 2 or 3 on these boards that would find access, the majority of the rest of the human population can go suck green donkey dicks.

Actually, I got the idea for a bug out bunker some years ago when a security firm I worked for was contracted to provide security to World Health Organization Emergency facilities in places where there were out breaks of stuff like Ebola, Marburg and Lassa fevers.

Kept hearing doctors talking about how thankful the viruses hadnt gone airborne or done a full species jump. So I asked why.

The biggest fear these guys have is a virus such as one I listed actually doing a real species jump to humans, and in the age of modern travel, they explained that a full blown pandemic could happen in days.

They also explained that the only real way to not be exposed once it showed up is complete isolation from population centers.

Well I already owned a piece of property with a Nike SAM installation that was tied to an old 60's era SAC com bunker, and I went to work.

Theoretically, the both command and living structures could take a near miss from a 5 to 15 kiloton nuclear device.

And, if I renovated the entire underground and semi underground facility, I could probably fit 40 or more people in there.

Problem I dont know 40 people I would be willing to let in the place.

There is a deep well that is actually inside the main structure, goes down 500 feet to fresh water, I have solar and wind power for the place, and it happens to be on the recent extended digital cable line, so I have broadband there as well (not that the broadband will do any good in the event of someone firing nukes.)

And to be honest, I could use the NIKE magazine as an underground hydroponics operation and aquaponics (fish.)

I actually hope that no one starts throwing nukes around as that would make deer hunting impossible, but a nice pandemic caused by some uber rich moron going out and catching some bug no one has heard of before would not be too much of a bother.

And since the local town has a regional airport and is on a major east west interstate and thanks to the human tendency to cluster rather than disperse in a situation like that, I figure after six months, the town will be empty.
