Science is fact... until they find out they didn't know what they didn't know.

But that is science.

I don't know why you bring this up, since you seem to not be attached to religion.

Religion want's to hold knowledge to social norms existing hundreds or thousands of years ago and never change.

It is only natural that scientific knowledge or understanding changes every ten-twenty years or so in more adventurous matters, like particle physics or materials science, etc. But some things in science don't change much over the years. We all post here because of a long reliable and well attained understanding of electricity and electronics and reading glasses, for those in need of.

All I can say is that I'm glad that Windows or Microsoft or Apple or Amazon don't have control over more than they have already, otherwise we'd be having to change our electrical systems to 70 volts then to 500 volts then to 90 volts then to to 40Hz to 173kHz to 86Hz, every five years. Likewise reading glasses and plumbing.

I'm not attached to religion, but i'm not attached to science either. There are very basic elements to both that we all enjoy... from religion some basic sense of morality and from science some basic but very crude understanding of our situation here and a few nice inventions, but to put much more faith in the findings of science in the year 2017 is like putting faith in an infant or young toddler exploring their crib or backyard.

mnottertail -> RE: The Swedish meatball masacree – never forget! (2/26/2017 10:53:01 AM)

and to put faith in religion you must believe that two penguins waddled to the middle east to hop on a boat built by a 500 year old man.

Decisions decisions.

Right, never mind advances in medicine and sanitation which have increased our life span expectations in the West. Never mind the benefits of advances in agriculture, transportation, and electronics that make our lives more comfortable. Well hell, girl, why don't you go back to your horse pulled plow, then at the end of the day return to your thatched hut to cook root vegetables over a wood fire while you wait for the midwife to assist you? You don't think much before you type on your toy pc, do you?

As to the morality of religion, it is all just empty lip service emoted in solemn incense by a cadre of pedophiles and subsumed to the morality of greed and power that truly informs our world.

You are delusional.

And the advances of science that have resulted in people not using their bodies has not helped our overall health at all. Neither have all the 'scientific advances' they have made to our food supply which has resulted in us no longer getting the nutrition that we should, not to mention the cancers we get from eating chemicals that shouldn't be there. For every two steps forward we make we take at least (if not more) one step back.

I am not trying to totally discredit science because of course it has some positive elements to it, but to those who cling to this 'knowledge' that they think they have due to science, i think people don't realize where we are on the spectrum of our ignorance.

You make some interesting comments but I think they are misconceptions.

To what era are you comparing the "use of the body?" More people are exercising more now than were doing so in say in the first 75 years of the 20th Century. Less people are sedentary now than then. Although, I will grant you more of us are obese. We have both of more or more of both.

If you wish to compare to the early parts of the last century and before when people worked hard (used their bodies) in agriculture before the advent of the tractor and then the combine, farmers lived a mean life, their work was back breaking, and their lives short. The same was true of city dwellers. Their life expectancy was also short and there was a high child mortality rate, one reason why large families were in vogue.

I believe you are wrong about the degree of nutrition we ingest. As far as cancers are concerned, I would ask you to support your contention with some citations. I don't know if there is more cancer today than in previous eras. My father died of cancer in the 1950s and my mom in the 1970s, and here I am at 103 years with nary a tumour to call my own.

Medical science has pretty much eradicated polio, diphtheria, whooping cough, small pox, typhus, typhoid fever, cholera and tuberculosis in the civilized West; and has kept influenza and Yersinia pestis at bay.

Contrary to your accusation, we are not clinging to knowledge gleaned from science, and of course we anticipate further understanding in the future, unless some catastrophic Malthusian events push back against the overpopulation of our species or unless the rise of Trumpfster populism heralds an era of severe reduction of financial support for the sciences, both of which are to be feared.

The average annual cancer rate in the United States between 1975 and 2013 seems to be 463.34 incidents per 100,000 population of all men and women, black and white, with a high in 1992 of 510. Is that a major explosion of incidents?

Don't confuse nor conflate scientific endeavor with corporate endeavor to not only increase profit every year but increase of change every year, but then even rate of change every year, a completely unrealistic venture before we even get to the second derivative.

In any case, do you think that in 100 years or 100 thousand years or a million years that the scientists will all of a sudden discover that the earth doesn't complete rotation in ~24 hours, and do that ~365 times to get back to where we were last year and will be in the year next? Unlikely. Actually, the earth rotation and circuit around the sun will be something a little bit different in a million years, but they've got that figured out, too. That's the point.

And if anyone understands where we are on the spectrum of ignorance, it would be the scientists. All those tiny particles showing up to the camera (or whatever spectrum analysis contraption) for two picoseconds and then disappearing has all of us bumfuzzled, even the modern day Einsteins, which investigation of is only one of several efforts to reduce human ignorance.

Only a little different than when they were trying to figure out voltage and current and capacitance and reactance and all that other stuff that we actually have at our fingers nowadays.

The scientists are way ahead of you or me on all that, sweetheart.

longwayhome -> RE: The Swedish meatball masacree – never forget! (2/27/2017 4:11:51 PM)

The problem is that Trump is entirely ignorant about Sweden and relies on unsubstantiated media outlets for his "information". You might have thought that as a President he would use the White House apparatus to check stories, rather than hearing a sensationalist sound-bite somewhere and then using (or misusing it) because he likes the message.

It wouldn't take much to test the "evidence" of "social breakdown" as a result of immigration in Sweden, like the Swedish rape statistics which I posted on another thread.

quote:

The rant in the OP's youtube clip repeats the inaccurate claim about immigrants and rape statistics in Sweden.

I love the way that the original "fake" news story about Swedish rape being a result of immigration was illustrated using pictures of an article from a reporter from BBC Radio 4 More or Less programme, who was clearly making the point that Swedish rape figures were relatively high because of how the Swedes gather their statistics.

She was actually refuting the argument that it was because rape was more common in Sweden than other countries, arguing that the figures had risen as a result of people being encouraged to report rape and because in Sweden each separate act is counted in the stats as a rape. If a man penetrates you a number of times without consent or your partner rapes you twice a week for a year each is counted as a separate rape, which is not usually the case in other countries.

The rise in the rape figures in Sweden is due to the changes described above (i.e. the change in the way the figures were gathered and the high reporting rate). Importantly the noticeable "rise" in the number of reported and recorded rapes pre-dates the large influx of Muslim immigrants. From that date onwards the Swedish rape figures have actually stayed around the same, suggesting that the influx of immigrants does not correlate with the rape figure in any way.

In other words the Swedish rape figures used in the anti-Muslim "fake" news have nothing to do with the immigrant population, and an important article, describing the real reason for the "rise", was waved around as if it backed up the anti Muslim/immigrant story.

Fake news? No, just intentional lies to whip up anti-Muslim sentiment.

Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Except you would expect the President of the USA to check before he engages his mouth (or his itchy Twitter finger).
