As for pointing a gun at another person.
Every firearms instructor for gun safety classes sponsored by the NRA, every law enforcement instructor, every military firearms instructor, will rip someone a new ass for pointing a gun at anyone, regardless of who is pointing it and how much training they may or may not have had.
The fucking headlines are full of 'accidental gun deaths' due to someone pointing a gun at someone, thinking it was unloaded or assuming it was unloaded.
Hell that is the first thing I taught my kids about guns, even play guns, NEVER POINT THEM AT PEOPLE!
Regardless of what the intention was, it is stupid to do so.
And bosco, seeing as how you are defending this proves one thing.
You are willing to through common sense out the window just to condemn some news agency you do not agree with.

Be sure the gun is safe to operate.
Just like other tools, guns need regular maintenance to remain operable. Regular cleaning and proper storage are a part of the gun's general upkeep. If there is any question concerning a gun's ability to function, a knowledgeable gunsmith should look at it.
Use only the correct ammunition for your gun.
Only BBs, pellets, cartridges or shells designed for a particular gun can be fired safely in that gun. Most guns have the ammunition type stamped on the barrel. Ammunition can be identified by information printed on the box and sometimes stamped on the cartridge. Do not shoot the gun unless you know you have the proper ammunition.

There is no way in hell any responsible gun owner can condone or even attempt to write this off.

Even if CNN is wrong in context it is correct in the simple fact that even the NRA would support that the act was dumb ass stupid.
