No one believes that houses in Iraq or Syrias largest towns and cities are empty. The notion Iraqi Special Forces thought this, despite having been fighting in the city for months is laughable. As an incidental, the recent raid in Yemen were a member of Seal Team Six was sadly killed, allso killed innocent civillians who were anti IS/AQ. The villagers thought IS/AQ were attacking them and fought back, the Seals called in air strikes and another Muslim village was blown to fuck.
Do you have any idea on how to deal with snipers in a combat zone?
In case you dont, there are just a few effective ways to do accomplish the elimination of the threat.
1) you get one of your own snipers to hunt the bastard down and try to get him.
2) you clear the house room by room which only works if you can actually get to the building, problem was someone on the ISIS side figured out that three, in three buildings are better than one, which probably made this option too damn costly.
3) Have tanks go in and neutralize (nice term meaning blow the building to hell and gone) the threat. Now this would probably have not killed the civilians in the basements, but it probably would have made them getting out impossible with the rest of the house on top of the doors and such.
4) Helicopter gunships
5) If available, the US ground forces would call in Specter or Spooky, AC 130 gunships which would spray the entire building with everything from 105 and 40 mm cannon fire to a SHITTON of rounds from mini guns. Hell I have watched one of these birds turn a 4 story brick building to rubble with mini guns alone, when they did a demonstration on what they could do for us poor ground pounders.

Everything after options 1 and 2 are going to be messy, and in fact option two is going to be messy since the first thing that happens is a grenade goes in the room to 'tenderize' the occupants followed by a couple of troopers spraying the room on rock and roll.
Of course there is the mandatory warning in the local language for the occupants to come out with hands up, followed by a 10 count, then the grenades.
But by all means, lets blame the commander and chalk it up to religious feuding.
Look, using infantry to clear snipers is expensive. For every sniper you get, you figure on losing five men trying to get one. And if the sniper is really good at what he does, you can double that.
Forget the roof, or even sticking the rifle out of a window.
A good sniper sets up far back in the room, usually using a table or something to lie on and sets himself where he has a 30 to 60 degree arc of fire on a street. He (or she) is far enough back that when they fire there is no muzzle flash to give them away.
The ones on the receiving end basically know what building he is in, but that is about it.
One more thing, if the snipers were really good, as soon as they heard the fast movers heading in, they should have beat feet getting out of the target zone.
US snipers are trained to take no more than 3 shots from any one position then clear it, because some dick head officer on the other side is going to call in arty or worse to pound everything in the general area.
Whats your point, the civillians are still just as dead. Maybe you just dont feel it would help to win hearts and minds by not killing the local populace.
Lets not forget Bush called it a war on terror then invaded Iraq for no reason, not a war on everyone. Where has it got us, some 14 years on and still sending in more US troops, opps forgot the PC neocon term is "Advisers"
