Status: offline 		According to the NYT, a growing number of surgery patients are choosing to remain awake, with a regional anesthetic numbing the surgical site, during operations. This can have healing and cost benefits, but can also prove a challenge for the surgical team.

As an OR veteran, I think I'd still prefer a general for anything more invasive than a haircut. But maybe that'll change.

Status: offline 		Doesn't it depend on what body part as well as your reaction to anesthesia?
Cataract surgery is done awake. The surgical eye is so fully dilated you can't see anything. the other one is under a sheet.

Thankfully, when they put the screws into my pelvis a year ago, I was fully under.

Status: offline 		I asked my doc if I could be awake when they took out my gallbladder,, I wanted to see the davinci working, but he said no, sighs
its really not good when a surgeon says oops while you are on the table.
I worked in a theatre a couple of times in my training back in the day
I can see why the surgical team would have an issue with it.
Of course its different these days, when you can get get sedated for a gastroscopy or colonoscopy. much friendlier.

Status: offline 		My surgeries tend to be marathons (5-12 hours), and I can't imagine having to stay in the same position all that time while awake.

epidurals are fun...

but yeah, for a long one, I wanna be under
the last time they put me under, I was as drunk as a skunk on it before lights out (or the equivalent of it ) I had the surgeon and anaesthetist in stitches because all I could do was giggle at everything.
I would be a hell of a distraction thru an entire procedure, and I would prefer not to have any ooops words coming out.

Status: offline 		Quite a few places now offer even major Abdominal Surgery under local and the recovery time is quicker and less danger than a general. You have to research which hospitals. Many surgeons are too old or lazy to change their practices compared to the newer and more innovative surgeons. Anaestesiologists also are not keen because they get higher fees for general than local.

Status: offline 		From a person who has had surgery while awake, I will never let them do that again to me. Most locals and nerve blocks are done with some from of Lidociane (Maracaine, bupivacaine, ropivacaine, sensorcaine, etc) but there are other drugs too. While these drugs are fairly effective on most people, some people are rather resistant to their affect. I happen to be one of those unlucky people.

Anesthesia is a pretty major shock to the body. I can see the advantages of using local only from a medical perspective. The recovery time is much faster and it would reduce medical costs. A person spends 1 to 3 hours in post op requiring skilled care. Eliminating that would be a cost reduction (that you will never see) for the hospital.

Doctor's and staff will need to be re-educated on how to talk and act while performing surgery now that the patient can hear and understand everything the doctor and nurses say. "please pass the saw nurse" might not go over well to the patient. I would assume though that a drug like Versed or some other drug to make the patient be more in a twilight sleep would really be needed to keep the patient calm.

Status: offline 		Alright, with the exception of an ablation procedure on my kidney, I have been awake during four knee surgeries, and an arterial bypass in my right leg.

The only problem I encountered was the doctor getting a bit pissed when I was asking for a play by play on what exactly he was doing.

The cardiovascular surgeon actually threatened to send the nurse out for a cast iron skillet to whop me upside my head.

And for some strange reason, they really dont like you taking photos while they worked, but seriously, have any of you actually seen your arteries? Man that was the neatest thing I have seen since watching my son born!

They didnt let me take it into the operating room!

Even when I pointed out they had 3 cameras in there already.

Status: offline 		I watched during surgery on my right hand and as best I could while they removed a bullet from my right side. The surgeon doing my hand had heavy metal playing during the procedure and was a little miffed when I asked he have it turned down.
