There was Dan Hicks, also. But Dan hicks didn't play in my neighborhood, so this band did. These lyrics; "My oldest kid got busted at school for smokin' pot, then yesterday my old lady went off with the arresting cops ... ", sung by a hillbilly band, as speaking to accepted reality of considerations at the time. This could only happen on stage in the seventies, before 'dumb it down' disco and batshit-crazy Regan effed it all up, but that's ancient history. Aside that the US has been batshit wacko ever since. We honestly had in going forward, at one time. The bass player for this band (Chicken Hotrod) and the bass player for the Charlotte symphony both taught string class at the local community college, the latter who conned me into playing a viola there, hence my learning of the C clef (he pushed me there because I was the only one in the class who could learn it to read it, he was trying to push me to cello next). Learning music theory in day hours and playing Bach in string class, then hearing Chicken Hotrod or Mother's Finest finest in different clubs at night, . . . Good times all around. All things must pass, but they don't have to pass for the worst. I don't care if my own life surpasses this recent creative impasse or not, I've already enjoyed and still enjoy my own taste far better than most in that regard, and I am grateful for it. And some decades of further exploration of Russian and French and German and Italian and Austrian et al. composers' works yet to go.
