Try to dry your eyes you two

'Cause you're not blind partisans or anything

I wil say a few final things.

1) I honestly don't know much about Gorsuch. His ruling against the truck driver is very concerning. Also concerning is the dark money behind his nomination. That being said:

A) I am glad he got an up or down vote.
B) I am THRILLED that McConnell used the "nuclear option". (Of course he did it for pure selfish, partisan reasons.) The thing is. I HATE the filibuster for ANYTHING. (Legislative or for nominees). It is NOT presribed in the Coonstitution, and only exists as a loophole in the cloture rules in the first place. In no way, shape or form, did our founders, design a Senate with anonymous filibuster on demand. It made me sick to hear McConnell talk about 60 vootes, as if it were written in the Constitution. Now Democrats talk about it all the time the same way.

2) I truly wish the right wing partisans on this thread would see the damage to our democracy caused by Mitch McConnell. He absolutely took a shit on our Constitution. If "Advice and Consent" can now mean "We will ig nore all nominees from the currrent President, and wait for the next one", where does this end? Supreme Court justices are appointed for life, and we now have Neil Gorsuch in place of a very qualified justice nominated by a President that Mitch McConnell didn't like. It is TRULY sad. (And you can be SURE that I would say the same thing if Gorsuch were nominated and confirmed under legitimate circumstances and Chuck Schumer did something similar. (And please sparre me the Obama and the Democrats did it ttoo, routiine)

In Smmary... Gorsuch is the symbol of partisan politics over country.. His nomination should be mourned.

You refuse to see that Chuck Schumer set the precedent followed by McConnell.

"They were just words, they didn't mean anything"

That attitude is pure blind partisan bullshit. If roles were reversed you would be enthusiastic about the Democrats placing their rabid partisan lawyer on the bench, knowing he or she was a Marxist there to create laws and rule as a team of dictators with iron fists

It is the rabid extremist Democrat party, that is taking us down this road and that the Republicans are merely standing up for themselves and for the rule of law, without which we shall descend into chaos and civil war

It would be funny if it weren't all so sad.

Here's the thing -- each convention the GOP adopts an official platform.

To be a RINO would technically mean you vote against that platform. Yet that's not what makes detractors call them RINOs.

Instead, it's the more extreme, uncompromising, hard right conservative faction which decided on its own that it was now the middle and the official platform, and anyone who disagreed was a RINO. It's insanely stupid on the face of it. But their base said "Yeah!"

Really, it's the RINO name-callers who are the RINOs, who are the people not in alignment with the GOP platform.

McCain has views, and he states them, and he votes with McConnell. He's as partisan as anyone in Washington.

Only the blind partisans would call him RINO, pretending that GOP policy revolves around their own personal views.

Yes, I see that the nuclear option is bad, but Harry Reid used it first.
That forced the Republicans to use it or accept a situation where they needed 60 vote for a justice and the Dems only needed 51.
The Dems must not have thought this judge was that bad, they offered to support him if the Reps promised never to use the nuclear option.

Musicmystery -> RE: ANOTHER MASSIVE WIN FOR TRUMP - Gorsuch Confirmed! (4/9/2017 10:09:42 AM)

Not exactly looking for an open and honest unbiased discussion, are you. I could play the same silly game with you, just shoot them down if you actually manage to find a few. But I'm not so happy with Democrats either. And, I don't agree across the board with the Greens or with Sanders either. I think blind partisanship is among the problems we face, and I think you exemplify it. I've already demonstrated I don't, and your response is to try to move the goal posts until you can claim I do.

But again, their are many reasonable conservatives. That doesn't mean I agree with them often, but I do respect and consider their viewpoints. George Will, for example, has published thoughtful columns, and I recently shared a thread with a thoughtful conservative analysis -- which the usual suspects here immediately dismissed because the Atlantic published it.

Conservatism isn't the problem. The alt-right no compromise xenophobic oppose anything from the left no matter what it is distortion of what used to be conservatism is the problem (well, part of the problem, more accurately).

bounty44 -> RE: ANOTHER MASSIVE WIN FOR TRUMP - Gorsuch Confirmed! (4/9/2017 10:18:31 AM)

from a few months ago but somewhat relevant to the topic at hand:

"No More Obama Judges"

quote:

With the Senate back from its election hiatus for a brief lame-duck session, there is one thing that Republicans must absolutely not do: confirm any of the remaining judicial nominations of President Barack Obama still pending in that chamber.

We know that Obama’s Supreme Court pick, Merrick Garland, won’t be confirmed. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made that a central theme of the presidential campaign — that Republicans would give voters the opportunity to decide who should be on the court when they picked the next president.

To the surprise of many, Republicans senators formed a solid block in supporting McConnell and maintained this stand throughout the election. The voters have now spoken, and President-elect Donald Trump will pick the next justice.

But at last count, there were another 58 judicial nominations pending in the Senate, according to the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. That includes seven nominations for the federal courts of appeal (four still before the Senate Judiciary Committee, and three on the floor of the Senate); 44 nominations for district court positions (including territorial courts), of which 22 are on the Senate floor; two for the U.S. Court of International Trade; and five for the Court of Federal Claims.

Mind you, Obama has already left his mark on the federal judiciary. Indeed, in his eight years in office, he has changed its character — and not in a good way. With a few notable exceptions, he has appointed some of the most liberal, ideological and radical judges to ever sit on the federal bench.

Obama has gotten 329 federal judges confirmed to lifetime appointments, representing almost 40 percent of the entire federal judiciary. When he took office, only one federal appellate court had more judges appointed by Democrat presidents than Republican presidents (two were tied). Today, Obama appointees have shifted control of the appeals courts to nine of the 13 circuits, increasing the likelihood, as The New York Times said back in 2014 that cases would “end up before more ideologically sympathetic judges.”

Obama’s judicial confirmations include two Supreme Court appointments, one of whom, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, has the most liberal voting record of any member of the court, according to a recent analysis by The New York Times — quite an accomplishment. Former Obama Solicitor General Elena Kagan almost tied with long-time Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg for second place.

Anyone who doubts the progressive ideology that drives Sotomayor should read her dissent in 2016 in Utah v. Strieff, which reads like a Black Lives Matters speech, including a reference to Ferguson, Mo. She claims that “people of color are disproportionate victims” of police misconduct, thereby supporting the false narrative of the Obama administration that our justice system is filled with inherent bias and discriminatory law-enforcement officers.

It is bad enough that we’ll have to live for decades with the many judges picked by Obama throughout the federal judiciary system. We certainly don’t need to add another five dozen.

Any Republican senators who have made deals with the White House on any of the pending nominees should realize that while they may have convinced the White House to nominate someone from their state who is not quite as bad as the other judges that have been confirmed, they are still only getting the best of a bad lot.

They should realize that the election of Trump and the clear choice by voters has cancelled all deals. Their oaths of office call for an absolute and unwavering duty to preserve the Constitution and the limited government it imposes, as well as the liberties and freedoms it guarantees. And that means not confirming any more judges who will damage the Constitution even more than it has already been during the Obama presidency.
