I agree that  people need to be matched well ...  But I do think its a matter of degree  and types of intelligence

I have been around many mensa level IQ's, who had trouble  holding conversations outside of their chosen fields, and had little or no ability  to interact well with others ....

I like balance in my  boys .... he can be more intelligent than I  on the IQ  scale ... but he needs to feel I am emotionally as  capable if not possably   more capable than him ... EQ  as much as IQ ...  breadth of interests and  comunications skills as much as depth

*warm smile* .... interesting, engageing, enjoyable  and charming ....  rather than just intelligent

I find that there are three things that the people I enjoy being around must have. A great sense of humour, a reasonable amount of intelligence, and a mind open to new things and ideas. Without those three things I will end up bored.

for me, respect works both ways. an Owner needs to respets His/Her submissive, especially if they have little or no experience in the lifestyle. like, if a submissive is pushed to far, to soon in a relationship, then the submissive may be scared off, or even be mentally or emotionally scarred. on the other hand, it goes woth out saying, the owner needs to be repsected totally, if the Owner does not meet the subs needs (or vice versa), its probablly best that the relationship does not go further, or both parties times will be wasted. so, from the submissives perspective, then,  while the Dominant should be respected, it is nice when the Dominant respects the submissive, as whats the point of a damaged submissive if they cannot serve their Dominant?

Greater or near equal intelligence is definately part of the whole that I would need in order to submit.  I need more than just a sharp mind in the sum package, but the wit is a requirement.

Intellect is the first thing I look at in considering a submissive. Well, actually MANNERS are the first thing, with intellect being a close second.

I'll try to put this delicately...There are some Dom/mes on CM, [based on message board posts & personal contact], that I consider dumber than Congress. Is there anyone here that could submit to someone they did not respect intellectually?  My answer BTW is no.

Nope,  but i would not call others stupid either.
This is a reply I can/do respect.
The question, if I'm not mistaken, is about having standards in terms of what we would prefer in a mate...  PeterK50 and all of us have some standards/expectations which many Dom/sub will not meet, and other Doms/subs have standards which we will not meet...  That is life, and all of us hope to have our standard for a "great/kool" partner met as we pursue happiness (whatever that is for each person).    M

Why would I submit to someone I could not respect intellectually?  How would I trust their dominance and decisions?  No way...

Well, I think that it's also important to keep in mind that the smarter the person in question is, the more likely they are to be a supervillain. At least if they're not the brightest lightbulb on the generic winter-time holiday tree, you can be fairly sure that they aren't scheming to sink any continents into the sea, or turn people into pipe-cleaners with a giant death ray.

That's really my major criteria for dommes: Smart, but not so smart that they could overthrow the world. I think it's worked out well, so far.

Of course we are all going to agree that we enjoy intellegence as we are intellegent people. If we were not intellegent we would not be wasting our time reading message boards, we would instead be drinking beer, walking the streets and going to loud noisy nightclubs where you dont have to have a conversation because no one can hear another person speak because the music is always too loud. Well ok, yeah maybe some of us do that too, got to have some stupid fun in life from time to time.

I don't think I could submit to someone dumb. My Dom is a retired English Professor and a writer. I'm still a little intimidated by his intellect, but also very turned on by it. I love being stimulated and challenged by new ideas. It helps that he thinks I'm bright and worth having.
