that all might be true greta, but that's all after the fact information, not known by the passengers during the request to vacate their seats---the man was still asked to leave, twice, by people with authority to do so.

Yes but as a full price paying customer, I wouldn't leave either.

United fuck up by over booking. They should pay for another flight to get their staff to destination maybe with another airline or whatever.

And this over booking crap is nonsense!

With technology so tight today, there is no way this still should be happening.l

Even with today's technology, there's no way to account for human behaviour.
You can't forecast when someone isn't going to turn up.
You can't forecast if someone is running late beyond boarding cut-off times.
You can't forecast if someone is going to ring up and cancel in the last 2 minutes of gate closing time.

The over-booking algorithm is designed to help take up the slack for all those people who fail to show up when they need to.
Most of the time, it works very effectively.
But there are times when more than the calculated average number do actually turn up at the same time when a huge bulk of the over-sold tickets are also wanting to get on board.
I'm guessing this is one of those times when it didn't work so well.

Unfortunately, having paid for a ticket doesn't guarantee you'll get on your designated flight.
What made it worse is that UA handled the situation very badly indeed.

I don't know the reason behind him in particular being asked to vacate his seat. youd have to ask the airlines that. everyone paid for their seats, there is nothing special in that regard. but its pretty much besides the point---he was asked multiple times by people with the authority to do so.

He purchased something with money he had EARNED at his job.
He had possession of that thing.
Someone who wanted it offered to buy it and he refused.
This someone was then ENTITLED to have it for free and take it from him by force.

Great LIBERAL thinking there bounty.

Aren't those on the Right always bleating about how those who are entitled to take their hard earned money and goods by force?

Unfortunately for United, the Contract of carriage allows the airline to deny BOARDING.
He had already boarded.

To say that airlines have the authority to do so may be valid, but is it right?

Known or unknown, the reason was shit and, as a paying customer who had done nothing wrong, I wouldn't vacate my seat either.

Notice please: he was neither fighting nor resisting the jack-booted Marshals/TSA agents that were dragging him off the flight. By all known criteria, this guy was on the side of the angels.

Then, United decided to do some damage control by bringing up this guy's past. That was mistake number four (by my count).

This was not a matter of over-booking, as initially reported, but let's look at that for a moment? How many industries are allowed to sell product they don't have? The ties between the airline industry and the federal government are troubling, at best.

Okay. So, not over-booking, but the airline was in a desperate situation. I get that, but what about that makes it the paying passenger's problem? Poor planning on the part of United makes passengers liable to have their lives disrupted? I don't see how that adds up.

It's kind of like a guy, bringing me his guitar to get some work done and I quote him a price before I check the latest prices from my supplier. I get hold of my supplier and the price has tripled for the bridge I need. Do I charge my customer more than promised? Do I keep his guitar and tell him I'll send him a new one, at some later point?

United fucked up, at least FOUR times, here. I hope this guy bleeds 'em for eight figures ... minimum.

FR -

Conan O'Brian last night (paraphrased):

Due to alleged sexual harassment charges, advertisers are leaving Bill O'Reilly's show in droves.
However, United Airlines has vowed to continue its normal advertising on the show, with United's chairman stating the company's position as, "You'll have to drag us off that show."

New advertising slogan:

"United Airlines: We put the hospital in hospitality."

A friend on facebook sent me a meme with the "SouthWestern" logo and underneath it says:

It appears that threatening passengers who are already seated is company policy.

i don't disagree and yes the airline seems to have handled it poorly.

one way around the mess might have been for the airline to ask for volunteers and give out vouchers. i ended up with a free fare to Europe that way once.

I also read the destination those 4 staff need to get to is only 4 hours away by Bus!

And on top of that, they don't need to be there until the following day.

United could have got them a private car and driver to get them there! Rather than beat up a passenger to make him leave.
